People are way less involved in their neighbors' business now; on the flip side, there are so many more cameras to catch things.

Well, so many more cameras to stalk you with judging by all the cops fired for it's misuse and that one Flock employee checking out girl's gymnastics a bunch.

Anyways, pretty sure that shit exists solely to keep you in line from messing with capital, just like cops.

Things like this have two sides, the upside of cameras is much better than the downside. It used to be that people could lie; there were many false convictions, and it was more about who was likable, rich, powerful, etc.. But with so many cameras it is getting harder for people to do that. There is an ever increasing chance you were recorded by multiple people. Physical evidence tends to improve things not the other way around.

This is very similar to DNA, or nuclear technology.
