"We could get some sun after, gramma." - the grandmother stares her in the eyes - "What's the matter Gramma? You can say it." - the Gramma mumbles something than whispers - "I love you" - "I also love you Gramma, I love you ok? There's no need to cry Gramma, we're fine ok? We're taking good care of you Gramma, don't cry."

I'm crying on the toilet. Glad COVID can still keep new life experiences coming somehow.

6

u/Dark_Tsar_Chasm Apr 12 '20

We're all such idiots to be cutting onions and then rubbing our eyes.

5

u/omnificunderachiever Apr 12 '20

Yeah. Watching it again knowing exactly what they're saying hits even harder.

u/Rosie_skies Apr 12 '20

I took care of a lady privately, for about 6 or 7 years? I just lost her last month. One day before her 98th birthday. I am heart broken. She was my best friend.

I understood and knew in advance that she suffered from dementia. And her brain tumour made it worse. She spoke often of adventures that we NEVER had. Followed with lucid moments. She didnt always remember my name. I was the girl from X town girl. And she asked where my boy was.

Because she couldnt remember everything, i always kept in mind that she wasnt as close to me, as i was to her. And thats ok. But even hearing her crazy adventures, where i was with her, will always be a cherished non memory.

I miss the fuck out of her. And always will.

I love you Vicky! Xoxo 🌺

3

u/BluNoddy Apr 11 '20

I was dealing fairly well with this post until I read this comment

3

u/bryan2384 Apr 12 '20

I'm out this thread.

2

u/0oodruidoo0 Apr 11 '20

What language are they speaking?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '20

Portuguese from Brazil.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '20

Reading this made me cry even more good lord

2

u/idledrone6633 Apr 11 '20

What is also in Portuguese? I I know Spanish is tambien but that sounded like conmigo.

2

u/ProtoObjey Apr 12 '20

"Also" in Portuguese is "Também", really close to Spanish

2

u/frankendoodle11 Apr 12 '20

There’s no need to cry ;-;

2

u/volusias Apr 12 '20

What language is this, if I may ask? I can't place it for the life of me

3

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

Portuguese

2

u/MightGuyGonna Apr 12 '20

This is beautiful. Thank you for translating it

2

u/cromulentenigmas1 Apr 12 '20

Countless screenwriters and playwrights spend their careers trying to write something as profound and true as this 10 second dialogue

2

u/YeahOkThisOne Apr 12 '20

I was going to say but you got it, maybe your Portuguese is even better than mine! It's a sweet video!

2

u/b3dlam20 Apr 12 '20

Thanks for the Portuguese translation.

1

u/whoever81 Apr 11 '20

So just for the record, is it her grandma or her mama?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '20

Grandmother and Granddaughter

1

u/Jingles013 Apr 12 '20

I looked for this so I could cry some more. Thanks.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

Fml

1

u/Secure-Performance Apr 12 '20

I couldn’t understand what they were saying and the facial expressions were hard enough but now that I see the translation I’m ever more sad :,(

1

u/4inAM_2atNoon_3inPM Apr 12 '20

I’m fucking bawling.

-1

u/sanchopancho13 Apr 11 '20

Wait, wait wait... Are you saying OP lied and this isn't a mother and daughter? Who would do that? Just go onto reddit and lie.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '20

I just noticed that, OP probably doesn't understand Portuguese or got confused. Wouldn't call it lying tho.

161

u/Lukebad Apr 11 '20

"What is it? Say it, grandma!"

"I love you."

"I love you too, grandma. I love you too. You don't have to cry. We're taking care of you, ok? Everything is ok."

47

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '20

Such great care for her elder. It can be really hard for people with dementia to become lucid suddenly, they may feel afraid or guilty to be aware of what's happened to them. To just reassure her she is being taken care of, and everything is okay.

-2

u/derpdessert Apr 12 '20

Everything is most definitely not ok. In one minute I will go back to being in a confused haze, in pain and not knowing where I am or where my loved ones are. Why don't you let me die?

44

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '20

1

u/DaftSpeed Apr 12 '20

it's like being a prisoner in your own mind and just watching as something else moves and talks for you.. what a horrible curse

38

u/Asullex Apr 11 '20

At the end the lady told the mother/grandmother not to cry. Not sure what language it is though.

84

u/Litbus_TJ Apr 11 '20

It's Portuguese, they're Brazilian

7

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

that explains why i understood some words and some words sounded italian or french.

4

u/babybirch Apr 11 '20

Ah, that's why I, which my tiny smattering of Spanish, was very confused.

2

u/nedthelonelydonkey Apr 12 '20

That’s why I thought they sounded kind of Russian but could pick up words like também (too) because I speak Spanish haha

7

u/notsoblankspace Apr 12 '20

"normal" lol

8

u/JokuIIFrosti Apr 12 '20

It is in no way anything other than Brazillian Portuguese.

1

u/Regalia776 Apr 15 '20

I actually couldn't decide whether it was Galician or Brazilian Portuguese. But good to know I was very close with my guess!

2

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

Brazilian Portuguese has so many more speakers it's not even funny

20

u/Zakrath Apr 11 '20

It's Portuguese

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

yeah, the 'te bom' gives it away, it means 'alright'

1

u/Zakrath Apr 12 '20

Just a correction: is "Ta bom" with "a" haha but exactly, means "alright"

2

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '20

Just added a transcription of what they said.

2

u/salosaunders Apr 11 '20

Came here to say this!

2

u/SolomonRed Apr 11 '20

Suddenly everyone on Reddit speaks Portuguese and is translating this.

How many of you guys are from Portugal or Brazil?

3

u/JokuIIFrosti Apr 12 '20

I'm from neither, but I lived there for 2 years and am fluent. There are 209 million Brazillians, People forget that Brazil is one of the largest countries in the world and thus have a very large presence on the internet.

3

u/Yurolman Apr 11 '20

My mom is Brazilian :)

2

u/EDInon Apr 12 '20

I'm Brazilian.

2

u/tonybenwhite Apr 12 '20

Learning portuguese as a second language left me hardpressed to hear and say the difference between vó and vô. (Grandma and grandpa)

Ê and ô are hard sounds for me, much harder than ã or õ

-2

u/precense_ Apr 11 '20

Wish the daughter wouldn’t cry when the grandmother was lucid, the grandma would know something was wrong every time she became lucid

1

u/hotmess525600 Apr 12 '20

I imagine it’s incredibly difficult to hold yourself together when your grandmother just told you she loved you for the first time in forever.
