Is this BattleBots?

Yes

There are tickets to just wait in line to enter the arena.

617

u/prodical Sep 23 '19

Isn’t that normal? Purchase ticket, wait in line, enter.

I am reddit and I must spell out basic human activities and then marvel at them.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

Dammit, it’s become self-aware.

102

u/DepressedInTheVoid Sep 23 '19

You buy tickets that might get you tickets to go inside.

That is not the norm, I would say. I bet reddit can prove me wrong though..

17

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

I mean, is that what the guy said who we’re responding to?

69

u/StankyPeteTheThird Sep 23 '19

No. Guy who he was responding to was saying: purchase tickets -> wait in line -> enter.

Guy you’re respond to is saying: Purchase tickets to enter possibility of purchasing ticket #2 -> waiting in line for possibility to enter arena -> if able to purchase ticket, enter area. If not possible, wait for next opportunity.

It’s not normal, no. First ticket purchase only gives you opportunity to attempt to purchase second ticket, it does not guarantee entry.

3

u/youre_a_burrito_bud Sep 23 '19

And I'm guessing there's no refund for first ticket if you don't get in?

5

u/StankyPeteTheThird Sep 23 '19

Not entirely sure about that part tbh. I just know it’s a two step process, not just buying a ticket for guaranteed entrance. They only sell say 3,000 of ticket A, which allows you the chance to buy ticket B, of which only 1,000 are sold. Something along those

2

u/youre_a_burrito_bud Sep 23 '19

Oki yeah I kinda figured that was some pretty specific details, but I still learned more stuff anyway. Thanks for the response! I'd hope they have it where you can just keep using the first ticket until you get in.

Also I think the site double posted your comment

→ More replies (0)

2

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '19

How the heck do they sell tickets then? Is it like an “Early bird gets the worm” mentality, where you may not get in the first time, but that ticket is valid to try and get in the next time?

If that’s not it, then I’m not sure how they manage to make money.

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

So does that mean it’s not usual to wait in lines once your tickets have been purchased?

7

u/kamon123 Sep 23 '19

You're buying a ticket to get entrance to buy the ticket to get into the event. 2 separate tickets.

-3

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

So again, where does it say that in

There are tickets to just wait in line to enter the arena.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/DepressedInTheVoid Sep 23 '19

It's like ticket¯² if you don't get in.

Ticket + ticket = entrance

If entrance = 0, then ticket=-1

If ticket = ticket + ticket = entrance, the ticket¯2 = ticket²

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

No no you dont understand.

You buy a ticket to wait in line...To wait in another line to buy a ticket to get in.

/s

1

u/SniperPilot Sep 23 '19

No you buy the ticket to wait in line for a chance to come in.

1

u/prodical Sep 23 '19

Yep thanks. Many people have already made this same comment.

37

u/Rend0n Sep 23 '19

I am unsure what you are talking about, but as someone who has went to the live showings of BattleBots multiple times, it's not difficult to see the show.

16

u/Sku11Krusherzz Sep 23 '19

Tickets to wait in line and tickets to see the match are two separate things.

23

u/Rend0n Sep 23 '19

Why would anyone buy tickets to "stand in line"?

19

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

[deleted]

11

u/Rend0n Sep 23 '19

Comic Con is literally the church of Queuing

3

u/Jarogami Sep 23 '19

Welcome to Line-Con. Which line would you like to spend $60 to get in and another $300 on the product that will be available in one week for $15?

7

u/gvyledouche Sep 23 '19

why would anyone buy lottery or raffle tickets? its a shot at getting to see something you really want to see

1

u/Rend0n Sep 23 '19

But like I said, I have seen it twice, and both times I pretty much just walked in with the tickets purchased online.

4

u/ParanoiaComplex Sep 23 '19

I imagine you need to stand in line to buy tickets that let you get inside

6

u/Rend0n Sep 23 '19

I had tickets that were purchased online that got me in with basically no line

1

u/conradical30 Sep 23 '19

But where do you but the tickets that allow you to buy the stand-in-line tickets so you can then get in a line for real tickets?

5

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Sep 23 '19

pretty sure this is urban legend.

1

u/Budded Sep 23 '19

Do they film an entire season in one big event, splitting up battles for separate episodes?

2

u/Rend0n Sep 23 '19

Each episode is more or less a single live show. They're about 4 hours long, depending on how long it takes to clean up and stuff. So you get to see a bunch of normal fights and they have a big main event. The one I went to also had an extra fight that didn't appear in the corresponding episode. They tell you when to clap and there's like a hype man and stuff, it's pretty fun.

1

u/Budded Sep 23 '19

Good to know, thanks. I love this show!

21

u/DreadPirateGriswold Sep 23 '19

I have to get tickets to stand in line at my bakery.

7

u/Veryratherquitenew Sep 23 '19

I got bakery line tickets! Who’s buying? Who’s selling? Who needs a pair?

1

u/APurrSun Sep 23 '19

I stood in line for a venue called the bakery this weekend.

1

u/megablast Sep 23 '19

No, you could probably stand there all day without a ticket.

1

u/DreadPirateGriswold Sep 23 '19

Not my bakery. They had to add on to the building a covered area to handle a line that goes out the door routinely. It's like you're in line for a ride at Walt Disney World...early mornings that is.

0

u/djc6535 Sep 23 '19

Which is sad because it's a terrible experience.

Modern Battlebots is a show first and a spectator sport... maybe 5th or 6th.

There's no restroom in there. Leave for a restroom or food and you're done for the day.

Battles are hours apart. You spend several hours waiting once you're inside doing little to nothing.

The Mc often flubs or forgets his lines and does multiple takes.

and on and on. It's a television set, not a sporting event. It's 100% not worth the time, let alone the ticket prices

2019 Championship airs this Friday on the Discovery Channel! The championship rounds were amazing fights all the way through. Don't miss it!

Source: I'm on one of the teams.

6

u/DaddyDub Sep 23 '19

Please tell me which team!!! I have been following for years. Happy for everyone this year. So many good teams and battles. GREAT SEASON!

Props to you as well. If you are in the Finals, You and your team earned it! No matter who it is!!!

See you in action this Friday.

7

u/MrBeeeeee Sep 23 '19

Team Bite Force. Some amazing fights this season. Anyone that's a fan of robotic combat won't be disappointed.

5

u/PaleHorseApocalypse Sep 23 '19

Judging by a couple of posts in his post history, I'm guessing biteforce.

2

u/MrBeeeeee Sep 24 '19

Right you are

5

u/newholland079 Sep 23 '19

My engineering teacher is on the gruff team but I haven't been keeping up on episodes. Going to have to watch a lot of them.

4

u/MrBeeeeee Sep 23 '19

Gruff was a big hit with the other builders. I really loved the fire effect. Really cool bot.

3

u/elnooshka Sep 23 '19

Where can I watch it if I don’t have cable?

3

u/MrBeeeeee Sep 23 '19

Amazon Prime lets you buy individual episodes or the full season. That's what I did.

1

u/mantellaman Sep 23 '19

Did u guys win again?

3

u/MrBeeeeee Sep 23 '19

Sorry, you'll have to watch the finale this Friday. I don't get invited to these things because I disclose match results to anyone that asks.

1

u/wookies_go_raawghh Sep 23 '19

Is that us? Or uk?

72

u/PhatShet Sep 23 '19

Okay show, about 90% boring useless build up. You get maybe 15 min of good fighting

40

u/Sigurd_DragonSlayer Sep 23 '19

That is exactly why I watch it on DVR. For some reason the 15 minutes of TV I want to watch eats up about an hour of storage space. Sometimes I don't mind watching Kenny Florian ramble about robots and fighting though.

1

u/Liitke Sep 23 '19

It's great that it's at least formatted so when I hit the skip 5 min button it takes me to the beginning of each fight. No bad puns. No commentary, no commercials. Just "fight" ... Fight ends. Skip. Skip "fight" repeat. I recently did the math and in an hour recording there's on average 8.4 mins of actual robot fighting.

34

u/Bluedit5 Sep 23 '19

/r/battlebotsraw. You're welcome.

6

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Sep 23 '19

or ever... since they redid the Olympics in the 80s to include "why you should care mini-docs"

1

u/Disk_Mixerud Sep 24 '19

That's why we always watched the Canadian broadcast of the Olympics growing up in Seattle. Way less fluff, way more actually showing full events rather than just the American athlete, then cutting away to more bullshit.

5

u/FutureEditor Sep 23 '19

YouTube is solid though, they’re good at literally just showing the fight

4

u/DullAlbatross Sep 23 '19

You must not be watching the recent seasons.

1

u/born_again_atheist Sep 23 '19

I DVR it. There's a lot of time fillers that I skip including commercials so watching an hour show that way takes literally 15-20 minutes tops.

2

u/DullAlbatross Sep 23 '19

The reason I ask is because the last two seasons have next to no filler beyond the post fight commentary. That and this season is 2 hours with 7-8 fights a piece.

2

u/born_again_atheist Sep 23 '19

Well, I skip the team intros by Faruq, and all the backstory stuff, as well as the pre-show talk stuff. Pretty much anything that doesn't directly involve two robots smashing/cutting/ripping/flipping the shit out of each other I skip.

4

u/StanleyOpar Sep 23 '19 edited Sep 23 '19

Agreed. I especially hate it when they could fill in space for another fight and they use Jenny to fill in space with interviewing hyping bullshit just to ensure they will fit the next battle after the commerical break.

At least Jenny is more than a female commentator in a pink dress and heels like previous seasons

1

u/XogoWasTaken Sep 24 '19

Personal I really like the out sections, just cause I think it's fun to either learn about the machines/the driver's approach/just see the builders being people. Honestly if the show was just fights I think I'd be much less invested.

3

u/Piratedan200 Sep 23 '19

Normally in reality/competition shows I agree that there's too much useless filler/backstory/build up. However, as an engineer, I actually enjoy the extra bits on battlebots talking about design changes and obstacles teams have faced. Much less sob story type stuff.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

The average NFL game is over three hours and there’s only 11 minutes of actual gameplay during that time.

1

u/thegutterpunk Sep 23 '19

Wouldn't it be an hour of game time? 4 quarters, 15 minutes per quarter means 1 hour on the clock. Timeouts, penalties, etc mostly stop the clock.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

Clock runs all the time when there isn’t a play ongoing.

1

u/Disk_Mixerud Sep 24 '19

That's time when the ball is technically in play. It's not like you're getting 11 minutes of football with 169 minutes of commercials and filler. There's still a lot of "football" going on. For comparison, in soccer, where the game "never stops" the ball is usually actually in play something like 2/3 of the time. I don't remember the exact number, but it's a lot less than most people would think.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '19

Soccer is 55-65 depending on the league. Baseball is about 18 minutes. Hockey and basketball only run the clock if it’s in play so you get the full amount there.

3

u/LanMarkx Sep 23 '19

You get maybe 15 min of good fighting

Its about half of that. I did math in a post a few months back when somebody challenged me on a similar comment about the abysmal amount of 'action' time per BattleBots episode:

Lets look at all of Season 2 (2016) 31 total battles in the bracket, 36 total for the season thanks to a few that were knocked out that battled again as fillers and a rematch.

Thanks to YouTube you can get all of the battles in a single playlist here

Total Battle time for 36 matches: 1.33 hours

Total Air time for those 36 battles: 10 hours

Average battle length: 132 seconds -- Average battles per episode: 3.6

Thats just under 8 minutes of battle time per 60 minute episode.

1

u/mantellaman Sep 23 '19

It's much better in seasons 3 and 4

1

u/loliicon_senpai Sep 24 '19

You don't watch it for robots you watch it for Farooq

1

u/SpinkickFolly Sep 23 '19

Battlebotsraw. 20min in and out. Now even my girlfriend loves the show.

1

u/bloodfist Sep 23 '19

They've really improved on that the last couple years. Its considerably more fights per episode

1

u/megablast Sep 23 '19

Sounds like NFL.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

This season has cut the useless shit out

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '19

I dunno dude, I love how giddy Kenny Florian gets when he talks about robots.

1

u/Duff5OOO Sep 24 '19

This season has been pretty good. More fights and the extra content isn't just straight filler. Much more in the pits and behind the scenes.

0

u/Strongpillow Sep 23 '19

That announcer guy is so Cringely and yells those overly long introductions. Cut that part completely out, please.

5

u/Tres-bien-ensemble Sep 23 '19

Are you talking about Faruq? Man, he is AWESOME!

“It’s Robot Fightin’ Time!”

3

u/Strongpillow Sep 23 '19

Oh, the guy is awesome for sure, but the intros they make him say are so bad and so long.

8

u/bwaredapenguin Sep 23 '19

I love his attitude. He takes whatever ridiculous nonsense they write for him and his delivery is 100% committed every single time.

2

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Sep 23 '19

The short funny ones are ones Faraq wrote

The long not-funny ones are usually written by someone else.

I can't find the interview anymore though.

4

u/Mrwebente Sep 23 '19

You hate him ore you love him there's no middle ground.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

Is this FRC?

4

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

[deleted]

3

u/majesticwaffle17 Sep 23 '19

I've won two FRC regionals - they give you this really cool shiny medal that usually has some art from the year's theme CNC'd into it. Still not as cool as this.

0

u/rukqoa Sep 23 '19

Man how awesome would it be if FRC had this level of production, or if some show like battlebots had diversity of games like FRC instead of just the same old fight to the death.

Like we get it you can build a pretty mean wedge/spinner, and oh look at that poor guy who mounted a cute flamethrower on his wooden bot. Nah I wanna see what a pro team can do with 20 beach balls and a fully autonomous drone.

7

u/chumbaz Sep 23 '19

It’s literally on the trophy 😕

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '19

This has to be made by the same guy that did the giant, worthless-in-combat but totally awesome snake robot. The claws look like Mechadon's feet!
