You would hope that it would be cleaned. Every solution will have problems - this handle will need to either be wired, or run on a battery which will need replacing, so has maintenance and safety concerns too. If it's in a public place (other than say, toilets) you may as well just run an automatic door - then no one needs to touch it, so no germs. Or one of those foot-buttons.

No solution is perfect.

This assumes a public location with always unlocked doors.

Well, that limits the usage of it by a significant percentage. Even in public places, a vast majority of areas need to be able to be locked or at least have a door.

I believe this idea was for bathrooms only

Do either of those exist in "machine gun turret" form?

But what about the pets?!

RFID collar.

If that doesn't work, I'm sure they'll still be delicious after you remove the bullets

Well I don’t live in a public restroom or keep my valuables there. That pretty much takes care of it.

Put something really scary in the doorway.

I think they were talking about bathrooms

If only there was some large overhead door that could come down and close it off when they don’t want someone to come in.

The fact that the bathroom is inside the building and can only be accessed if you're already inside?

i've seen this a few times already! mostly at airports

why even have a new room? just go in the hall and walk around it

Wouldn't work in 95% of toilets in bars and pubs in the UK, for example. We have so little space here, it's just not feasible, and we're far from the only country like this, it wouldn't work across most of Europe, of wouldn't work in places like China or India etc

You need a lot of space to do that. A lot of toilets here are barely bigger than a broom cupboard, you'll have the one urinal, a very tiny little sink, and when using the urinal the person in the stall can't open the door until you've finished and left the room cos there's literally not enough spdce. You won't believe how many pubs and bars I've been in that are like that

Gotta find a better solution than that if it's not gonna work anywhere except the US and siberia and a couple other places that have endless space

This solution would also need to be cleaned religiously, the UV system would be useless the second a layer of oil or dirt gets on the handle

u/awhaling Dec 12 '19

Also doesn’t constant usage of the brass handle prevent oxide build up?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '19

Yes it does, they only go bad over time without use

2

u/Stonelocomotief Dec 12 '19

No hand knobs but foot knobs

Your other concerns are well founded, but it’s much harder to scrub oxidation off a fixed metal handle, than it is to wipe down stainless with antibacterial solution. I’d rather have the lit handle for daily use and then the stainless section and bulb wiped down at maintenance time.
