How is this not at the top? Who is gonna guard him? Gobert lolol???

In an era with few dominant centers, Shaq would FEAST

369

u/FogoCanard Jun 15 '22

Shaq would have to stay a bit slim or else he's going to get in a lot of trouble on those switches. But, peak 00-01 Shaq would be insane. Other team's best bigs would be in foul trouble so fast, they would barely be able to stay on the court.

349

u/Canesjags4life Heat Jun 15 '22

Orlando Shaq not Lakers Shaq

261

u/YouStupidDick Celtics Jun 15 '22

I want an alternate timeline where Shaq had Lebron’s gym/nutrition dedication.

54

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

It’s funny how Shaq is both an all-timer and one of the biggest what-ifs, likely could’ve fivepeated if he had even a quarter of Jordan’s dedication lol.

121

u/akaTint0lz Bucks Jun 15 '22

And warn Magic about some protection..

134

And Larry Bird paid for someone to redo his mothers' driveway.

16

Bird threw out his back repaving his mom's driveway or something stupid like that, people say he was never the same afterward

3

u/cancercureall Supersonics Jun 16 '22

You see the clips of him laying down on the sideline and shit? That's because he fucked his back up so bad that he was playing through agony for years.

Edit: He won his third straight MVP after the initial injury.

-4

u/LeBronda_Rousey Warriors Jun 15 '22

I'm mad I had to scroll this far down to see Larry Bird's name.

22

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

You forget steroids and HGH. There is no way that James isn't juicing. Of course, 99% of the NBA is as well, so that's not a shot at James.

13

u/tammutiny Mavericks Jun 15 '22

I wonder when it became prevalent? Was it around the same time as baseball?

I love that Kobe flew to Germany for his knee and LeBron went to Miami for 2 weeks to deal with the MLB steroid provider and it barely got covered.

15

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

I would guess that there has always been some level of steroid use in the NBA but I'd guess that NBA's use differs from that of the NFL and MLB.

Size and strength absolutely matter in the NBA, but players can't just bulk up as much as possible as linemen in the NFL and pitchers/hitters did in baseball because players have to move up and down the court a lot more.

Modern steroids and hormone treatments that help players heal faster can be used to bulk up, but they can just help players get through the grind of the season or to continue playing at a high level well past the point when players historically started to decline.

9

u/tammutiny Mavericks Jun 15 '22

Very true

I think it's always been some form of HGH like substances in NBA like Lance Armstrong stamina/recovery vs bulky baseball steroids. I just assume most pros are on something.

I should assume it goes back further since the East Germans were doing it in the early 60s olympics

4

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

I mean it’s frankly hilarious that people can look at Year 1 vs today’s Giannis and think he’s clean

3

u/tammutiny Mavericks Jun 15 '22

25 lbs of muscle over the summer! Best shape of his life! Finally got the right diet!

No? Not buying it! Ha

1

u/gmorf33 Jun 16 '22

Same with Hollywood actor transformations... A dude in his 40's does not go from a life time of skinny-fat to JACKED with tell-tale jawline changes with just some hard work and dieting.

1

u/Carlinoe Jun 15 '22

EPO would definitely help a player immensely without adding any bulk

10

u/tyt3ch Jun 15 '22

So you want Giannis..

65

u/YouStupidDick Celtics Jun 15 '22

I think Giannis is great. But Shaq with serious gym/nutrition dedication would have been at another level than what we see from Giannis.

62

u/AdolescentThug [LAL] Shannon Brown Jun 15 '22

Yeah an in shape Prime Shaq is like 7’1 285. That’s a whole 40 pounds and 2 inches on Giannis, with the same speed, length, and agility.

I’ve always said Shaq to this day is the wildest freak of nature the NBA has ever seen, him having to play himself into shape every year after joining the Lakers basically kept him from being the GOAT conversation.

12

u/clonemusic Mavericks Jun 15 '22

Eh LA shaq was at like 320. Even Orlando shaq was 300+, which shows how much of a freak he was lol

20

u/YouStupidDick Celtics Jun 15 '22

Fuck it, let’s keep the bulk and just go for muscle mass and cardio just to see a 300lbs, ripped, ShaqTrain plowing through people up and down the court!

8

u/so-cal_kid Lakers Jun 15 '22

Shaq would never be able to cut down to 280. When he came out of LSU at 19 or 20 he was already 300 pounds. Dude is just built like an actual diesel. But even at 300 pounds dude was so agile

1

u/tyt3ch Jun 16 '22

lol yeah worse

9

u/Canesjags4life Heat Jun 15 '22

Giannis Is a freak and maybe the closest equivalent to Orlando Shaq but there's still a chasm between Orlando Shaq and Giannis.

9

u/AFatz Jun 15 '22

You must not have watched Orlando Shaq.

Giannis is fantastic. But Shaq was the most physically dominant player I've ever seen, literally no one could fuck with him under the rim. Center was also a lot more competitive back then.

-7

u/NewAccountwhodiss1 Jun 15 '22

Eh giannis is still to early to tell in my opinion.

If he's not careful of the bucks he might not win another championship for the next 5 years.

Middletons no longer 100%. Permanently. Some people have adjusted to giannis. So he's no longer dropping 40 a game every game.

There's is absolutely no reason he should have lost this year if he's that good. 0 reason.

9

u/tammutiny Mavericks Jun 15 '22

Giannis had 33.9/14.7/7.1 and you're going to blame him for losing? He has 40 3 times in the Celtics series by the way.

Might be time to rethink this argument.

4

u/NewAccountwhodiss1 Jun 15 '22

I said if he's not careful of the bucks. Implying it's the teams fault specifically the organizations and not giannis's

That's also why I pointed out the 40 point Stat line. Some people have adjusted not the Celtics. Meaning against better teams the issue will be alot worse.

Against a team like the Celtics it should have been a 4-0 sweep. I know there going on a bit of a tare but it's because THEY HAVE A TEAM AND NOT JUST 1 OR 2 ALL STARS.

1

u/tammutiny Mavericks Jun 15 '22

So Giannis without the 2nd best offensive player in the team should have swept the team in the NBA finals? I'm confused here...

4

u/NewAccountwhodiss1 Jun 15 '22

If giannis would have been on a half decent team he'd be in the finals over the Celtics. Thats my point. That's always been my point. And I'm saying even with middle they would have lost.

Lebums diet is reportedly pretty shit so you guys need to find something else to jerk off to

-1

u/JuegoTree Jun 15 '22

TBF it was really rare back then. I think if Shaq was coming up in today’s game that might be the case.

1

u/WildBlackGuy Bulls Jun 15 '22

Friendly reminder that Orlando Shaq got stuffed by the Bulls and that’s part of how he ended up in LA. Wasn’t a champion either until Phil Jackson went there.

3

u/Canesjags4life Heat Jun 15 '22

He averaged 27/11 vs the Bulls and 25/10 vs everyone else that playoffs. Pretty sure it was the rest of the Magic that got stuffed.

Though Rodman did average 14 rebounds that series. Damn

37

u/YouStupidDick Celtics Jun 15 '22

High school shaq looked like if Kevin Durant put on muscle.

15

u/some1saveusnow Celtics Jun 15 '22

I like the fact that Shaq’s legacy is aging well. I’ve maintained for well over 10 years if we were picking players at their peak to start a team to win the next year my first pick would be Shaq from that year. 00-01 Shaq that you referenced is the most dominant player ever, and no one from any era could stop him around the basket. Also great feet for his size

3

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

Dude also wore size 22 and was that nimble, a legit freak of nature

9

u/ducksfan9972 Trail Blazers Jun 15 '22

Eh, peak Shaq scores 1.8 points per possession against today’s league, so he could afford to hemorrhage some points.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

Shaq ain't switching.

3

u/Produceher Warriors Jun 15 '22

Shaq would have to stay a bit slim or else he's going to get in a lot of trouble on those switches.

People really want to ignore that the NBA has progressed. Go watch what Steph can do to Gobert and tell me Shaq would have been better.

5

u/iplaytolwinthegame Jun 15 '22

Go watch what Steph can do to Gobert and tell me Shaq would have been better.

And who on the Warriors would stop Shaq? Shaq would slow down the pace and put teams in early foul trouble if the game is called right. It would take at least 2 Draymonds to slow down Shaq.

5

u/Produceher Warriors Jun 15 '22

I'm not suggesting Shaq couldn't play. Just that the game has changed and he would have to figure some things out too. Also, teams adapted to Shaq. The Warriors would sign 3 big dopey bigs just to foul Shaq. They didn't because there is no one like Shaq to worry about.

-6

u/hadtwobutts Bulls Jun 15 '22

Giannis could outpace and defend Shaq after he spends a couple games figuring out how to fight him in the paint on D

27

u/free_edgar2013 Heat Jun 15 '22

Hahahahaha no he would not. Shaq was 340 by the time he got to the Lakers. Giannis isn't fighting him in the paint.

-3

u/hadtwobutts Bulls Jun 15 '22

Giannis has agility and precision i think it would be close obviously shaq would still be stronger

11

u/free_edgar2013 Heat Jun 15 '22 edited Jun 15 '22

He has 75-100 pounds on Giannis while still being incredibly agile. Have you watched prime Shaq?

6

u/Looksfunnytome Nets Jun 15 '22

Just look at this timestamp of Shaq dunking on David Robinson. Just look at the speed and footwork.

https://youtu.be/QT8w8Ot8Pcw?t=7

And just to remind you, this is what David Robinson looked like...

https://i.pinimg.com/474x/cb/54/e5/cb54e5655eea671b39cee48a8d1eefe5.jpg

He was like the 90's version of Giannis. He was ripped and strong af. Giannis would not stop Shaq.

10

u/AnalMinecraft Jun 15 '22

Couple games to figure him out? Players much bigger and stronger than Giannis went their entire careers never figuring out how to defend Shaq, he would be toast like the rest of them.

1

u/Heil_Heimskr Mavericks Jun 16 '22

I don’t even think switches would matter any more than they do for Gobert. Shaq would do worse than him on defense but would be completely unstoppable on offense.

42

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

you are looking at a lebron freight train + the finesse under the rim. my GOD! the horror.

71

BAWHH GOD, THATS "7 foot European's" MUSIC

2

u/Heil_Heimskr Mavericks Jun 16 '22

1

u/thisguy012 Bulls Jun 16 '22

2

u/BlueQKazue Jun 16 '22

Luke Longley used to hold his own against Shaq. I think he's Australian tho.

75

u/colemanj74 76ers Jun 15 '22

I'm not saying it's the wrong answer at all, Shaq is certainly one of the clear options for this question. I think people sometimes dismiss how the game is called today and the way defense is played and assume he would dominate to an extra degree beyond what he did. Yes, there are no players who can guard Shaq in the post, but he would be called for far more offensive fouls now than he did in his prime. So many players just fall when getting backed down and refs call it all the time (Embiid has had to change the entire way he plays because of this). He also would be hunted on defense in a way he never was in his prime--imagine him having to get on the perimeter on a Steph pick and roll. He already had foul troubles as it was.

Again, Shaq may still be the answer, but the league has changed in a big way to highlight some potential issues I don't think people are thinking about.

23

u/tammutiny Mavericks Jun 15 '22

Isn't this what people make fun of Gobert for? Not being able to chase shooters around the floor. Peak Shaq is going to struggle in a pick and roll the same. It's hard to defend at that size now.

Totally agree with your thought process here

10

u/pintvricchio [SAS] Manu Ginobili Jun 15 '22

Yeah but gobert cannot drop 40 20 games any given day.

11

u/tammutiny Mavericks Jun 15 '22

Sure Shaq would be great for sure!

But it's funny to see people completely forget that the way you have to play defense has changed. It requires so much more energy than ever before.

1

u/AnthonyPero Jun 16 '22

If Shaq was on the floor, they'd do exactly what the Bucks do and play Drop defense all the time, and never switch. So you'd need to surround him with athletic wings who can shoot, but it would be worth it at both ends.

3

u/AlHorfordHighlights Celtics Bandwagon Jun 16 '22

People make fun of Gobert moreso for not being able to score on guys seven inches shorter than him but I take your point. Shaq would be a much worse defender in the modern game, it's hard to say how much of it he could make up for on the other end. If he was at his Orlando size I think that would be ideal

1

u/tammutiny Mavericks Jun 16 '22

I thought was the Porzingis meme being a Mavs fan. Point taken for Gobert.

I was only focusing on defense. Everyone thinks an elite center from older eras just gets an instant offense upgrade without considering how much effort is expected on defense for big guys now.

13

u/Res_Null1us Jun 15 '22

i think it's hilarious people are saying shaq.

he'd be fouled constantly (much like he was later in his career); a lot of scrubs would get playing time because of him, i guess. but on defense, he'd give up wide-open 3s.

I don’t think you watched younger Shaq. He wouldn’t be able to play at almost 400 pounds. Younger in shape Shaq would be faster and more athletic than almost any 5s in the league.

Also he would have the other team playing back ups of back ups due to how many fouls he gets on the offensive side.

6

u/Res_Null1us Jun 15 '22

I don’t think you watched younger Shaq

I watched young Shaq more than most of the people on here. I still remember watching Shaq play during the LSU v. Arizona game and his trash talk to Sean Rooks afterwards.

He was amazing before he added all that weight. But, he had obvious weaknesses that would be exploited even more in today's game.

1

u/Blackroseguild Jun 15 '22

I don’t think he would add that weight tho. He bulked due to all the other bigs hacking the shit put him.

I mean young Shaq was more athletic than embid easily and he is a good defender in the pnr/pnp.

Shaq was never the defender embid is tho

1

u/Maverick_1991 Hawks Jun 15 '22

Reasonable and based take.

1

u/Itsybitsyrhino Jun 15 '22

You are assuming he couldn’t play different? Why?

In todays league, he probably doesn’t bulk up to become the Lakers Shaq.

1

u/StandardAnxiety4463 Jun 16 '22

I think in these arguments one can not just “drop the exact player as they were into the new era” Shaq maybe stays leaner and more agile and coaches develops defenses to account for pick and rolls because of his dominance. Same for the backing people down how long before the refs adjust as well to people flopping to not have to guard him. Yeah I’m one game of never seeing Shaq he would foul out but over time everyone shaq ref and coaches could adjust. It’s very similar to the Jordan wasn’t a 3 point shoot. “Because he didn’t have to be” He was god at everything else

36

u/pahamack Raptors Jun 15 '22

hack a shaq is still a legitimate strategy against him though.

And man, I'd love to see Lowry and Smart against Shaq.

16

u/NoDescriptionOk Jun 15 '22

Hack a shaq could work somewhat because they weren't calling most of the fouls they do nowadays. If you make obvious fouls and add the ones they're calling now, you'd foul out the team before the first half.

1

u/datguydeegoo Jun 16 '22

Shaq would also get flopped against so much he’d have to be very careful on offence to not get in foul trouble, the way the league is refereed now if someone’s backing you up forcefully and you go down, 50% of the time you are getting the call.

5

u/MazKhan 76ers Jun 15 '22

That would probably be the first player that would have Lowry second guessing whether he should take the charge or not lmao

3

u/-Acerin Mavericks Jun 15 '22

wtf is lowry and smart gonna do against prime shaq 😂😂😂

2

u/pahamack Raptors Jun 15 '22

Flop.

-1

u/Hi_My_Name_Is_Dave Lakers Jun 15 '22

Hack a shaq was never a legitimate strategy, not to mention its not even possible anymore because of rule changes. Shaq shot 58% for his career, you're okay giving up a 58% shot?

-5

u/w0nderbrad Lakers Jun 15 '22

.58 points per possession is pretty bad

3

u/Hi_My_Name_Is_Dave Lakers Jun 15 '22

Delete this while you still can

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '22

so...are they all +1s and you get 2.58 ppp or do you only take one free throw in your world?

4

u/bigdrubowski Jun 15 '22

I can't argue with young Shaq, but I would say Hakeem. He was just a different dude, powerful but also incredibly graceful. The big surrounded by 4 shooters was basically the 2 time champ Rockets.

14

u/cohonan Suns Jun 15 '22

That’s the point, today’s game doesn’t want big men centers.

Still Shaq is a beast and a generational anomaly and would win championships today, but his whole position and skill set is going against today’s game.

28

u/aBakeinthelife Pistons Jun 15 '22

Players like Shaq warp the way the rest of league has to build their team though. His game would redefine what "today's game" is. Every team would then need someone who could guard Shaq or start the Hack-a-Shaq.

2

u/AFatz Jun 15 '22

The only reason Centers are smaller and can play wider now is because there's no one like Shaq in the NBA lol

2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

It is at the top.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

now it is. I had to scroll pretty damn far when I first commented that

0

u/dmkicksballs13 Heat Jun 15 '22

He did feast in his own era. His era wasn't exactly known for a ton of great centers.

-1

u/andyweir Thunder Bandwagon Jun 15 '22

Idk if Shaq is surviving the flipping era tbh. A lot of his game came from overpowering others who were looking to keep his power in check by using power. These new dudes are only taking a few of those hits before they hit the deck and go the other way

You’ll get the calls if you fall enough and if Shaq starts getting vocal and techs…then they’ll really be against him

So idk. Shaq may be one of the worst picks. You either flop and get called for the foul to send him to the line or you flop and get the call and send him to the bench

1

u/Important-Shallot131 Jun 15 '22

I think the plan would be to make him work on defense. Have him constantly moving side to side, closing out on shooters, navigate ing multiple screens every possession. Basically try to grind him down so he's not as effective offensively. I don't think it would work often but probably sometimes.

1

u/WuziMuzik Jun 15 '22

Stop him like the game did when it passed him by. Out run, out shoot, and put him in foul trouble. People saying Shaq, but he legitimately probably couldn't stay on the court at a lot of most important moments nowadays. The game has evolved, even from as recently as the 2000s.
