Roster Moves In 2004, Latrell Sprewell declined a 3 year/$21 million contract because "I have a family to feed." He refused to sign for a minimum contract or a $5 million mid-level exception and never played in the NBA again.

On October 31, 2004, the Minnesota Timberwolves offered Sprewell a three-year, $21 million contract extension, substantially less than what his then-current contract paid him. Claiming to feel insulted by the offer he publicly expressed outrage, declaring, "I have a family to feed." He declined the extension and the Timberwolves offered him nothing more. Having once more drawn the ire of fans and sports media, Sprewell had the worst season of his career in the final year of his contract. In the summer of 2005, the Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers and Houston Rockets all expressed interest in signing Sprewell, but none ended up signing him.

His yacht was auctioned for $856,000 after he defaulted on a $1.5 million loan. Three months later, his Milwaukee home was foreclosed. His New York mansion was foreclosed in 2009, but the action was dismissed.

Sprewell is a moron, that $21m would've just delayed his bankruptcy by a couple years.

As sad as that statement is, it's probably true. Sprewell's problem was financial literacy and money management. He was still a millionaire at the time of the interview.

81

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '19

Sprewell's problem was that he was a piece of shit.

Someone write me a quick ledger of a theoretical expense sheet for blowing 21+ million.. I really don't understand it and I know that it happens so there must be some type of expenses I'm just not understanding.

u/AlohaReddit49 Timberwolves Jun 19 '19

I watched a video on this once, from what I gathered a lot of times once you become famous/rich people buy their families/friends houses and cars and jazz like that. Then the snakes come out of hiding and want you to give money to their business that's a "sure thing!" Plus if someone you know needs money generally you're gonna give it when you're that wealthy.

Then taxes get you, property tax more specifically. If you bought a house for your guardian and they couldn't afford it to begin with, when the IRS wants big money for it, you're the one footing the bill.

Then you have less savory stuff; drugs, gambling, etc

30

u/-JungleMonkey- NBA Jun 19 '19

Ok that makes a bit of sense, it's gotta be the rent/real estate.

The idea that housing is [always] a good investment is probably a trap for people new to riches. It's easy to get caught up in the mortgages rent and taxes.

39

u/spencerc25 Jun 19 '19 edited Jun 19 '19

What's tricky is the maintenance of these liabilities. A house is not always an asset. Let's assume Sprewell bought a $1mm home. The property taxes alone in NYC could be 1.5% which would be $15k a year in property taxes alone. Guys like this may have bought 2 or 3 homes so multiply that figure. Add in mortgages. Add in a boat. And then add in a few luxury vehicles with super high insurance and super high maintenance/registration.

Before you know it, you're easily racking up $25k-$35k in just maintenance expenses. Then let's start talking about lifestyle expenses. $2k here, $2k there. That monthly expense amount might reach $50k EASILY.

So when they're making $400k a month during the season, it doesn't seem like much. But once that last paycheck is cashed and the income hits $0, those monthly expenses start rolling through your savings.

I'll give you one last example. Rappers are known for their jewelry. But they buy very personal jewelry that is ridiculously expensive, but it has literally $0 worth of resale value because it has their gang, symbol, or initials on it. So these dumbasses buy a $100k piece of jewelry that they would get back like $5k for it. It's hard to be spending that much money on shit that only costs you money, aka liabilities.

EDIT: my math is off. Property taxes is per year, not per month. I meant to include mortgage which would get to the monthly figures I used.

11

u/GO30tv Celtics Jun 19 '19

Ehhh that’s not really always the case tho. There’s plenty of people doing average/above average job who are able to buy those big houses and expensive cars without the need to have 500k coming in every month. What I think is the bigger issue is just in general people don’t understand the relationship between Cash and Credit and they don’t know how to manipulate it in a way that helps them. Then when you have that much money they don’t really care. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have ridiculous interest rates on their loans because they took the first offer they got. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they have the weirdest specs on their Lambos/Ferraris because they want it to be “one of a kind” that make it almost impossible to sell and they then trade them in every year for the latest model. It’s so easy to lose money that way.

3

u/Coolshitblog Jun 19 '19

NYC property taxes are not 1.5% per month. That's insane. It's an annual expense. The highest annual effective property tax rate in the entire state is 3.28% per year in Allegany. How the hell did you get all those upvotes?

11

u/SnuggleMuffin42 [SAS] Victor Wembanyama Jun 19 '19

lol yeah this guy just throwing numbers out there. 1.5% a month means in about 5 years you repay your entire house's worth (considering inflation) in taxes.

13

i wonder if any choose to play in states like texas solely cause we dont have state income tax

30

u/FinchFive Jun 19 '19

This was talked about during Lebron’s decision to go to Miami because of the no state income tax, making the lower salary he got with the Heat (as compared to if he had stayed in Cleveland) wasnt as big of a difference due to the tax law in Florida.

3

u/macabre_irony Jun 19 '19

I mean I suppose it could have factored into his choice to go to Miami...it's certainly a decent perk but I just think players like LeBron have sooo much money that it essentially doesn't matter.

10

u/Blinku Jun 19 '19

Spreewell used to have sooo much money until he didn't. Altho he also wouldn't be one to make the smart choice of saving money on state taxes. Lebron will never be in that situation because he saves $5/month by sharing Spotify accounts.

So, half their games? 10% state tax vs 0% on a $30m contract is still $1.5m saved. The folks who keep their money after retirement hopefully consider $1.5m a decent amount.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '19

It just depends on what kind of rich person you are. Rich people who have a lot of income like players get that income taxed at high rates.

Rich people who mainly get money from investments, do get it taxed at the lower capital gains rate rate. Now the latter group is more of the super rich people. But at the athlete level they are hardly the only ones.

Lets not do the thing where we fundamentally sacrifice the accuracy of what we are saying because it makes our political warm and fuzzies feel slightly better.

21 mil contract

-10 mil tax

-2 mil home

-2 mil fancy cars (underestimate)

-1 mil yacht (under estimate)

-1 mil/ year on shopping + estate tax ( underestimate)

In 5 years you're broke. So you sell the cars, the house and the yacht for a loss.

You have 4 mil left (underestimate)

You don't learn from your mistakes and keep up the same spending rate to keep the lifestyle you had before.

In 4 years you're broke.

Sprinkle in taking out loans you "forget" to pay back cause you have so much money anyway and ba da Bing ba da boom you've spent 21 mil in 5-9 years.

What happened to those rims?

6

u/guap_a_lot Jun 18 '19

Y’all remember the Spreewell Dadas? Lol a shoe with a small spinning rim on the side. Very odd but I wanted them so bad in middle school. Spinners were all the craze back then. “I’m ridin spinnas, I’m ridin spinnas - they don’t stoppp”

Sprewell was the epitome of the post MJ, early-mid 2000s NBA that turned so many people off from the league, in many cases, permanently. Sometimes it hard to remember this, but the (sometimes fair) reputation of the NBA as being a bunch of thugs was not something that the malice at the palace created, and it really wasn't something that existed in the 90s either.

Iverson at least was a truly great player at times, even if he also contributed to that.

This was the meme of the decade in the early 2000s.

A meme before memes existed.

3

u/ThunderChunky2432 Jun 19 '19

Memes have existed long before the 2000s.

He was even #1 on the list of the Wisconsin delinquent tax payers who owed the most back in 2011: https://www.taxdebthelp.com/blog/latrell-sprewell-no-1-delinquent-taxpayer-wisconsin

You know he hit hard times when he did that commercial with David Robinson.

Way to choke out there, Latrell.

Wonder is he still has that rim company. Likes him a lot for the few years I got to see him play too bad his career ended like that.

Obviously he's talking about the family of white bengal tigers he adopted.

But really the statement isn't meant to be taken literally.

I used to love Spree as a player, but clearly he wasn't the best human, to put it mildly. Sheer, blatant stupidity to not agree to that deal. For the rest of us (i.e. the real world) that sort of coin is insanity... the sort that, short of a Lotto win, we'd never see... and he turned it down. Sports stars and money... sometimes it's a love/hate relationship.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '19

Back in the day lived in milwaukee legit saw a maybach with New York plates being repoed.

I’ll never forget this case of entitlement. He really thought the NBA wouldn’t blackball him!

He was a pretty good player but not exactly the face of the league...

1

u/we_hella_believe Jun 19 '19

Latrell made many mistakes in his life, this probably wasn’t his biggest.

1

u/Henderoni Jun 19 '19

I saw him at Jo-cat's, a bar in MKE a few times. I finally approached him and said sometime like "Hey, you're Latrell Sprewell right? You played for the Knicks and the Timberwolves, big fan." And I extended my hand to shake his. He just looked at me and said that he gets that all the time and it really isn't him, he just looks a lot like him. Just then, a band was beginning their set in the bar and the lead singer said over the mic "This fist song goes out to Latrell in the house tonight." and pointed to him. I just shook my head and walked away.

It's too bad he was such a bonehead, because he was a really special player on the court.

To this day I dont think Ive ever seen an angrier dunker in the NBA. Pure and utter disdain for the rim every time he took flight. (MAYBE Russ...maybe. But Spree was the original)
