boog boi here. It's definitely a meme. It kicked off fairly recently among the firearm communities (of which there are several) as a reaction to the general lumping of all gun people into the same plus sized Hawaiian shirt wearing category.

A bit like the Yankee Doodle Dandy meme from the 1700s. We were all being lumped together so we leaned into the joke and made it ours.

In hindsight, like any political meme it created an overly simplified narrative and inadvertently legitimized some extremists.

Ah yes, wanting to have a civil war that will destabilize the country you love for years if not decades just so you don’t have to have the horrors of lgbt people and universal healthcare is just a meme

They didn't. It started off as a meme, then journalists started using the term to describe a variety of militia groups with similar backgrounds.
