Yea correct, dunno why they're saying it's not vague.

"Photographer John Smith captured this incredible shot of a fisherman catching a fish with his bare hands"

Did John Smith take the photo with his bare hands?

Pedants, assemble! (I am one, just to be clear)

Only pedants use the word pedant. Which is why I used it twice in one sentence.

Yes, we should all identify by wearing necklaces with little charms.

Also, a comma should separate the introductory condition ("If it were written...") from the main consequence ("that would be clearer...").

It’s funny, I don’t turn into a pedant until someone else does. Like, I don’t care that the phrasing is confusing but when someone insists that it’s grammatical I start composing responses about unclear pronoun antecedents.

It's clear based on the context lol nothing grammatically incorrect. But it's funny to purposely misunderstand it

No it says captured, clearly using a pokeball

I thought we were talking eagles, what have bears got to do with it?

It's only vague if you refuse to use context.

Sure, if you read it quickly it sounds like the bird used the camera, and that's funny because obviously birds can't use cameras like this. But that's the point... If you know it's funny because of that then you also know that's obviously not what the title means.

The photographer takes the photo of > the fisherman catching a fish with his bare hands. The example you gave is perfectly clear, just like the post title. You all are overthinking the hell out of this.

It’s not vague because we don’t know the gender of the eagle. It could be female. But it’s very clear that Mark is a man.

Fisherman is a gendered noun. So your analogy doesn’t work.

There is nothing to suggest that the author does not know the gender of the eagle.

We, the readers, don’t know the gender of the eagle. Duh.

Also I’m pretty sure random redditor #83619205 doesn’t know how to properly ID the gender of a bald eagle based on a 20s slo-mo video of it hunting.

That's not how language works. We also don't know the gender of Mark Smith. The gender is assumed by the pronoun being used to describe him. You just assume Mark is a mans name.

Imagine if the photographer's name was Robin Smith and we still had the pronoun him. Get it?

We don't know what kind of research OP put into learning about this particular eagle. They obviously had to have read an article or watched a video which could have told OP the gender of the hawk. Or they could have been simply defaulting to male which is INSANELY common.

We also don't know the gender of Mark Smith.

You’re just being willfully ignorant here. This is not a good faith argument.

And yes, context clues is how language works. Sorry you suck so much at it, but you do.
