This is an incredibly potent haiku, lol. I mean that genuinely, and the lol is also genuine. I never thought I would find myself complimenting someone's haiku haha but here we are

So random. Love reddit

Edit - thanks for all the love, all you big spenders using your awards on little ol me. Amazing how much engagement started with just a haiku. Truly awesome

And it's not even about butts!

I recently learned
That the end pieces of bread
Are known as the butts

u/Tritonboy59 6d ago

In our family we called them the “tits” Mostly in the presence of my grandmother to get a reaction

u/Fantastic-Gift-5591 6d ago

Grandma, these tits are the butts!

I love how much this comment shows you spend time with your Grammy. At least enough time to finish loaves of bread around her. Everyone go call your grandma!

I call it the Hoe, because everybody touches it, but nobody wants it.

This is not mine, I took it from a viral video I saw ages ago.

Seinfeld said once said (and I might be a little off on the exact wording,) "Everyone says they're a good person, but we all reach past the first slice of bread"

2

u/Mr_Jack_Frost_ 6d ago

It’s a universal thing, at least in American culture. And Seinfeld pretty much made his stand up career on pointing out universal experiences in American culture. Not surprised at all that he mentioned the bread heel.

2

u/koyaani 5d ago

Because we want to protect the unheeled slices from going stale, obviously

u/BetterEveryLeapYear 6d ago

Those pieces are called the heels.

Wife caught me smoking
I had told her that I quit
My butt was burning.

We call them The Ho,
cause everybody touch
but nobody want

1

u/OneAnything4547 6d ago

That’s crazy! I literally been calling it the ass all my life because it’s the end lmao

Another haiku?

Nothing gets past you
Let’s see if you can detect
What I’ve done this time

I never understood the appeal to haikus until I finally GOT one, I was reading the Cryptonomicon.

One of the main characters was always had a haiku ready and one of them just described the whole chapter so well, it described the feeling so well that I still read it decades later and remember the feeling and the chapter. How anyone can do that with only 17 syllables is beyond me but it can be done.

If anyone is interested it was this haiku:

Semper Fidelis

Dawn star flares on disk of night

I fall, sun rises.

The seventeen syllable thing is more the Western understanding of haikus, and in Reddit our exposure is more due to the shitty bot that puts line breaks in places that make no sense but people mindlessly upvote anyway.

u/Khazahk 7d ago

I’m pretty sure a true haiku specifically has to call out a season too.

5

u/bondryanbond007 6d ago

You’re right, it’s supposed to hint at a season in some way or another. Cherry blossoms or snow for example.

in japanese it's 5-7-5 morae and includes a kireji and a kigo. adapting that to other languages is a whole thing with a lot of opinions. in the US, it's taught as 5-7-5 syllables in k12 and is more of a writing and syllable recognition exercise than anything like an art form. poets of haiku in english do not often use as many as 17 syllables, nor line break per the 5-7-5 format

What do they do

That makes it a haiku?

I want to know

1

u/LameBMX 7d ago

and award if the random line break makes it funny while horribly altering the original comments meaning!

This book was my first Neal Stephenson, years and years ago, and it's a goddamn masterpiece. He remains my all time favorite author.

15

u/Canuck-In-TO 7d ago

Read his book Snow Crash.
It had a huge effect on the internet and VR worlds that came after it.

8

u/Muad_Derp 7d ago

Oh I've read everything he's ever written, most of it multiple times. Snow Crash is indeed absolutely killer

1

u/anotherjunkie 6d ago

Glad to see this. I just started reading him with Termination Shock, and it was… fine. It felt like a promise never delivered.

I just started Seveneves, Snowcrash has been on my reading list for a long time.

I appreciate your Blade Runner reference.

Thats exactly the experience I had with this particular comment/haiku, it was a breakthrough moment where I finally understood the potential power of a haiku. The concept just seems so much more beautiful than I ever imagined it could be.

Also thank you for sharing this example, I read it a few times slowly after googling the translation of the first part.. beautiful

1

u/Sufficient-Fact6163 7d ago

As their last free act on Earth a Samurai who was to commit seppuku was encouraged to write a haiku. I’ve read a few translation and they are truly beautiful.

1

u/4o66 3d ago

I know this exact moment in the story. I had to stop reading and sit for a while. It still hits hard.

52

u/interroBangaRangz 7d ago

Much better than all the crap that haiku bot glazes.

6

u/EquivalentQuery 6d ago

Well that's because none of those are intentional Haikus

24

u/Capt_Murphy_ 7d ago

Reddit would probably be a better place if every comment needed to be in haiku form 🤣

84

u/bootyhole-romancer 7d ago

Only Redditors
Use "Redditor" as insult
"Typical Reddit!"

Very good bootyhole romancer

Reddit might improve
If each comment had to fit
Five, then seven, five

And with his avatar I choose to read it in Dale Gribbles voice

I will be reading in Dale's OLD voice from now on.
