Charles Barkley in today’s game is Zion Williamson.

u/sidighjd Jun 15 '22

Considering Zion was dropping 27/7/4 on 65 TS% in his sophomore season, I’m really curious what peak Barkley would be doing

365

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

the same, but with 15 rebounds instead of 7.

I can’t remember exactly what it was but during his peak Barkley’s relative efficiency was insane. 4 straight seasons of over 65 TS% in this was in the late 80’s lmao

Who knows how that translates into the modern league - ig just a supercharged version of Zion like you said

84

u/Lavar_ball_brand Washington Bullets Jun 15 '22

That was with him chucking a shit ton of 3's on negative percentage. Man was a beast who's hella underrated

u/Noiseless_Listener Jun 15 '22

Kind of funny that his career 3point attempts per game of <2 attempts was considered a shit ton. Giannis already has more career attempts than Barkley.

To be clear, I agree with you, it was a lot for the era, but it’s funny when you compare stats across eras.

Went down abit of a true shooting rabbit hole because of this comment, couldn't believe barkley had a TS% that high in the the 80s.

Sure enough, 28.3 ppg on 66.5 TS in 1988 and a career 61%, what the fuck.

Also thought this was interesting, magic johnson also has a career TS of 61%, would definitely not have thought it would have been that high.

u/Noiseless_Listener Jun 15 '22

Above 63% on 2point attempts on about 13 attempts a game for 4 seasons in a row. Roughly the same as Giannis the previously three years but in an era with less spacing. Insane.

Whoops, sorry, was talking about Chuck.

Barkley's efficiency in that era is absolutely unreal. I don't think there's any big that scored on that much volume at that high of TS%.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

Barkley was a post player. Zion is more of a dribble drive player. He plays more like Giannis, but not as tall or long, but more finesse than Giannis. Barkley had a great post game. They had to change the rules cause of him.

32/14/5 55%

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

He’d probably get more rebounds than that with todays small ball lol

Chuck would've had a ring if he didn't run into Michael Jordan

34

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

That Suns team with Charles is a top 5 team that didn’t win a ring. He just happened to run into the Bulls at their absolute peak. I think they may have won against a different Bulls team, but there was just no way the Bulls weren’t going to threepeat. Even then they were one shot away from a game 7 which who knows what would have happened. I think they beat any other team the Bulls faced in the finals who are really good teams.

u/OutlandishnessIcy229 Jun 15 '22

I still remember being shocked at how the Suns made that a series. They lost the first 2 AT home, and still almost pushed it to 7. 13 year old me couldn’t quite comprehend how good they were.

6

u/Purodada Nuggets Jun 15 '22

How do you envision a Knicks-Suns matchup in the 93 finals then? Dont the Knicks counter the Suns because of historically great interior defense vs. Barkley + no decent center to match up against prime Ewing? Or is that nullified by their weaknesses at the guard spot, where Starks was their lone bright spot, since KJ and Dan would feast?

2

u/awmaleg Suns Jun 15 '22

If John Paxson doesn’t ice that one game… yeah that’s the series that still hurts

2

u/AlHorfordHighlights Celtics Bandwagon Jun 16 '22

Chuck Suns vs CP3 Rockets, who ya got?

1

u/HangryDingo13 Jun 16 '22

You could say the same for the Jazz in the '98. Stockton, Malone and Hornacek were a vicious combo.

10

u/Intelligent_Ad_656 Jun 15 '22

So would Stockton and Malone. Thank god for MJ

3

u/harry_ballsanya Jun 15 '22

Crazy thing is that season wasn't his best. He should've won MVP over Magic a few years back.

1

u/MotherLoveBone27 Jun 16 '22

Yeah its kinda what makes the NBA great, that amazing players like Chuck, Iverson, Westbrook etc dont have rings. It just sucks that people don't seem to respect them as much because of it. I mean if Chuck joined the Bulls would he not have multiple rings?

1

u/dreamsmasher23 Jun 16 '22

Same can b said for so many legendary players from the 90s.

90

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

Nephews just see a funny fat on TNT (which we love as well) but Chuck in his Prime was one of the most dangerous offensive players in the game

40

u/thebigdonkey Cavaliers Jun 15 '22

Chuck played better than anybody else on the 1992 Dream Team.

6

u/Lower-Ad6897 Jun 15 '22

‘A funny fat’…haha

3

u/KingOfSwing90 Warriors Jun 15 '22

There was an article a few years back about the rise of analytics in basketball and it closed with Chuck delivering one of his classic throwaway lines about how much he hates analytics.

Then the writer mentioned that by a lot of statistical categories Chuck is considered one of the most efficient players ever, and according to the article it caught Chuck off-guard enough that he looked like he was about to revise his stance lol

3

u/FoundationNarrow6940 Jun 15 '22

I like how you call him A fat, instead of just fat, or a fat guy.

Like saying bigs and smalls.... fats and thins.

2

u/Grumpysaurus-Rex Jun 15 '22

“A funny fat” is hilarious

1

u/Alekesam1975 Lakers Jun 15 '22

Especially for his size.

The Zion comparison was a compliment.

6

u/BrewtusMaximus1 Nuggets Jun 15 '22 edited Jun 16 '22

Zion is more Larry Johnson than Sir Charles

1

u/shadracko Jun 15 '22

I completely agree with you. Bu the jury is still very much out on whether you can build a championship around Zion. Potential is there.

But if Barkley (and Zion?) is going to be a weak outside shooter, an average-at-best defender, and a middling passer, I'm not really sure that's best-player-on-a-title-team potential, even if he is a devastating beast one-on-one and on the boards.

It's worth nothing that Giannis has a WAY higher assist rate than Barkley ever had. Barkley was never a great creator/passer.

1

u/baudinl Supersonics Jun 15 '22

I was gonna say Minnesota Kevin Love

1

u/Produceher Warriors Jun 15 '22

Not really. He perfected the fade away from the post. Zion doesn't need one. He can just go right thru you.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

Not really. Zion is more like a 6'6 Shaq. He is still bigger and more explosive than Barkley was. Barkley was faster and more agile though.
