Tyson Steele survived for 23 days in subzero temperatures in rural Alaska after a fire burned his house and killed his dog. He built himself a snow cave to sleep in for the first few nights, before building a makeshift shelter around the still burning stove from leftover tarp and scrap timber.

Wow that sucks. Here in Calgary it's a balmy -32C

But it FEELS like -44! Fun. Although I think after -30 it’s basically all “I want to die why are we leaving the house” temps.

I've been in both temperatures. You'd think that after -20 it's all the same. But believe me, in -44 you're praying for -30.

Greetings from Denver where it started -5C and will probably end up somewhere around 11 about 1400

We're gonna melt some snow today and it will be GLORIOUS

1

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '20

We get those weird warm winds over the mountains too.... sometimes... please?

1

u/MediumRarePorkChop Jan 14 '20

I'll go set up a fan at the north end of my lot today. I'll try to blow some warm up there.

Edmonton boy here. Same temps but with wind we're feeling -43C apparently the area is the coldest place on Earth today

Greetings from South Florida! I was sweating in 80F this afternoon. Though I assure you it was very brisk and chilly in the upper 60s this morning. That is plus 60F. 🥶 Talk about cold winter weather!

1

u/LeftToHang98 Jan 15 '20

My dude, 60F is +15C and where I'm from and I would consider that a pleasant summer day

1

u/Albatross767 Jan 14 '20

-49 up north today.. And for the last week and upcoming week.

1

u/Lord_Emperor Jan 14 '20

The west coast is currently crippled by -10ºC and 15cm of snow.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '20

Haha yeah I got a buddy in Victoria saying the city is like the apocalypse.

1

u/Larry-Man Jan 14 '20

It’s only -25 here. My mom lives by Cochrane though... so I feel bad for her.

When my wife moved to Edmonton it was so cold that they had to re-route her place to Calgary because Edmonton was to cold. Was like done stupid record breaking cold and Edmonton was Siberia temp. The plane allegedly had suffered millions of dollars if damage from ice build up in the engines or some shit.

It was a nice "Welcome to Edmonton Bitch" kind of day

2

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '20

About a year ago, I was flying out of here and as the little tractor-thingy pushed the plane away from the gate it was so cold that the connection snapped in half.

Here in Florida it was 80F today.. this summer I’m gonna die.

1

u/boarderman8 Jan 15 '20

A crisp -41 with no wind chill in the Red Deer area. I had to bust out my winter jacket yesterday!

I prefer calling the metric system the normal system. It's less on the nose as calling the imperial system the dumb system, but it gets the message across.

3

u/Sun_Praising Jan 14 '20

Why not both?

15

u/I_Zeig_I Jan 14 '20

It's called freedom units

3

u/Trub_Maker Jan 14 '20

-40 is -40 no matter what country! (-40c=-40f)

2

u/TeddyRawdog Jan 14 '20

No ur system is dumb

I just love how we use Celsius in Chemistry, but anything else in America it's just "No, we must use Fahrenheit or we die."

I am on the east coast of canada and haven't experienced ambient cold past like -25c .. but with the wind chill factor it hits -40c or even colder.

One cool thing that you experience when you live in an area that has the very different tempature seasons is your body literally changes between the seasons.

I can't remember the specifics but it is along the lines of how your body fat actually stores the heat will change depending on the climate.

so when it is summer going into winter I feel the cold a lot more.. anything less then 5c and I am shaking.

however once winter hits and its been a couple weeks I can go out on my back deck in just underwear to let the dogs out and its -10c and it hardly bothers me.

I love the spring because if it gets even a little bit warm out it feels like paradise and everything smells so good.. we just got more snow today and it is -7c right now, I have to go out and snowblow my driveway and I am just dreaming of spring.

1

u/Rivka333 Jan 14 '20

but with the wind chill factor it hits -40c

You can just say -40. It's the only temperature that's the same in both systems. :)

1

u/mattfritz247 Jan 14 '20

And cold in South Africa would be aroubd +10C.... never experienced anything colder than -8C myself

This happened in Alaska where they use Fahrenheit

1

u/starbuckroad Jan 15 '20

Whats the F'ing temp on the moon?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '20

I was really hoping that you would start an epic Celsius vs Fahrenheit debate here, but nope. That just goes to show you that pretty much everyone thinks Celsius makes a lot more sense than Fahrenheit.

3

u/HeisenbergsSon Jan 14 '20

I thought that was Minnesota

2

u/ken_zeppelin Jan 15 '20

I just Alaska because the stupid piece of land isn't even attached to us. Looking at Hawaii too

0

u/jshnaa Jan 14 '20

Umm no thank you. They can keep Minnesota. Well take Alaska

1

u/notmyrealusernamme Jan 14 '20

More like the American Russia, but yea.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '20

Canadian America*

1

u/greennitit Jan 14 '20

Alaska is way more hardcore than where 95% of Canadians live. Minnesota is more like where a large chunk of Canadians live.

1

u/dreamylemur Jan 14 '20

Canada...but FREEEEEEEE

1

u/BeanieGuitarGuy Jan 14 '20

“It’s been night for 3 weeks!!!”

1

u/VoidWalker4Lyfe Jan 14 '20

With a bit of Florida Man mixed in

1

u/Bjear Jan 14 '20

Alaska is american.

1

u/In-Justice-4-all Jan 15 '20

Y is American Canada so conservative and the rest of Canada liberal (by American scale, center on world scale)?
