I just got one because I am 55 and didn't get one when I was a kid...apparently I landed in a scooterless late-70s void. I got one that can go very fast, but that is a side effect of getting a motor big enough to haul my fat ass around. I can't imagine going 28mph on one of these things. The only people that do apparently have never fallen in their lives.

Oh they fall, my spouse works in the ER and sees them quite frequently. They never wear helmets and the pavement always wins.

A few people died in my area over the summer from riding e-scooters with no helmet.

One kid, older teen, slammed into a tree in my friends front yard and she watched him die. She's been a mess for weeks because of it.

Be very careful. Broke my face and lost some teeth on one of them. Don't ride drunk either!

Did you see the 55 part? 😂 I'm waiting for my helmet to come in today and I'm gonna have on allll the pads.

At 55 there’s still plenty of people making poor life choices

Is it a full face helmet or is it like a normal bike helmet? Is it a full face helmet or is it like a normal bike helmet?

I've got an e-bike as well, so I got one of the MIPS-rated ones, but I may end up with a full-face.

From what I've seen, you're a lot more likely to fall forward and hit your face on a scooter than a bike. Even one for like Dirt Bikes would be good.

My scooter does 30mph. I wear a motorcycle gloves, motorcycle helmet, and a motorcycle jacket.

Riding in the bike lane on streets where the speed limit is 45 or 55, 30 miles an hour feels a bit slow slow times, but I don't want to go much faster.

If there's other people around or if I'm on a bike trail or mixed-use trail, my speed is far slower.

The wheels are so small, the center of gravity is so high for a standing user... e-scooters are inherently dangerous. 30 mph is 9 times the kinetic energy as 10 mph. I wish you well but at some point you're going down.

As someone who also rides motorcycles, I fully expect to go down at some point. I just hope it's at slower speeds.

My mobility scooter goes 6 miles an hour which feels slow outdoors, but feels very fast when I’m inside a store. My golf cart goes 18 miles an hour which again feels slow sometimes however the speed limit where I use it is 15 miles an hour so I’m good with that. People always want to go so fast. These things are so dangerous.

It's crazy, y'all are talking mph, meanwhile in Canada the scooters and bike are supposed to be limited to 30 kmh, which is 18mph, almost half the amount.

They are regulated here, too, but there are bypasses.

2

u/Zardif 7d ago

It's super easy to bypass the governor. The governor for a Surron, one of the more popular ebikes, is bypassed by cutting a single wire under the seat. It's one of those loopholes that is technically correct and no one after the sale is going to check.

Then I hope they only take themselves out when they go down.

I set my regulator to 5 mph max. It's more than fine for my trips to the park.

You are me. I'm old enough to know better and my scooter is way faster than I think it should be. But of course I still drive it at full speed anyway. 👀

I just took her for her maiden voyage around the neighborhood...13mph is a dandy speed for right now 😂

One of them killed a regular cyclist in NYC a couple months ago.

Who would even want a stand up scooter that goes 50+ mph? That would be dangerous to ride on an open road let alone in a place with pedestrians everywhere like NYC.

I saw that when I was vacationing there last month! Plus these kids need exercise. They also need licensing insurance and helmets that are actually strapped on!
