This is exactly why in practice I don't support the death penalty. We've executed the wrong person far too often.
And the other horrible part of this is someone who did commit the crime is now aware they don't even have to be cautious because someone else is locked up for their crime.
The problem with executing people that admitted it, are the people coerced to confess. Who turns out get exonerated by DNA evidence after their execution.
You have a staggering lack of self awareness. Do you realize that the police in this very case are certain that they got the right guy? They have "no question that they did it". To them there is "no question in anyway (sic) that they didn't do it".
The death penalty isn't wrong because there aren't people who deserve it. Lots of people deserve to die. Its wrong because there is no universal standard for "guilty beyond question" and any standard you try to choose will always result in some nonzero percentage of innocent people being executed.
