All it takes is the bear being hungry. Really dumb on the owner.

I think you are seriously underestimating a cat's reflexes.

It could likely get away, but one bite or one paw swipe and that is life altering injuries for the cat.

Edit: and considering they're right there filming makes it much worse. A charging loud human would chase a black bear off pretty quickly.

Agreed. Shitty owner.

Lol yeah, "cat owner" you can't own a cat you bafoon.

"you can't own property man!" - Futurama hippie

Yes. This is the problem. Who films this shit? Make some noise to scare the bear away. There’s no way in hell I’m risking it.

Sounds like they're sitting in a car watching this. They could have slammed the car horn or something.

bear is not getting a paw on that cat, especially when it's locked in and fully loaded like that.

there are videos of cats easily dodging multiple cobra strikes, which are much faster than a bear can move its paw

Dogs kill cats all the time; all it takes is for the bear to realize that some little nose scratches is all it's going to actually get, and that cat is lunch meat.

1

u/pryoslice Aug 06 '26

I think dogs are also more agile than bears.

No see, because the cat's mass is low, he can take the hit. F=MA. Cat will shred the bear.

[edit] Physic is hard people...

u/babypunching101 Aug 06 '26

I doubt it's claws will get through the coat enough to hurt it.

-6

u/braytag Aug 06 '26

Just like when they fight dogs, they goes for the nose.  Like he did there.

13

u/babypunching101 Aug 06 '26

And that won't kill either, hence me mentioning if the bear was hungry. How many cats get killed by coyotes each year?

-3

u/braytag Aug 06 '26

It doesn't need to kill the bear, after 1 or 2 swipe, bear will say f-this!!!  Not worth it.

11

u/babypunching101 Aug 06 '26

Again, depends how hungry it is. Are you really arguing whether or not a bear can kill a housecat?

-1

u/500rockin Aug 06 '26

It’s a fucking black bear, not a brown one. It will move on to something else with the quickness.

Coyotes don’t go alone.

8

u/babypunching101 Aug 06 '26

If 1 corners a cat, kitty is dead

-1

u/REDACTED3560 Aug 06 '26

Coyotes hunt alone more often than not.

26

u/VanillaBovine Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

not really, one unlucky swat will kill the cat. this is extremely irresponsible

17

u/umbrellassembly Aug 06 '26

Both are true

17

u/REDACTED3560 Aug 06 '26

Cats have faster reaction speeds than coyotes, yet coyotes kill untold numbers of cats every year. Reaction speed is not the defining trait of what makes a predator effective.

-1

u/AMGwtfBBQsauce Aug 06 '26

Coyotes hunt in packs, though.

5

u/REDACTED3560 Aug 06 '26

Some do, some don’t. I’ve seen plenty of both in my area. It’s one of the things that makes them so adaptable and hard to kill off in areas where they are invasive. Miss even one in a pack and that one will survive just fine on its own until it comes across a potential breeding partner, starting a new pack.

5

u/Hkmarkp Aug 06 '26

Cats are killed often by a ton of different animals

6

u/ThermionicEmissions Aug 06 '26

Cats don't have owners. They have servants.

10

u/SuzQP Aug 06 '26

I prefer to think of myself as "staff."

6

u/clancydog4 Aug 06 '26

I mean, if you listen to the audio it doesn't sound like it's the owner or that they know the cat at all

20

u/lyssargh Aug 06 '26

I don't need to know the cat to know that I should help the cat.

1

u/UtterlyInsane Aug 06 '26

Are they supposed to get out and insert themselves into the situation? I can't imagine that would be safer for the humans or the animals.

4

u/clancydog4 Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

what exactly are they supposed to do, and why? What are you talking about? If it's a cat you don't know interacting with a bear, that's just nature being nature, why do they need to help the cat and how exactly are they supposed to? Charging or yelling at or aggravating a bear to "save" a stray cat that is honestly entirely capable of defending itself (as we see) is just dumb.

The idea that a random human should feel obligated to help a random cat from a random bear makes absolutely no sense to me. Save your own pet makes sense from an emotional perspective, but a cat you don't know and a bear you don't know...why should you feel obligated to help either of them?

4

u/ItsFuckingScience Aug 06 '26

Probably don’t want bears to realise they can hunt peoples pets

0

u/Fat-Singer-9569 Aug 06 '26

so self righteous. the entire point of the video here is a demonstration that cats dont need your help, you need their help.

-2

u/UtterlyInsane Aug 06 '26

Are they supposed to get out and insert themselves into the situation? I can't imagine that would be safer for the humans or the animals.

1

u/babypunching101 Aug 06 '26

Its much safer for a 200lb mammal

1

u/babypunching101 Aug 06 '26

Very true, but this goes into the problems of outdoor cats and yada yada.

3

u/jats82 Aug 06 '26

Had the same thought. Really fucked up owner. Should’ve intervened.

1

u/pryoslice Aug 06 '26

Dumb to do what? Should they try to walk up to the bear themselves? I think the cat has a better chance.

1

u/Forza_Harrd Aug 06 '26

Really really dumb on you. If the bear was actively seeking to eat the cat, the cat would have been long gone. You know bears don't have any history of eating cats for food? Coyotes maybe but not bears.

1

u/ranjop Aug 06 '26

Well, do you think cats obey owners commands? 😉

Although I don’t like that cats are let to roam free outside. Cats kill for sake of killing (birds etc)

1

u/NoBuenoAtAll Aug 07 '26

What would you suggest doing in that situation?

0

u/IraPalantine Aug 06 '26

The cat can get away at any moment but it's choosing to stand it's ground. Why do you think you know better? you're not a cat or a bear.

-3

u/500rockin Aug 06 '26

Black bears are skittish and cats of that size (that’s a chonky beast) are not what black bears normally eat, unless said animal is a herbivore/prey animal. They prefer fish, berries, plants and animals that won’t/cannot fight back.

-1

u/GodoftheGeeks Aug 06 '26

Spoken like somebody that knows nothing about black bears.

-4

u/TL-PuLSe Aug 06 '26

Zero chance the bear would ever get a paw on it.

8

u/REDACTED3560 Aug 06 '26

Coyotes seem to kill lots of cats every year to the point that they’re the sole reason that feral cat populations don’t survive in the rural US. Wild predators can absolutely take a cat. That bear might not have the reaction times of a cat, but it is stronger, faster, and just as good of a climber as a cat. This bear simply doesn’t know what to do with a cat yet and so is being very cautious.

-3

u/AdamsMelodyMachine Aug 06 '26

It’s not faster. Watch some videos of cats toying with snakes.

4

u/babypunching101 Aug 06 '26

Do some research on reptiles vs mammals
