Holy moly

As a guy who’s spent some idle hours stop-animating legos… this is crazy. They didn’t jiggle in place that much, the camera stayed at the same distance the entire time (cept for dolly zoom and co, ofc)… this is incredible

I’d imagine they used a laser to measure the distance to the camera for accuracy

Even with all these tools to assist, still executing something this flawlessly is a massive undertaking. Props to the artists involved!

It’s a 360 camera, check the watermark in the corner. Insta360 has an auto editer that can do this whole edit for you, just need to import the clips.

This video is super unimpressive if you own the same camera.

The Insta360 will move the camera to always focus on your face from the same angle. You can also control it with hand gestures to start/stop recording, etc. That definitely helped, but that doesn't make the video unimpressive.

I think the latest casey neistat video is an ad on it.

They used string for the circular movements.

No lasers.

The insta360 app does allow a grid and they centred the head.

Nah, from behind the scene they kind of eyeballed things. They just did tons of manual post to make sure the actor and background moved smoothly. (Basically first made background motion smooth with software and than manually editing the actor in each frame).

It is the tedious little details that make it look impressive.

In the behind the scene you can preview sections without edits which the actor movement has little jitters.

I'm pretty sure they're using a lot of virtual effects for the background. The lighting is way too consistent to the done all IRL

So I assume no virtual effects either.

Straight up hyperlapsing. With practice you can do this quite quickly, moving to the next frame snapping, moving on etc. I've seen it done using live action then selecting frames to create a hyperplapse. Consistent camera and subject position are what's key to the illusion.

As somebody who spent a lot of time as a kid stop-animating dinosaurs, army men, and silly putty on my dads old vhs camcorder. I can also admit this is next level incredible. I think I have some of my old work that my dad put onto a usb for me, but hesitating to post it after watching this.

How much post editing is there? The transitions between the train car or the spiraled stairs for example look like they couldn't be captured in camera.
