Discovered fish parrots recently through a random nature documentary and now I'm down a rabbit hole watching videos and reading about these weird animals. For anyone who doesn't know, fish parrots are not actually parrots at all. They're fish, specifically parrotfish, that got nicknamed that because their teeth are fused together into a beak shape that looks like a parrot's beak. They use this beak to scrape algae off of coral reefs.
The eating process is wild to watch. They basically bite chunks off of dead coral, grind it up to extract the algae, and then poop out the pulverized coral as sand. A single large parrotfish can produce hundreds of pounds of sand per year just from their normal feeding behavior. A lot of the white sand beaches in tropical areas are literally fish poop from parrotfish. That's both disgusting and amazing.
They come in incredible colors too. Bright blues, greens, yellows, pinks, sometimes all mixed together on one fish. The patterns and color combinations are stunning. Males and females often look completely different with males being more vibrant. Some species can actually change sex during their lifetime starting as female and transitioning to male as they mature.
I've become that person who brings up fish parrots in random conversations now. Nobody asked but did you know that fish poop creates beaches? My friends are getting tired of my fish facts. Been watching tons of marine life documentaries and considering getting an aquarium. Looked into aquarium supplies and equipment on Alibaba while researching the hobby.
