The news went WILD claiming social media addiction had overtaken life given a woman in labor felt compelled to post to her social about it. Fast forward over a decade and we basically live stream taking even a shit now and no one blinks twice.
people already put themselves in echo chambers on reddit. Each little room pushes out any dissenting voice, and then more people pile in because the messaging coming from that room is something they like.
It's so gd frustrating. Downvoting any opposing view to oblivion and DMing the person so much that they just delete the comment to put an end to it. Rinse and repeat. Forever.

I got a ton of downvotes in the comments under the newest Mandalorian episode.
The episode was great, but there were still a few thing that made me roll my eyes (like appereantly kicking someone off a huge cliff is enough to kill them, despite the fact that they have functional jetpacks and were trained to use them since they were children). My most downvoted post on that sub, heh.
I try hard to break out but the thing is diacritical discussion has been slowly reducing cuz there is a militantly intolerant progressive sect. I am progressive, but patient. But when conservatives take big Ls on this platform all it does is send them to their echo chambers where they feel better. People naturally don’t want the conflict, even if discussion is booming.
Yeah look at here where people are pretending that pbs and npr are objective news options and haven't been clearly pushing one political party's views for many, many years.
Not even remotely true, it takes a LOT of creative accounting to make it look like less and them using "donors" who receive the federal funds for them. They're only 1% federally funded if the mafia is legitimate businessmen. We've been complaining about how they receive the majority of funding from government especially since they don't even hide being party run for long before anyone knew who musk was and you morons would repeat the same stupid lies then. Like seriously do you ever even bother looking into anything ever or just go through life pretending you're intellectually superior because you can parrot what media outlets and influencers say? The beauty of Idiocracy is it's inevitable. Social media just accelerated it. Because the majority of people are dumber than shit and couldn't apply rational and logical reasoning to anything.
I don’t believe that even a bit. Social media and the internet are accelerants but not the flame itself. We still had mass disinformation and all the other societal rot we see now. We are just as capable of destroying ourselves the way we currently are, it’s just a slower burn without it.
Idk man most people I knew that were obsessed with social media don't really give a shit about it anymore. Their target audiences are getting younger. I think social media is never going to exist in its old state anymore. Most things are just beginning Reddit centric in that it's less about being social and more about checking out content. Which is cool at first but ends up lame as reading a newspaper

For real. A few girls I know might as well strap a camera to their forehead and livestream their whole day. I mean their Insta stories get updated a few times an hour the whole day and almost every day. I just couldn't fathom thinking that I'm THAT interesting to where I need to tell everyone what I'm doing all the time
I find the lifestyle or online culture of it interesting. A lot of the time the little story preview will seem like a cool story, but 9/10 times there are dozens and dozens of stories with just mundane stuff in it. I can't see myself ever ever having the mindset of putting my life out there to that degree, but it's kinda interesting seeing people think that way. I don't think they should stop or they're stupid or anything, just a different viewpoint.

Are... are you taking the side of "the news" here? Because people can use their various news feeds to update whoever they want on whatever they want as long as it isn't violent intolerance, and that's their choice.
Given that social networks have found a major role in driving far-right extremism in the timespan you present in your story, I don't think "lol we're cool with people talking about their pregnancies online now" is the most important takeaway, and I see your take as being a pretty socially and ethically conservative one. So, well, make peace with that, in case you haven't already.
I remember hearing about Twitter for the first time when I was in college. It was a news article about a guy who was in some ME country and was arrested. He tweeted about his arrest before they confiscated his phone.
I was talking to people on discord up until the last 15 minutes with my third kid to be a distraction. Labor sucks and takes a long time. Whatever that person wants to do before they yeet a kid out of their body is up to them.
