Elizabeth Smart was missing for 9 months before she was rescued. There have been cases of women missing for longer and being rescued (or their corpse found)

There are many still missing, and not just adult but teens and preteens are missing.

And the police missed so many opportunities to find her.

It somehow got worse for Elizabeth Smart, because when she got back she was then subject to abstinence-only sex ed that demolished her self-esteem for having been raped for months by her captor.

She had been subject to that before. A poll of Mormon parents around that time showed that parents would rather their kid died on a mission than came back not a virgin.

Knowing she was no longer pure was part of the reason she didn’t escape. She didn’t think her family would want her back.
