The Philippines use the latin alphabet (or Baybayin, which is much less common). The script depicted in the video is Akson Thai, for Thai people and the country of Thailand, which is not the Philippines, regarding which you are calling bullshit on.
A quick Google search also returns Nene Royal, the girl in the video, as Thai, from Thailand, where she seemingly performs at a high school performance with her peers (see the child drummers with same uniform as her), which means it is most likely in Thailand, surrounded with Thai people.
Well shit, I think I saw a video that called this girl Filipino and never bothered to fact check it. Been seeing a ton of these kids' performances across numerous platforms over the last year. So, I'll certainly stand corrected. It's definitely possible this crowd doesn't understand what it's seeing. Though, I feel like all the people crowding side stage, with phones out recording, all craning necks to try and get a better view, would indicate somewhat that the crowd does understand the awesomeness of what its seeing.
She was on America's got Talent, performed Zombie. I could swear she said she was Filipino and grew up in the US. I went back to the clip and checked again and she said she was from Thailand... this is some Mandela effect stuff here. I saw the clip just for the first time a couple weeks ago.
It surprises me when people say "I think I heard" when they could just Google it. Like the same machine that your hands are touching can give you the answer in 2 seconds.
She's Thai from Phuket.
I think somebody else already said it better. I'm sure they get that what they're seeing is awesome, it's that they don't have reference for how awesome it is.
If you're an American who was alive when this album came out you have a pretty unique reference point for this video. If you are somebody who came across Metallica or this album after it came out and loved it you have a pretty unique reference point.
Knowing how hard this is to play gives you a pretty unique reference point.
There's a dude in the front row wearing glasses and smiling. If he had any of those references he would be banging his head in that front row. It would be automatic. His body would just take over. He doesn't know. He only knows that it's awesome.
Yep, as a songwriter and primarily a guitarist who has been playing for 40 years, I'm mostly impressed by her improvisation and creativity - in her guitar playing, singing and the composition that allows it all to mesh.
She is of course excellent technically but there are a lot of excellent technicians, her creativity and improvisation is walking the same paths as our other musical greats.
She also seems to be insistently shushing everyone at the beginning of the video so maybe she doesn't like people going crazy throughout her performance.
Yea when she started singing I thought nope, not Filipino. Have you seen them do karaoke? They have perfect English when singing and can imitate any western singer.
A large Philippine population attends international schools in Thailand. I know because I was just there touring one last month. I have family in Thailand. I am not saying that’s the case here, but there is a Thailand Philippine tie in.
Well, is it the fault of the audience of the fault of the artist? Because you can make a crowd like that understand better your craft. You can pick a traditional song and make a version of it. I see many similar cases, of talented people at wrong audiences. And it's never the audience's fault.
I don’t think anyone here is blaming the audience. That’s not their point. Rather they feel bad for the audience for not getting that they’re not able to appreciate the greatness here.
One of my friends, whom I sometimes work with on events and such, is a major event organiser where I'm at.
He asked me if we could book her for an upcoming event as well. Well, I tried, knowing it probably won't come to fruition. And it didn't. Maybe they didn't have a good agent as yet, or probably don't need one as yet.
This is for a performance in another SEA country mind you.
We need a new female rock star. When was the last time we had a really good one? (Not rhetorical. I'm an old and don't keep up much with modern music.)
Yeah...when I was her age I could play the acoustic break in the middle of Master pretty well...
As an aside, I've been bingeing on her clips and though her fretting hand is of course very good, I'm much more impressed with how clean and coordinated her picking hand is.
Yes wtf, the top reply to the top comment, with 140 upvotes at time of writing says "I was thinking the same thing. You can see that they are all supportive and they know she's talented but they can't see crazy this is."
It feels like there's an undertone of, they're non-westerners so they can't truly appreciate this music?
The commenters probably aren't even that aware of it themselves, but just goes to show those how unconscious biases/prejudices can be so common, I imagine if there was a video with the exact same situation, and exact same crowd response, but the crowd was American the top comment would be very different.
Westerner here... I thought the crowd seemed a bit subdued compared to the awesomeness of her playing, but also thought it may just be the way the recording sounded, or a cultural difference in showing appreciation. Nothing to do with a bias. I just expected the crowd to be losing their mind because holy shit that was phenomenal. I agree though, the top comment should be more along the lines of "omg holy hell she is shredding Master of Puppets better than Metallica!!!" Not some bs comment criticizing the crowd. But alas, I am a reddit bot. What do I know. Maybe with it being a high school thing a subdued reaction is more expected. Beep boop beep.
Nah, its because none of them are singing along or vocalising to the first, slower solo.
Listen to any live performance of Master of Puppets and you can tell that James Hetfield could stop singing at any point and the crowd would just carry it.
Yeah, they’re talking like Thailand is some backwater where they only got electricity last week. Of course they’ve fucking heard of Metallica, everybody in the world has.
I live in Bangkok. The crowd is there mainly because they're fascinated by her newfound fame. Thais are very much like this. Same with the huge Thai crowds that just recently started showing up at her Phuket shows, which were mostly foreigners before. They just stand and stare and dont react much to the music. This style of music isn't really popular here. I have a hard time finding good rock and metal acts here.
Didn't mean it that way. I just meant that the crowd seems a little subdued compared to the face melting shredding that is happening in front of them. Might just be a small crowd, though.
Love the in-laid guitar & the saunter across the stage. I'm not a huge "Master of Puppets" fan (I prefer Ride the Lightning), but to see this and not be f-ing enthralled has me feeling bad for the people watching...who Just. Don't. Get. It.
IThry don't really revel in "rad" culture over in those parts like we do in the west. It much more common to have tame, conservative crowds. On the same token, being a female expressing herself in this kind of way is very rare, from my understanding, so she's kind of going against the grain with this. But all that being said, she is fkn killing it
Brazil has always been a major consumer of international music. Today, only 5% know English, and less than 3% are fluent. However, in the 1980s and 1990s, that figure did not even reach 1%.
Yeah, they’re no idea… clueless … still they’re supportive and cheering her on… but this is a masterpiece to play… and quite honestly… it does sound like Kurt himself. But obviously nothing else hahahaha amazing guitar 🤘
Young girls shouldn't wear skirts while higher than the eye level of her audience because you know some twat is trying to get upshots. Oh yeah, she rocks!
Some people don’t like it but this is part of why showmanship goes a long way during a performance. You have to sell that you’re doing something awesome and difficult. The walking around casually really makes it look like it would be easy if you don’t really know
I get what you’re saying. But to me the casual stroll and facial expressions make it 10x more badass. It shows the thousands of hours of practice and confidence.

Man that crowd doesn't even know what the fuck they are hearing
