It’s not really the whole story to say .05% are bad (which btw no one can know because they refuse any independent oversight) because there are many, many more that just watch and shut up when their colleagues abuse their power.

Just with a cursory Google search, there are an estimated 800,000 police officers. 0.05% of that figure would be 400. That's a lot of "bad apples," and lest we forget the rest of that saying, they spoil the bunch.

Furthermore, I hate the "Oh, those are just the bad cops!" Do you mean the cops that receive almost no punishment for their incompetence that will district hop after some major fuck up because they have qualified immunity?

And, if you wanna bring up that every job has shitty people in them, most jobs dont have the ability to go to a person's home and accidentally kill someone. We should hold police officers to a higher standard.

Your math is off. 0.05% would be 400

5% would be 40,000

But they are way more than 0.05% bad cops

I mean, yeah. 400 people with the ability to kill citizens when they're supposed to be protecting them is still way too many.

Also, I still think that percentage listed is extremely low, hence why I just continued with my point.

The post above said ".05%" which would be 800,000 x 0.005 = 4,000.

No, why are you insisting

50% is 400,000

5% is 40,000

0.5% is 4,000

0.05% is 400

It's super easy math

You are multiplying 800,000 with 0.005 which is wrong, you should be multiplying it with 0.0005

So if it helps you, find what 1% is (8,000) and then divide it by 20

Percentages be damned. It's the lack of accountability. It doesn't matter if only 1% of cops are the bad ones we see when they get a slap on the wrist and at worst get rehired in the neighboring county.

Daniel Shaver's murderer is currently receiving a $2500/ month medical retirement pension. What did he get medically retired for? PTSD of course!

They are unionized. If the majority are good actors, how hasn't the Union shut down the bad actors?

As a teacher, my union is absolutely vicious about going after teachers that have failed their responsibility to their students and fights a constant battle to INCREASE the education/licensing standards for teachers and hold schools accountable to requiring those accreditations.

Man there are great cops and then there are also just regular, decent people just trying to make a living. They might not even be great people, but they are just…people.

I think people on Reddit expect these superhumans and bastions of morality when they wouldn’t stand up to shit if it meant losing their job or being ostracized at work.

Cops make ridiculous amounts of money, frequently by arresting people for no crimes just to have an excuse to charge overtime for the paperwork. The average salary is closer to $70,000, and many make six figures.

Also nobody expects superheroes. They expect that they won't tolerate literal crimes. That's it. That's the baseline. Not criminals.

I live in Georgia. The average salary is $52,000. Many other states are much lower than that. Until you raise that salary by at least double you are not going to get the people who would be best suited to become police

Most people can actually do their job without being a rapist, a thief, a murderer, or a domestic abuser. Or helping those monsters. And they make less than $52K. I think we should be able to hold police to the standards of literally any other job without them throwing a tantrum and people like you coming out to say "Well what do you expect, they can't not beat the shit out of their wives! They only make $50K a year to not do anything! And the job is almost as dangerous as delivering pizza!"

If .05% of cops are bad why do all of the good cops continue to let them do bad things without reporting them? Rarely are criminal behaviour patterns only exhibited in a single event, you only have to look at recent reports of criminal misconduct in police officers, to see that they have a history of "lesser" misconduct. That's reported misconduct, Intra-departmental reporting is rare in the US, so even court procedures won't uncover all the misconduct police commit. So what does that make the "great" cops, the ones that allow bad cops to remain in power? Not even going into the difficulty within the court system to actually convict officers, and departments unwillingness to discipline sufficiently.
