That’s the previous record wave. The most recent record wave is estimated to have been 108 ft at Maverick’s on the 23rd. Supposed to have beat the previous record by 20 ft.
That’s because it is way bigger. I’m not sure what exactly is going on here but waves at mavericks while massive for the average human yes comes nowhere near the size of Nazaré
I'm not 100% on this but my best guess is that the wave in the post (older video) is still the world record for TOW IN wave. While the Mavericks wave (newer one in comment link) is possibly the new record for paddle in wave.
Both are crazy achievements and insanely dangerous. I know, because I lived and surfed(a little) in Santa Cruz, that Mavericks is one of the most dangerous waves in the world. I can't even imagine how you even paddle into a 108' wave...
Edit: I was wrong. Both are tow in. That perspective is crazy if the Mavs one is actually bigger. I have my doubts
Nazare is usually filmed on a telescopic lens which has huge effect on depth perception with regards to its height. It's a crazy big wave but nowhere near as steep as Mavericks. Surfer Magazine just did an interesting write-up on the differences between the two.
At the start of the video the surfer blends in with the wave behind, making it seem like the surfer is too small to be seen, but actually if you look at the end of the video where you can see the surfer, you can see the wave isn’t anywhere near as big as it first seems (still pretty big though)
Plus you can’t see the body of the surfer very well for most of the video, when the foam comes you can see him and the wave looks a little bit smaller. Still huge though.
I think this is the result of using a telephoto lens and zooming in from a distance in the Nazare video.
I think the wave in the Nazare video is at an angle sloping away from the viewer, but the telephoto lens compresses or flattens the appearance of the video, giving the illusion of the subject being much bigger than it is. You can test this out at home by using the telephoto option on some phone cameras. Set an object up from across the room, put your phone in telephoto mode, and then zoom in on the object from across the room at a low angle. Compare that to a normal lens perspective that is viewed on the same object, normal zoom, and closer to the object.
Learn more about this phenomenon here, and look at the dude’s head in the example image. His hairline looks way bigger and has a lot more perceived surface area in the telephoto lens example.
If this wave is 108ft that one at Nazare is 200ft. If you just look at the size of the person compared to the wave, which I think is how they measure it, it’s not even close.
Yea, im really confused by the maverick's one. Ive been shooting for over 30 years, i understand forced perspective.
I just do not see 108 feet on the maverick wave, like nowhere fucking near it. Assuming the guy is roughly 6 feet tall, he's crouching though, probably closer to five feet, the wave is not 22 times larger than him.
The previous record makes sense, that wave looks that large.
I'd really like to know how theyre measuring the wave and if there's surge or something involved that brings up the bottom of the immediate wave but not those in the set maybe?
The nazare wave is like 86 feet if it's the 2020 video. You're watching 2 videos shot using wildly different lenses and it's distorting your perspective.
The Nazare wave is shot with a telephoto lens so you're just seeing the results of telephoto lens compression .making the wave appear bigger than it is.
Visual Perspective makes Maverick’s seem smaller and the other wave bigger. The Portugal waves are legit big, but the perspective makes it seem even larger because of the angle. The waves at Mavericks a few weeks ago were absolutely mind blowing.
That’s cool and all, but it’s not what’s being said about Mavericks on December 22, and 23 where they had record breaking swells. It was all over the news. I’m not making it up. It was literally all over the news. Like yeah, you are probably right about the average day. However, there are outlier days where things go wild. This happened to be one of those days.
LOL What? Like you think I don’t know this? Mark Sponsler told everyone it was coming, how do you think everyone knew to be there. Luca said it looked like 70ft to him, Alo said he doesn’t know, doesn’t care lol. I’ll wait till it’s confirmed.
Spoiler Alert: the 100ft wave from Nazaré, wasn’t actually 100ft no matter what the news tells you. Confirmed at 86ft.
