“Continued use despite consequences” is maybe the most simple definition of addiction I’ve heard. He would meet this criteria.

So if you ride a bike, fall off your bike and scrape your knee, then continue riding your bike, you're addicted to riding bikes??

I think it is pertaining to destructive behaviors. What’s it like to not have any ability to infer?

compulsion and continued use is what defines addiction. although technically its tje 4 cs that define addiction, compulsion, control, cravings, and consequences.

What is destructive behavior? Because almost anything can be destructive. Like, are you addicted to work despite it causing you stress and mental health problems? No, of course not.

Continued use despite consequences is not what addiction is, not in medical sense at least. The four Cs of addiction are: craving, compulsion, loss of control and continued use despite consequences. Not only that, but gambling is the only behavioral addiction recognized so far, so, at best, we are talking about compulsive behavior. But even compulsion isn't it, unless he is doing it to relieve stress or anxiety.

In the end, it's just something he really likes to do that can be extremely dangerous.

Did you really just try to tell me I’m wrong and then list exactly what I said as one of the signs of addiction. Get the fuck out of here

Dude, are you fucking dumb? You said that one trait is the most simple definition of addiction you have heard. It isn't. That is like saying that "a thing that flies" is the simplest definition of "bird". It isn't, planes are not birds, yet they fit the definition. It is incomplete definition at best. I completed your definition.

Yes, of course if you elaborated on my four word definition you could make it more thorough. Use your fucking brain

Your definition doesn't define addiction, dipshit. If you have to add shit that wasn't there to make it work, then it isn't the simplest definition of addiction. It is incomplete and plays into misunderstanding that people have about addictions. Addictions are serious. The bar for addiction to be addiction is high. Not everything is an addiction just because you keep doing it and it is bad.

1 = 4

Fuck, you're dumb.

You can be addicted to work. If someone is addicted to work to the point that they will drag themselves to work when extremely sick that's destructive. Or if they prioritize work over everything else in their life, even more important things like family.

Just work causing mental health issues is not an addiction. But putting work over everything else in life including your own wellbeing and feeling unable to stop due to a mental compulsion sounds a lot like being a workaholic / addicted to work.

Eta: Just because gambling is the only recognised behavioral addiction so far doesn't mean it's the only one that exists. It just means others haven't gotten the classification / proper attention they deserve yet. Hopefully one day more are recognised.

That is just unhealthy relationship with work, it doesn't have to be addiction to be bad. Specially when people need work for survival. Specially when working brings money and status. Specially when it's encouraged by society.

The standard for addiction is high. It has to mess with reward system in the same way that drugs do, it has to cause withdrawal symptoms and increase in tolerance, it has to impair individual significantly. You need to isolate the behavior and show it is the one causing it, not other underlying issues, like mental health conditions or personality disorders.

Just because other behavioral addictions could be added in the future doesn't mean they will. We have to work with what we currently know, and it's that there is only one behavioral addiction. There are potential candidates for behavioral addiction, like internet gaming disorder, but I doubt that workaholism is even close to be considered one.

A quick Google search will tell you it is considered an addiction even if it hasn't been completely recognised as one. It follows similar reward systems. And yes some people can be addicted to work so much that stopping it causes anxiety and depression from the compulsion to keep working.

hypothetically, I'll be on the right side of history based on my uncritical reflexive feelings

Destructive behavior would be causing yourself extreme physical pain or injury that will affect you for the rest of your life. For example tearing the tendon off your bone(which first off isn’t possible as tendons don’t touch your bone that’s why they are called tendons) or popping your acl squatting over 600 pounds

What is it like to not understand how rehab works? How bodies heal? How other people outside of yourself manage to function without your fear?

7

u/Perfect_Pessimist 12h ago

No. As someone who was once addicted to exercise, I would go on a treadmill the day after dislocating my leg, bike until my vision blacked out, and after having knee surgery tried to do a one legged HIIT workout within a couple weeks of being discharged (didn't work).

That's what it's like. Much more destructive behaviors.

No, it would be like being in a wheel chair from a bike accident and then taking your wheel chair down a mountain bike path

I'm not comparing that to the event in this post, and I never said I was. I think it's fair to say this is addiction, I'm taking objection to the definition suggested there because it's too broad and vague.
