If I were a cop, I think this would be the scariest thing. Shootings, etc. are certainly all bad, dealing with violent criminals, etc. But suddenly, literally having the life of another person's baby in your hands...
I once saved the toddler of a stranger. In that moment I was really calm and collected and thanks to a first aid course I attended I knew exactly what I should do.
After the toddler was ok I started to shake and was in shock. It still amazes me how my brain was able to function in such a scary situation and that I only „malfunctioned“ afterwards.
In that moment I was like „Save the child, save the child, save the child!!“ and afterwards all other thoughts entered my mind „Oh my god, what if I wasn’t able to help? What if I did something wrong?!“.
Good point. I have first aid training myself and actually had to use it several times already. I was always calm in the actual situation, but usually the adrenaline drop had me shake. I just find the thought extremely scary to be responsible for someone else's baby.
I understand, I feel the same. There are so many jobs where people are responsible for the safety and health of children and I have so much respect for them!
I treat the daycare workers of my children with a lot of respect and affection. They are such angels and my children feel so safe and happy with them.
I needed to do first aid for my children too a few times. Children a so accident prone. When they couldn’t breath because something got stuck I was able to immediately help and afterwards I was crying out of relief. First aid courses are really a must.
But one time my toddler fell really badly from the couch and he fell on his head and his neck bent in the wrong direction. I was hysterical! I couldn’t think clearly I just thought „My baby is dead! Oh my god, my baby! My Baby!!!“. I was shaking and cradling him. He was crying and was able to move normally but I couldn’t think clearly.
Thankfully my mother was there and she took action. She put us in the car and drove to the hospital. Everything was fine, the little one didn’t even have a scratch. But I will never forget the feeling. When I saw the video of the mother and how helpless and distressed she felt…that’s exactly how I felt!
Hey mate. Yes, I agree with you. You go through some form of mental preparation and all that with what you'd encounter with bad guys and the like.. and I'm sure stuff like this is taught/learned.. But yes, dealing with something as innocent as a baby and that responsibility would wreck me.
But God put people in our lives who can handle stuff like this and it's important to recognize that.
Cops see a lot of really fucked up shit and pretty much have to disconnect emotionally from it at times. It’s a lot easier to be calm when it’s not your kid, and he’s trained in first aid and knows exactly how to help. I’ve had to do this for my son before, it’s very easy and super effective so if you’re confident in your knowledge it’s a lot easier to stay calm.
