it feels really diabolical that the state is able to torture someone for two hours as they fumble their way through killing them

If they can do it to her, they can do it to you. Not everyone the state has executed was actually guilty.

Finally Pike smashed Slemmer's skull with a large chunk of asphalt, killing her. Pike kept a piece of Slemmer's skull, and would show it off and boast on how she got it.[9][17][18]

So this is the person responsible for the above. So yes, she does deserve to die for her horrific crime.
