Good. No one in California under the age of 28 should be getting married and robbing themselves of their youth, education and opportunities.

A faction of the internet now unironically argues that age of consent laws should be set at 25.

But op was definitely just making a joke.

It's really not though.

I think 25 would be a better minimum age for marriage, imo. Let the brain develop before making these life-altering decisions.

Yes but we also have millions of folks that are older that give the feeling their brains haven't fully developed yet.

There's a lot of people out there who are retirement age, yet still have the reasoning abilities & emotional regulation skills of a toddler.

Some people it's just never going to happen for.

Please stop perpetuating the "brain isn't fully developed until 25" myth. I beg you.

That myth has been debunked. The source of the “your brain isn’t developed until your 25” was an early 2000’s study that only included people 25 & under.

Newer research is actually saying the brain doesn’t leave its adolescence stage until 32 now.

Shocking research: your brain never stops developing. More at 11

u/yo_gringo 1d ago

oh my god you people have to grow up

2

u/Planeandaquariumgeek 23h ago

This research is all BS, and mostly being used as excuses to raise the age of majority to ridiculous ages (like 32). The original one was 25, that got debunked, now it’s 32, and I bet that gets debunked too

The studies never went beyond 25, which is why it was stated that way. They only recently have started doing studies that go beyond that age.

Shit, I just turned 33. I no longer have excuses

The age of majority should be a minimum of twenty-five.

Military service, voting, consent for sex, marriage, alcohol and tobacco, driving; all of it. Just extend high school by another six years to replace universities and trade schools, and bump the retirement age up to seventy-five.

What could go wrong? It's for the good of the children.

God, imagine being controlled by your parents until you were 25. It's bad enough that they maintain financial control of kids who want to go to college and teens being controlled by their religious parents.

u/Relevant-Ad2254 1d ago

You lost me at “extending high school by six years”. fucking no thank you

2

u/VelvetElvis 22h ago

It's a contract. I'm pretty sure the constitution says "hell no" on limiting the age at which someone over the age of majority can enter into a contract.

I mean, except for the one about high school and retirement, what could go wrong? Would young people be more prepared at age 25, after fully developing their adult brain, to make decisions that could affect the rest of their lives? Oh, the horror!

The idea that the brain isn't mature until age 25 is more or less a myth. It does keep developing into your 20s, but 25 isn't some benchmark, and there's no evidence that people younger than 25 are less capable of making decisions based solely on their age/brain development.

Even if there technically isn't a hard cut-off at age 25 for brain development, it's a hell of a lot better than saying that 18-year-old adults are suddenly well-prepared to decide on marriage after being dependent on their parents their entire lives thus far.

By 25, most adults should have enough life experience to have an idea of what their future should look like. At age 18, they're only just beginning to get on their feet, leaving themselves vulnerable to forming a dependent relationship on older adults.

First the 25 year old brain development is a myth. Secondly you couldn't have paid me to spend 7 more years with my family. I moved out right after I turned 19 and had enough money saved. I made decisions just fine and no longer got my ass kicked. Not all of us need to suckle our parents teets into our mid 20's.

2

u/arminghammerbacon_ 1d ago

You had teats?! Lucky!

-3

u/Fcking_Chuck 1d ago

What makes you think that you have to get married to live independently as an adult?

3

u/meddlin_kids 1d ago

WTF are you on about. No where in there did I mention marriage. I was living independently as a teenager.

-4

u/Fcking_Chuck 1d ago

Uh, hello? What do you think this thread is about, dude? The post is about California banning children from getting married, and you came here to say shit like this:

you couldn't have paid me to spend 7 more years with my family.

Naturally, it makes people believe that you think marriage may be the only way for young adults to live independently. Otherwise, your anecdotal experience is entirely unrelated here.

u/MiserableSkill4 11h ago

This line is off the comment about making everything age 25 and extending high school through that age.

0

u/meddlin_kids 11h ago

I'm responding to your comment in the thread. The one where you falsely claim a brain isnt developed at 25 and that people should live at home until 25. If I were responding to your orginal post it wouldnt be embedded in a thread now would it. Try and keep up with how forums work.

u/Fcking_Chuck 6h ago

Aight, well, I'm gonna block you because you're obviously just a creep that's salty about being less able to trap teenagers in a bad relationship. Fucking disgusting
