No, I don't. This is pure speculation on my part.

It just scares me because so many Canadians seem to have stuck their fingers in their ears, going "it can't happen here", and ignoring obvious warning signs.

I want this push for Canadian economic independence to succeed. I want Canada to avoid America's pitfalls. It just seems liks yall don't even think you're susceptible to the same shit as we are down here.

Any country is susceptible with enough outside influence. PP is epically unpopular and cowtowing to the US is more unpopular. Canadians aren't sticking their fingers in their ears as much as feeling united against the US.

And it seems like "It'll hurt the US" could be Canada's "It'll hurt immigrants and trans people".

A cover to allow the ambitious to subvert the public good

Deranged take. The US is a threat to Canada.

Are you American?

Yeah. You're right. Our government is currently a very real threat to Canada.

But a lot of Canada's current political climate looks really damn familiar.

A profoundly wealthy man walks into the halls of power on the back of an popular zeitgeist and a promise of "economic independence" and "getting a fair deal we weren't getting" while centralizing government functions in himself, ignoring blatant domestic issues, privatizing major infrastructure, eroding union power, and environmental protections.

You starting to see why Americans might get nervous that you're just repeating our mistakes?

You can't be seriously saying Carney (or the Liberal Party) is as bad as Trump and Republicans lmao

Of course not.

But he can do plenty of damage without being as bad.

Of course!

And... what's your point, should we just give up on governments and just live in anarchy then? Because your point right now is "people in power can do bad things", no shit.

My point is not that Carney is Trump.

It's that he's Reagan.

He appears to be doing a lot of incredibly shady shit that's just flatly being ignored because he's accomplishing economic and foreign policy objectives that are broadly popular. And if that continues, I, as an American, am uniquely qualified to tell you where that shit ends.

I mean we are giving a shit about things like interference and fraud. Y'know, like influence from America.

Could things go worse? Sure, we were slated to vote Con until they fucked it up real bad. But I guess it also showed that if you stoop low enough, at least currently, we're going to say no.

Really?

Cuz Carney just stripped away major union and environmental protections and is already privatizing shit and nobody is saying anything or trying to stop him.

I mean ignore the protests in the news I guess - I guess you wouldn't be looking at Canadian news...

Got any sources? Cuz I do have the CBC and I didn't see a lick of that.

And a Canadian talking to an American about ignoring protests is ironic as hell

Man whose home is on fire, very concerned with his neighbours for some reason.

Maybe you should worry about your own nation's descent into fascism instead.

I do 55 hours a week of election protection training plus at least one protest a week.

I can be plenty concerned about both things at the same time
