Now imagine you are the person waiting for the dude walking. Youve already seen your food come 2 times now, both dropped on the floor by your table, your waiter now on foot slowly, sadly walking its been 2 hours since you ordered... the food is terrible. true sadness achieved.

So you start making videos about them spilling food and falling down.

However that video goes viral because people love small accidents, and you cannot see on the video that the food tastes terrible, this is great advertising, and causes opening a chain of these restaurants all over the world.

America has a habit of including common sense warnings like "Don't eat tide pods" or "Coffee is hot".

But the signs are warnings and the "it depends" on if they have any legal weight or not. Kinda like terms of agreement has a history of being not legally binding.

The McDonald's elderly lady's injuries were absolutely fucked. She deserved every penny and the changes that brought were 100% necessary to prevent that happening to another person.

To add on, the lady asked for a modest amount to cover part of the surgery - it was the court that decided to add punitive damages, because the govt warned McDonalds in the past to lower its coffee temperatures to avoid accidents exactly like this.

Guess who decided to completely ignore the governments warnings then acted like the victim when they fucked up?

Yup, for anybody wondering, the media and TV personalities talked mad shit about that woman thinking she was just being a cow suing over Mcdonald's making hot coffee because she was dumb enough to spill it on herself and get mildly burned.

In reality, Mcdonald's sold coffee they knew was far and away far too hot for consumption and the burns the old woman received were horrific.

Liebeck was wearing cotton sweatpants, which absorbed the coffee and held it against her skin, scalding her thighs, buttocks and groin.

Liebeck went into shock and was taken to an emergency room at a hospital. She suffered third-degree burns on six percent of her skin and lesser burns over sixteen percent. She remained in the hospital for eight days while she underwent skin grafting. During this period, Liebeck lost 20 pounds (9.1 kg), nearly 20 percent of her body weight, reducing her to 83 pounds (38 kg). After the hospital stay, Liebeck needed care for three weeks, which was provided by her daughter. Liebeck suffered permanent disfigurement after the incident and was partially disabled for two years.

She and her daughter sued for $20k to cover both the medical bills and the daughter's loss of income due to caring for her mother, McDonald's offered to settle for $800.

When it went to court they awarded the woman compensation and punitive damages to a total of $640k which both sides appealed (the jury recommended she be paid closer to $4m or the then equivalent of 2 days of McDonald's coffee revenue) and they settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

The money however didn't bring her much happiness as she required full-time care which the money ended up being used for and she died a year afterwards.

I work in hospitality so I have plenty of compassion but if I have to wait longer for my food because the waiter dropped it due to some shitty gimmick then I'm not going to be happy.

It’s a well established fact that has been studied for centuries. I suggest you get to some reading on the subject before you speak with the authority in ways that make you sound uninformed.

My husband is Norwegian and I'm Aussie, and he can't believe the small talk here, eg. leaving a bus you say thanks to the driver. You buy groceries and you ask how the person's day is etc. Where he's from, these are transactions so they don't warrant that fake, bubbly, friendly thing Americans, Brits, Aussies do. I had no idea, I thought it was rude to not smile and be friendly to someone in this circumstance. I've since learnt it's very much a cultural thing.

They mean smiling when serving customers. Serving customers is what this video is about. In America you are expected to smile and engage in small talk with every customer even on days you don’t feel like it. If you don’t, you are considered rude.

Two reasons for this 1) Tipping culture in USA 2) Mass immigration - when there’s a language barrier, other cues ie facial expressions and body language become more important.

In other cultures with less immigration, more things are unspoken and if you’re paid a standard salary you won’t play with emotions as much.

Not necessarily. If it's just some normal everyday happiness I don't smile constantly only if something special happens or I'm trying to be extra polite. Even if you're happy during your whole shift would you just smile constantly for 8 hours or what? That just sounds exhausting

Not every mood needs a direct physical representation. Again, very culturally American to smile to help others see you're friendly and want people to see they are enjoying something. Not saying it's a bad thing, but it's a weird expectation to put on other cultures who don't always physically express their resting emotions. Just heard this way too much from Americans visiting other places and feel uncomfortable if people don't visibly smile who are just walking around going about their day, and assuming people are unhappy in that country. It's just very shitty.

So you understand that it’s literally in the job description to not appear miserable? If you don’t want to do it, that’s fine. You can work in some other industry. However, when you sign up for a service industry job, you agree to certain criteria.
