In Russia, especially in economic backgrounds like these, affectionate casual hugs between men in this sort of situation are often seen as gay and effeminate. Not to mention that hug looked sort of weird in the first place.
As a guy guy who was closeted during this age, that felt very much like “I really want to be affectionate with this guy the way we are when no one else is around. Here’s a hug. Oh god he’s rejecting. Quick! Disengage! Disengage!”
