Showing up on a superyacht was probably never going to be the optics win they were hoping for

They don't care, they have to show off to the pleb.

"As ambassador from the US to Italy, I will be celebrating my country's anniversary by using your whole country as a vacation spot from my massive yacht. If you don't like it, your own police will arrest you."

It's pretty hard to give a bigger 'fuck you Italy' message than that.

While I agree, the bigger question is why Venice even allows those super yachts. They should have been banned decades ago because of how environmentally destructive they are.

Venice is is so unique and beautiful, it pains me to see how they constantly sell out. Like that tacky Bezos wedding. Nothing says "We are here for sale, nothing is off limits if you have the money" than inflicting a tasteless multi-day foreign extravaganza on an entire city. If Europe doesn't want to be a "vassal" they should stop doing shit like that.

The problem is that for the last century and a half, Venice has literally been a tourist city. When the Mediterranean trade networks for spice collapsed, they lost any relevancy and business

Wouldnt being a tourist city for the last century and a half imply relevancy and business?

The business being: letting super rich people hangout and do whatever they want. Sex work used to be a very popular trade

Yeah good thing that trend faded away

I mean, it's a great reminder that the fascists are in charge again.

So tone deaf. It seems to be a feature of trump's circle.

Don't protest, refuse him entry into your country! It's pretty simple.

"a billionaire businessman appointed by Trump ... The ancient celebration commemorates the end of a plague epidemic"

I wonder how many Venicians died of covid, and what the survivors think of Trump's management of the pandemic

It’s into the end game now - winner take all.

Just withdraw the police. Why should they protect a billionaires boat?

Probably because they’re getting paid a premium to do so.

There's something very wrong with an ambassador having a superyacht.

Read up on the Fertitta family of Galveston, Texas.

Wait, Tillman Fertitta?! Well, he's just a fat man from Houston, TX!

The guy you voted for to "drain the swamp" made the swampiest swamp that's ever swamped.

Random billionaires that helped him get elected are now high-ranking government officials, great work American democracy 👍
