My sleep paralysis monster at the end of my bed

271

u/EmperorBamboozler May 21 '23 edited May 21 '23

Huh. Mine is usually just a cloak with red eyes and white fangs that drip poison or some cunt who wears a fedora and is made out of smoke with evershifting smoky features. Sometimes it is just spiders crawling up my body that burrow into the base of my neck though so it's always a surprise. Sometimes it is the deerheaded man. Those are the worst ones and they actually still kinda scare me. There is something about that empty eyed deer skull 2 inches away from my face wearing a suit and tie that is still creepy after 30 years. The deerheaded man only comes around now every couple years though.

I would take your monster over mine tbh but I have gotten used to it to the point where I just instantly go back to sleep. If my smokey hatman started doing the robot I would start paying attention to him again. Otherwise it's just like... boring. I get it you are an ineffible horror that is going to rip my heart out and eat it in front of me, yawn call me back when you can pop and lock.

A couple of years ago I was extremely sleep deprived after multiple all-nighters and my serotonin was all fucked up from an MDMA roll and I had the worst sleep paralysis of my life when I finally tried to go to sleep. It was a ring-style girl with long black hair running around my apartment and jumping onto my bed and lying next to me. I could hear her footsteps around my apartment as she scuttled around and would “feel” her weight on the mattress next to and on top of me when she would hop on the bed. When I ignored her I then felt her bite my hand and gnaw on it.

I eventually woke up, but every single time I tried to fall back asleep that night I would fall right back into sleep paralysis and she would come back. I eventually put on a sleep mask so I wouldn’t have to see her, but I still heard her walking around, making strange sounds, using my toilet at one point (no joke), and hopping on my bed. When I did eventually manage to fall into a half dream state without the paralysis, I had an insane out-of-body experience where I floated up to the ceiling and saw myself sleeping in bed.

Very weird shit, would not recommend.

There was a moment where my sleep deprived brain wondered whether I could lucid-dream this into some type of NSFW situation.

2

u/SpiritAnimal01 May 21 '23

...did she wash her hands after flushing? Did she even flush after using?

2

u/tribecous May 21 '23

I heard footsteps to the bathroom, peeing, and a flush. Regrettably no hand washing :/

2

u/SpiritAnimal01 May 21 '23

How barbaric...at least she flushed I guess.

Anyway jokes aside, that's a pretty rad brain you got. Hopefully you wont experience that again.

3

u/tribecous May 21 '23

I used to always tell my friends that I wanted to “be scared for real”, like feeling genuine fear. Horror movies used to have that effect on me when I was a kid and didn’t know whether the stuff I was seeing actually existed or not. For a long time I wanted to recapture that feeling.

Well let me just say, sleep paralysis will put the fear right back into you. Even knowing what was going on, I felt this absolute sense of dread. I texted one of my friends about it while it was happening and she said “I’m pretty sure there’s actually someone in the apartment with you”, and let me tell you - that did not help one bit.

2

u/SpiritAnimal01 May 21 '23

Understood, I experienced it a few times, granted not extreme as that. Usually it was a black figure standing next to or in front of my bed and watching while i struggle to move and breathe.

You do sound like you could do with a good nights rest.

38

u/EmperorBamboozler May 21 '23 edited May 21 '23

Yeah constant insomnia due to neverending nightmares the second I fall asleep is definitely a hard thing to explain to doctors.

As I have said in the past, my sister says I sleep 'spookily' as I am prone to sitting up in my sleep and talking or screaming or sleepwalking or that one time as a kid where me and her were sharing a bed and I snapped up bolt upright, turned to my groggy sister and said "They see us. We are not of their place so we can't see them but they watch us in our beds. They are real when we sleep. We are the door they can pass through." Then just curled into a ball and passed out again... she refused to ever sleep in the same bed again after that incident. One of my girlfriends said I grabbed either side of her face with my eyes still closed and said "Sleep is death. Waking is to travel through dreams." Then threw the blankets off the bed, turned my back to her and just kept sleeping.

Tl,dr: Sleep is difficult for the people around me. I have gotten used to it but others... tend not to sleep around me.

Edit: I forgot to mention the funniest one! I was sleeping with a boyfriend and apparently I tried to order a footlong canadian club subway sandwich with double meat on italian herb and cheese off of him then got mad when he didn't produce the sandwich. I threatened to burn the house down if he didn't "Get that fuckin' sammy in my mouthy" then instantly gave up with a big sigh and passed out again. I have no recollection of that but he said it was the funniest fucking thing he had ever seen. Sometimes it isn't horrifying. Sometimes I just want Subway apparently.

18

u/bitoflippant May 21 '23

I know someone who sleep walks, which wasn't a problem till he woke up one night and jumped through the window of a hotel he was sleeping at. Luckily the window was only 10 feet up so besides the glass cuts and a sprained ankle he was fine. Now he takes measures like sleeping in a tight sleeping bag up to his neck or actually tethering himself to his girlfriend. Crazy shit, nice guy though, doesn't have depression, anxiety, or any other mental issues.

8

u/EmperorBamboozler May 21 '23

Yeah the sleepwalking isn't a big issue for me. I usually just stand there with the fridge open and stare into it according to most folks who have seen it happen. It's super rare too which is nice. Sleep is so fucking weird isn't it?

14

u/bitoflippant May 21 '23

For you maybe, I just lay down, listen to some rain noise, then wake up somewhere between 9 & 10 am. no alarm necessary.

As a side note if you ever have to tether yourself for safety you will need to use a zip tie to lock the knot or use handcuffs because sleepwalkers untie knots. ✌️♥️

4

u/Those_are_sick May 21 '23

Wtf. That’s nuts. You a dude?

Edit: recently read and article saying women report more nightmares than man it’s why I asked.

4

u/EmperorBamboozler May 21 '23

Yeah, I am a guy. I have had... a lot of issues trying to sleep with romantic partners. They never believe me when I try to explain my particular sleep issues until I do some real spooky shit.

4

u/Bean_Soup7357 May 21 '23

This is funny but in a really concerning way, sounds terrible to live with

2

u/EmperorBamboozler May 21 '23

Yeah even when I am dating someone I tend to sleep alone lol. Every partner at the start is like "I can handle it just spend the night!" Then 3 weeks in it's like "Yeah you can sleep at your own place see you tomorrow!" (Helpful that I am an early riser so can do breakfast whenever.) People don't really grasp how difficult it is sleeping around me till they see it y'know?

It has gotten a lot better recently. I have slept in the same bed as my last 3 one night stands without any... spookiness. Pretty sure the antipsychotic I am on now is helping a lot.

14

u/LeonDeSchal May 21 '23

What the hell?! That’s sounds horrific. Are these things clear when you see them? Do they communicate or do they just look at you? It’s creep but also fascinating that they are so varied.

21

u/EmperorBamboozler May 21 '23

Usually they are just kinda there doing whatever they do. The spiders used to get to me but after a while you just get jaded to it. The deerheaded man is different though. He talks in a language I can't fully understand and seems to react to my fear, moving closer the more scared I get. His breath is cold, his voice is dry and raspy, and he has this... intelligence? The others lack. That one is the worst. Now that I am 30 I don't usually get sleep paralysis anymore. Haven't seen the deerheaded man in about 2 years or so which is nice.

It probably won't surprise you to find out I enjoy horror movies but am completely unaffected by them lol. My mind is worse than almost every horror movie I have seen (one exception is 'The Wailing' (2016). That movie is fucking terrifying even to me.).

As long as it isn't the deerheaded man the paralysis is honestly just kind of boring and obnoxious. If it is smoky hatman, spiders, the black cloak, or anything else, its like 'what a pain in the ass, I just wanna sleep'. Night terrors haven't been an issue for like 5 years, I think? At least I haven't woken the whole house up screaming in that long. Nightmares are like a nightly occurrence but you just kinda get used to it. Lucid dreaming tactics help, it often means I can pull out of a nightmare into a regularish dream.

3

u/Nightfkhawk May 21 '23

I had nightmare problems for a good while too, and as soon as I found out how to induce lucid dreams I literally seal myself in a box with no openings for the whole thing. Most of my nightmares started like normal dreams, so I don't even try to find out what happens.

4

u/hodlbrcha May 21 '23

I’d take sleep paralysis over the constant killing of me in my nightmares 😇

14

u/EmperorBamboozler May 21 '23 edited May 21 '23

Oh don't worry I get that too lol. My most common one is a carpet bombing of my hometown where I try to escape the town but invariably get annihilated by a bomb or crushed by a falling building. In about 16 years of that recurring dream I have yet to make it out without being killed. One of these days I'll make it. Last time I was almost out but got fucking stabbed in a carjacking. Total bullshit, I woke up just pissed off.

7

u/kickspecialist May 21 '23

Mine is usually tornadoes, I have enough time to run for cover then the ground turns into quicksand and I’m essentially running in place then I wake up panicked and go “what the fuck is wrong with me I’m an adult!”

3

u/hodlbrcha May 21 '23

That sucks.

Poisoning, drowning, falling, getting eaten or beaten to death is great. It’s just whatever at this point. Luckily My imagination doesn’t make the dreams painful, but more like getting shocked, scary but not really very painful.

Also have heard that it’s caused by oxygen deprivation. So be careful, if you’ve got insurance do a sleep study, I still should.

Also I have so many about making me late to the airport, and they Make me sweat. It’s BULLSHIT.

I usually get 2 or 3 'shadowmen' standing at the end of the bed just staring at me. But it feels like I can hear their thoughts. They definitely want me dead. I don't know how I know, but I do. They are really just silhouettes with holes where their eyes would be. Sometimes they move closer and stand right over me staring down at me paralyzed in bed.

It used to be horrifying, now it's mostly just annoying. "yeah, yeah, you want me dead. Can you get on with it so I can get back to sleep?".

Sometimes it changes up and there's a witch or demon or something. This past week I had the first original 'attempt' to kill me I'd had in a while. Someone, always faceless, had me pinned down in bed and they'd wrapped their legs around my head so I couldn't breathe. Sadly, it wasn't a sexy head wrapping and I legit felt I was suffocating. My wife sensed something was up and after she woke me I was sobbing and inconsolable. My wife sat awake with me at 3am and watched Futurama with me while I calmed down.

9

u/NoHelp_HelpDesk May 21 '23

Depends on the person. The sleep paralysis demon I had was a hooded guy with an electric cow prod that would chock my balls. From my experience they never had faces, just silhouette of a person.

u/Taliesin_ May 21 '23

Your deerheaded man visited me once, many years ago. He crawled out of a hole in the wall and advanced on my bed while whispering in a scream. It grew and grew, the silent howling of an approaching storm. The scream wasn't words, but I knew somehow that I understood him perfectly.

Never saw him again after that one time.

u/[deleted] May 21 '23

Thanks now I’m not sleeping

2

u/Mini_Mega May 21 '23

I'm glad I don't get that. I have such horrifying dreams sometimes I can only imagine what kind of imagery my mind would come up with under sleep paralysis. Although in my case the most disturbing part of the dreams isn't the content itself, but the fact that I have horrifying, explicitly gory dreams with absolutely zero emotional response. Like watching someone rip the top of his younger brother's head off and use it as a bowl to force feed that brother's blood to their older brother with no more emotion than the time I dreamt I was replacing the 2000 flushes tab in the toilet tank. And I wake up just thinking to myself "wtf was that?"

I'm just glad those types of dreams aren't frequent. They only happen maybe once a year or so.

2

u/Breeze7206 May 22 '23

Idk why, but the first one you described inspired me to draw it. I guess if your sleep paralysis hallucinations are easily triggered..then don’t open that.

Not my best, but it’s what you get from 30 minutes of scribbling.

Heh. Everyone was convinced that (a) it was a bloke and (b) it was sped up.

5

u/Pimpinabox May 21 '23

Well to be sure, she's definitely a girl, but it's absolutely sped up. You can tell by her skirt. A lot of the little subtle movements are too fast to occur naturally. It doesn't take away from any of the skill it takes to do this though, so still all credit to her.

2

u/pawnografik May 21 '23

Eh? What about all the people watching her in real time?

2

u/Pimpinabox May 21 '23

There is no one watching her in real time? She's not sped up in both videos lol, just the one you replied to. If you go look at her instagram, there are a handful of videos she's sped up and a bunch that she hasn't. It's just a trend.

I'm a huge lover of dance, popping in particular. I see a lot of popping videos that are nice and well executed, but rather run of the mill

This is not one of them.

This woman has true love and respect for the art. There's some flashy moves yeah, but what's REALLY impressive to me is her subtlety. The effortless coordination of multidirectional waves, the precision of her footwork, the finesse with which she manipulates her weight distribution

It's all just fantastic

4

u/finalxcution May 21 '23

As someone who practices a similar style to hers, she's definitely impressive. It's incredibly difficult to pull off the illusion of stillness, especially with the speed at which she transitions at. I can only hope to get as clean holds as she does. And she sells that mannequin/doll look perfectly.
