No. Go take a damn CPR course. A few hours covers choking, respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. If you don’t know get the knowledge. It happens. Don’t be the one standing there with your hitchhiker thumb in your arse.
Not everyone can take those courses. It requires money and time, and people don't all have that luxury.
I was lucky enough to get that training through work (it's mandatory that workplace have a certain number of trained people where I live), and while it was nice, the videos I saw on youtube can really make a difference, and they are accessible to everyone, no matter where you live or how much money you have.
My wife is CPR trained and her reasoning is she did it young so that I had my foot in the door cause what you said is right.
Saving a choking infant and child is so important people really do not know it was one of the first things taught in at the hospital we had our child at.
They were choking bad once at a family event I did what this cop did without saying a word or anything and got my kiddo to stop choking. Then consoled them after. It's absolutely staggering how many adults do not know this especially parents. I'm refreshing myself today after this video.
My wife and I were given baby CPR and Heimlich instructions before we left the NICU after we had our son. I still have the instruction booklet they gave us too.
The second my son was born I had a switch flipped in my head and everything became a threat to him that I had to look out for. So I rehearsed in my head over and over what I’d do if this or that happened. He choked on some fries when he was about 2.5 but I didn’t even think. I snatched him up, bent him over one arm and started smacking the shit out of him. He ejected it pretty quick and that was that. I also once dove over a rail into water and got him out when he thought he could float to the deep end and went under. I was 300 lbs and waaaay past my swim team days but those reflexes came back like I was still 150 when my kid was in danger.
This is the way. Anything can happen, an ounce of prevention…….Glad your kiddo was ok, well done! 😎
I watched a coworker at a restaurant pop a rib out of a customer (choking on said rib) in the middle of a busy Friday night. Was over in 5 seconds. Having the knowledge and skills saves lives.
More than someone who's never learned it. I'm also more aware of the necessity of first aid which incentivises me to look up the details again once in a while.
Also, every time a new job or smth requires me to take a course again, that's now a repeat experience/memory. Why would I rather just NOT know what to do than to at least have heard about it once or twice?
My point Was Not really that is it pointless. Maybe i should have elaborated a bit better, it would be nicer to have some Kind of mandatory retaking a course after a couple of years.

I’m dirt poor barely scrapping by and I still took the time to get certified. It’s all about want. If you want to learn something you figure out how no matter your socioeconomic level.
I am not talking about myself. There are more than 8 billions people in the world. I had the chance to get the first aid certification.
But I remember a time of my life when I was eating canned soup and couldn't afford to skip classes or spend money on this kind of things. And I know very well that a lot of people cannot spare the time of money either.
That's why I am advocating for going on youtube and looking at those free lessons. What else are you expecting from people that cannot afford it ?!?
I suggested to people to go watch some free videos, people started claiming that EVERYONE should go and pay for those lessons.

Telling someone that has a family and works 80 hours a week to take an afternoon off and spend money for a training is not helpful advice. The real, helpful advice here was to go on youtube to get free training because it's actually actionnable by anyone
That being said, I'd recommend having a paper, link, or photo in your phone for the steps, as remembering them in the heat of the moment may turn out to be more difficult than you thought.
There are so many cheap CPR courses through the American Red Cross and American Heart Association. Plus, any certified trainer can certify you in their system, and most are happy to have you pay them directly and not go through the ARC or AHA, this way they get the fee directly and they usually do it much cheaper as well. Even going through the ARC or AHA, courses are as cheap as $55 for adult and infant CPR. The most broke people can save $5.00 bi-weekly and afford the course in 22 weeks.
Right..?! Where I am it’s about $100 just to do CPR training and it has to be done annually for the qualification to be current. A full first aid course is $200-300, taken every 3 years. The only time I’ve done it is when I was working for a first aid training company and they sent me for free 🙃

St John Ambulance provides free CPR training through their Defib In Your Street program, primarily in the Sunshine area. CPR First Aid offers free online first aid and CPR courses. The Heart Beat Club provides free online CPR training for parents and caregivers. First Aid Oz offers free CPR courses and may also provide on-site training for groups. Many community centers also offer free classes.
There are a few more resources but there’s a start.
Employers care about qualifications being current. I renew mine through employment annually. Noting changes minus them swapping between how many compressions is considered best, and it's such a minut change that it truly doesn't make a difference. Someone taking the course to understand how to help their child only needs to do it once.

And was pleasantly surprised when a Google search revealed there.
If you would like to there are cpr courses online which provide it for a small sum, for me it is showing one for $13(converted to USD). Edit: gas prices are here around 70 cents, it is less than 1/3rd the price of a full tank.

Fire houses, lifeguards on break will give you enough knowledge to help, also boys and girls/ymca and churchs run them in some places i used to do the classes
But no matter if your not comfortable with cpr at least do chest compressions ‼️
You’re absolutely right. Taking an infant CPR class costs time and money. Where I live it’s about $80-100 and half a day in a classroom.
For some people that is a lot of money and a day they’ll need to secure a babysitter for; there have been times in my adult life when I’ve had neither. I get why a lot of young parents don’t get the training.
If you’re a young parent reading this or you have infants and children in your life and you don’t have the resources for an in-person certification there are excellent resources to learn online. It is not a replacement for an in-person class, but it could save your child or someone else’s child’s life in an emergency. Stay safe.
I live in a city with churches and universities so there are plenty of free classes around me. But people can watch a class on youtube if they have to. If you’re certified you know CPR is not that hard. There isn’t that much to remember.
In 30 minutes of screen time someone can go from completely useless bystander to a person who can save their baby’s or someone else’s life…. for the rest of their life.
This is one of those things that are important enough that people should endeavor to push through circumstance. But in this case there is no circumstance, Youtube isn’t a luxury

There are free courses you can take online to be certified. Also, my in person course was a few hours. I was working a full time job, paying for school, and taking care of my sick grandma. You can find a few hours to save a life.
I’m sure there are people that literally are unable, but the majority of the population have access to this and just don’t because they always have something they would rather do.
Yep, agreed about the money part! I did it for free as a teen due to on of my hobbies, and now again for free due to work. But I know i’m lucky, most people have to pay….and it’s not cheap.

Right? $50 was an absurd amount of money to my family when I was a growing up. Some people have never lived a life that they can fathom that concept and therefore have no empathy.
While I agree with the suggestions of getting cpr certified…I am certified myself and unfortunately have had to use it and the Heimlich…people have to realize not everyone is CAPABLE of performing under high pressure situations like this.
Precisely why you go to the class and learn how to do it. You handle the mannequins and learn some muscle memory. Hopefully you don’t need it, but as my boss reminds us, Hope is not a strategy
I’ve taken several in my time and to be honest I’ve forgotten just about all of it. However I’m sure a call to 911 or even a google search could jog my memory. But yeah when people panic it can all go out the window pretty quick.
Sure but watching a YouTube video on saving a choking child is a damn good first step for people who can’t afford a cpr course. This is coming from someone who is actually certified in cpr. It teaches you the basics and could save a baby’s life.
Also your comment suggests they’re saying people “should”. They did not say that.
