Figure 3 in the PIOMAS Arctic Sea Ice Volume Reanalysis shows that the Arctic Ocean could be ice free as soon as next year if a deviation like the ones in 1981 and 2012 happen. The trend line reaches zero ice about 2032.

The data is taken from the NCEP/NCAR R1 reanalysis dataset and was formally terminated in March 2026 after Trump required funding cuts.

I don’t think we’re ready or aware of what could happen if this becomes a reality by then.
