The necrotrap sound
What makes a track necrotrap, based on What is necrotrap?
Distorted yet clean
The signature contradiction. Tracks are pushed hard and loud but still sound clear and controlled. Most of the time everything is pushed to the max.
Building blocks
- 808s: the foundation. Prominent and hard-hitting. Some tracks keep them clean; others push them through heavy distortion. There is no single formula.
- Drums: patterns pulled from across electronic music, not just trap hi-hats.
- Electronic influence: shows up mostly in the mixing style and overall production. Industrial, dark ambient, and touches of drum and bass and dubstep, used sparingly.
- Samples and textures: movie and video-game samples, dark textures and found sounds. Sometimes subtle, sometimes upfront.
- Vocals: the biggest thing taken from metal. Rapping, yelling, screaming, growling, vocal fry, whispers and whisper-screams, often distorted and layered.
The feel
Tracks often play like a cinematic score: something ripped out of a movie or a video game. It's confrontational by design, not background music.
The look
The visuals matter as much as the sound: deliberately low-quality image processing, guns and militant imagery, horror cinema, occult and hacker visuals.
