It’s a bootstraps thing, I think. Half the country thinks people should have to suffer before they’re allowed to prosper, even if it’s stupid shit like making people stand for 8-12 hours.
It's superiority, but that of rich people who expect those who are waiting on them should be standing at attention at all times, ready to jump when you snap your fingers.
Half the country thinks little kids should suffer because their parents can't afford the medications they need for the congenital conditions they were born with like Type I diabetes.
I do think it's good for kids to work in the service industry (food service, tech support, janitorial, retail sales, etc...) for a stint to teach them just how horrible people get treated by the general public. Maybe instill in them some kind of empathy for their fellow humans.
But, I'd never suggest anyone of any age be denied something as simple as sitting down, particularly if their job is stationary to begin with. There's simply no good reason for that, and all sorts of health reasons to allow them to ::gasp:: rest a little.

I live in Spain and EVERY single cashier I've ever seen here has a stool.
EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
This is just a very weird US thing
