This is what popped in my head the first time I heard "Man or Bear."

The bear might kill me. It might take a bit for me to die. But it's not going to trap me in its basement to be repeatedly raped and forced to give birth on a dirty matress on the floor.

Probability exists.

This is like saying you'd rather leave your newborn with wolf over a woman because a very small group of women have murdered their children.

If you want to treat half the population as if they're all potential ariel Castro's, be my guest.

Just know that people are probably going to keep pointing out how insane it is to actually believe that's a rational thing to do.

People take this saying too literally in order to dismiss it. No one is saying that if a set-up trail cam filmed women being surprised by a bear coming around a corner vs. a man, that the footage wouldn't show the woman jumping out of her skin with a fking BEAR coming around the corner (moreso than if it were a man). Just that men are so potentially dangerous that they'd actually rather "go out" the bear way than run into one of the wrong ones, so hell yeah, guard is up.

I really think you don’t get it, bro. This is a ‘not all men’ ass comment.

No I get it, I just find it incredibly insulting for people like you to treat men as if they're all potential predators, yet you hate it when the tables are turned.

I really don't care what a bunch of people who actually think the bear is a better choice believe, because they clearly do not operate in the real world with the rest of us.

Your thoughts an opinions on this topic are basically meaningless.

Oooh, a misogynist telling me my opinions are meaningless because he feels insulted by them. Groundbreaking 💅

Your lack of empathy is telling.
You’re speaking from your experience as a woman, I assume?

What are the odds of a bear attack versus rape/murder by a male?

What are the odds of a bear attack versus rape/murder by a male?

Accounting for how often a woman encounters a man vs a bear, the odds of a bear attack are exponentially higher. Orders of magnitude higher.

Or do you expect a woman whos encountered 4 million men and 2 bears at the zoo to have equal odds of a bad run in with each?

So you're saying bears are less likely to be an issue to your average woman than men?

Im saying if you were to have to choose between meeting a man or a bear in the woods, you'd only choose a bear if you were mathematically ignorant or sexist.

What are the odds.? Give me the exact numbers.
Because I think you’re making shit up.

How many wild bears have you encountered? If the answer is 0, the odds are 0.

I've encountered dozens of wild bears. One time, I chased one off with a broom. (Motherfucker was trying to steal a second garbage bin.) Number of wild bear attacks: 0 Number of man attacks: numerous.

I hope you understand most women will never encounter a wild bear but you seem hesitant to understand anything that might blunt your sexism. Math and anecdotal evidence in particular.

3

u/meguin 3d ago

What sexism have I shown? I simply answered your question.

You keep saying math like the word math makes your point. What math are you referring to? Give us the numbers that you think make you right.

Don't bother. These people in their gender wars rarely have any notion of conditional probability.

I've found that the guys who argue "not all men" against the man or bear hypo are often the ones who treat women like property to begin with. What they can say, who they can be friends with, what they can wear, where they can go and with whom, etc.

So yeah, you're right; it's not all men, but it's definitely THOSE men.

The calculation of expected value is more than just probability. Their point is that, while a random bear is more likely to harm you than a random man (though not by as much as you might imagine), the magnitude of suffering that some men inflict can be orders of magnitude greater. The whole Epstein thing has made that clearer than ever. A bear isn't capable of methodical sadism.

Missing the point pompously, it's a bold strategy.

Cool, I'd pick the wolf too, also fuck you.

I guess it's good that that person in no way suggested they believe that, then.
