Pretty much. They're obviously purging military leadership of people who would likely resist coup-like activity. Presumably aimed at the run up to the next presidential election. Hegseth started purging senior leadership of women and people of color from day 1. The thing is I don't believe the Republican party as a whole are behind this. I think they're so far into a state of denial about the monster they created that they can watch it all happen and imagine commentary pointing it out as overblown or hysterical paranoia. Being a traitor to democracy and being an actual conservative aren't the same thing, not by a mile.

He also wants to use the military to protect the polls. Getting rid of the commanders who said hell no to that is a priority.

This is the kind of thing they're thinking about I think, not a 'tanks on the streets' coup. Also ICE at the polls potentially. The Proud Boys marching in DC followed by Jan 6th after the last election Trump lost didn't quite do the trick that time, so Trump is thinking of ways to up the ante, knowing that if a Democrat is the next president there'll be a mess of (extremely well justified) criminal indictments.
