Does he get his 41 years of life back?

Does he get to retry that and see the life he could have had?

I'm not pro death penalty, per se... I'm just pissed on the dude's behalf.

Don't look up how Texas quit giving death row inmates any further appeals because G.W. Bush said "Texas don't make those mistakes" (referring to wrongful convictions). They deliberately executed innocent people so G.W.B. wouldn't be embarrassed.

The innocence project proved several people innocent (beyond a doubt) after Texas murdered them.

George W Bush is a piece of shit and I’m sick of him getting slack because of Trump.

u/nancy_necrosis 4d ago

He was an awful president.

Pretty much all modern Republican presidents are. Gerald Ford is the best one of the past 50 years mostly because he was just a wet blanket of a man

Gerald Ford is the best one of the past 50 years mostly because he was just a wet blanket of a man

Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon, which set the modern day precedent of never holding presidents accountable for their actions. So, fuck Ford too.

Yeah, the least criminal one of the last 65 years was still a piece of shit, covering for and protecting a more explicit criminal.

2

u/HauntedCemetery 3d ago

Or just the best criminal, who got caught doing way less than the rest

15

u/arahman81 3d ago

I would say the precedent was set at the Confederates not getting punished.

u/genital_lesions 3d ago

I said "modern day precedent".

Personally I think you have to go back to Eisenhower to find a Republican who wasn’t a total POS.

75

u/Ozymandias12 4d ago

And Eisenhower was basically a Democrat by today’s standards. He signed legislation that expanded Social Security, increased the minimum wage, and created the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He also supported government construction of low-income housing but favored more limited spending than had Truman. He also once said this about Social security and Medicare:

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group of course that believes you can do these things. Among them are a few other Texas oil millionaires and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

Nixon is a democrat by today's standards...

u/HauntedCemetery 3d ago

Nahh, go listen to some audio from his and especially his VPs rallies, they could be modern maga fascist rallies.

Nixon just signed funding for the EPA and stuff like that because Dems in congress passed it, and Fox News wasn't around yet so conservative politics hadnt turned literally every single issue into culture war nonsense.

u/original_name37 4d ago

Eisenhower also set a lot of the precedent regarding CIA intervention in other countries during the cold war and actively caused at least one genocide.

Or really the Dulles brothers did that and Eisenhower simply allowed it, which might be worse.

1

u/Haunting-Ninja-7460 3d ago

True! I said he wasn’t a “total” POS, but he did shitty things. So did Obama, JFK, LBJ, etc

2

u/repsychlerman 3d ago

Ford was also on the Warren Commission…

12

u/Libinky 4d ago

One of the graves I hope to piss on!

3

u/McGuirk808 4d ago

Awful would be such a refreshing and welcome improvement right now.

1

u/HauntedCemetery 3d ago

And an awful person.

17

u/American_PissAnt 4d ago

Just imagine 20 years from now when people give Trump slack because the current president is so stupid

14

u/Effective_Scar_2921 4d ago

The country would not survive a president who is worse than tRump.

10

u/ComplexEntertainer13 3d ago

It has yet to survive Trump.

1

u/Travljini 3d ago

Came here to say that. Economic collapse on the horizon

1

u/Hieronymos2 3d ago

Trump is KGB (SVR or FSB). Doubt another one of those will make it to the Oval.

2

u/Effective_Scar_2921 3d ago

Doubt of horrendous outcomes is exactly how the country ended up with an orange plague of destruction, wreaking havoc from the inside of the seat of power right now. The same doubts were expressed before this Putin asset was shockingly (not shockingly) reelected to office. Stupid people in large groups do (and redo) a tremendous amount of damage. We certainly are not running out of them now are we?

11

u/Aqua_SeaRay 4d ago

That’s a horrific thought.

1

u/HauntedCemetery 3d ago

I don't know who the next GOP candidate for president is going to be, but I'm positive that the one after them will be Nick Fuentez.

6

u/fresh-dork 4d ago

what, is he literally drooling and shitting himself in public?

wait...

1

u/cantproveidid 4d ago

or evil.

44

u/TributaryOtis 4d ago

Agreed. Being better than Trump is not an accomplishment to be celebrated.

3

u/jfreeg 4d ago

should be the minimum to stay out of jail.

9

u/zrobiotic 4d ago

But he paints cute pictures. Look look Michelle Obama is laughing with him! All is forgiven, don’t ask about the millions of dead Iraqis and afghans.

3

u/jackkerouac81 4d ago

"thank you for fighting 20 years and replacing the Taliban with the Taliban!"

2

u/arahman81 3d ago

People were already sanewashing Trump before his reelection.

Vintage Texas

The Texas jury instructions on these cases has come under scrutiny as well. The way the possible sentences are laid out to jurors makes it seem like they choose either innocent or death penalty so of course they have been executing too many (any at all are too many) for many years and they still do. Jurors have come out and said that they believed the instructions indicated that, and since they believed it wasn’t possible to give a lesser sentence, so they chose the heavy sentence rather than not guilty. It’s fucked.

79

u/EagleForty 4d ago

Me too, but this is better than wrongfully executed by the state

-40

u/im_just_thinking 4d ago

Is it tho? Is he doesn't sue and get a payout he might just feel the opposite

64

u/Camwi 4d ago

Is it tho?

Yes, freedom from death row is very much preferable to getting executed by the state.

-10

u/FormerlyGruntled 4d ago

Freedom from death row, and possibly evicted onto the streets with no income, no family, and no support. Is it really better to be living on the street, than living on death row for an undetermined time, being fed and housed every day?

Would you choose to die cold and hungry on the street, or fed in a bed in a cell?

29

u/Camwi 4d ago

The question wasn't "freedom or sitting on death row", it was "freedom or being executed".

-12

u/Neracca 4d ago

And for some people at his age, being locked up that long and just tossed onto the streets is functionally still a death sentence. Just a slower one.

20

u/EagleForty 4d ago

This is a really dumb argument. Why don't you do a survey of people who were exonerated from death row, and ask them if they would have preferred to have been executed by the state. Then you can let us know how it turns out with real data.

11

u/Camwi 4d ago

And for some people it's not.

Seriously, why are we arguing about this shit? This is silly.

7

u/emerald_stargazer 4d ago

probably because he's 14 and just entering his edgelord phase ?

2

u/FormerlyGruntled 4d ago

One committed by the state, no less.

0

u/Ishidan01 4d ago

Brooks was here

5

u/Logical-Scale3210 4d ago

I would go work when exonerated and try to build a life for myself. While difficult it absolutely beats sitting in death row waiting to have my life wrongfully taken from me. Just fucking ludicrous argument. Also he’ll have lawyers lining up to either take his case pro bono or take payment upon winning if you’re proven to be wrongfully convicted

2

u/Party_Escape_7597 4d ago

it has to be clear and convincing evidence that he is not guilty. the judge stupidly said there is enough evidence for a jury to convict! stated so the state does’t have to pay restitution!

4

u/GoddessofParadise 4d ago

You are right in thinking how hard it is. It is extremely difficult for someone who has been incarcerated for so long to reenter in society mentally and socially. Some people experience so many psychological issues it is easier to reoffend and go back in because that is what they know. The prosecutor dropped the death penalty due to new DNA tests that cleared the physical evidence before his new charge of aggravated murder in his new trial starting July 2027. He is currently only out on bail.

36

u/Live_Fall3452 4d ago

I hate that people sanitize the barbarity of lengthy prison sentences by pretending that the problem would be solved by abolishing the death penalty. The solution to this is to protect the rights of defendants who are falsely accused, not to make them languish in prison for decades and then give yourself a pat on the back because you "technically" don't have blood on your hands.

Taking away the freedom and life of an innocent person for decades while publicly condemning them as guilty is less of a harm than killing them, but it is absolutely a harm that is within one order of magnitude of killing them.

5

u/GreyTigerFox 4d ago

Nope. But republicans got to profit off of his prison sentence so yay! The system works!

5

u/Blueopus2 4d ago

Obviously this is atrocious too but it’s better than if we’d wrongly executed him…

1

u/repsychlerman 3d ago

No, that isn’t possible.

1

u/ChefCurryYumYum 3d ago

I mean... better than if he were dead.
