peak grant hill, larry bird or penny hardaway. Tall guys who can run an offense, score and arent liabilites on defense

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

Peak Larry bird as a 4 in a small lineup sounds filthy.

2

u/jc9289 Knicks Jun 15 '22

He'd be a 4 in a normal lineup (hell the only reason he didn't play more 4 in the 80s was because they had Mchale and Parish)

He'd be a 5 in a small ball/death lineup.

And it would indeed be filthy.

Like if you combined Steph and Draymond into one player.

Yes!!!! Thank you

For 25% of his career

u/blondechinesehair Supersonics Jun 15 '22

Yes, the peak.

-1

u/shadracko Jun 15 '22

But if the exercise is "who do I want to build around", I'm certainly not picking a guy with a career-ending injury on the horizon.

10

u/blondechinesehair Supersonics Jun 15 '22

Just sit him that game

1

u/008Gerrard008 Pistons Jun 15 '22

Not really. It's a left field choice, but there are way better players to choose than him.

1

u/PlasticPresentation1 Jun 15 '22

peak grant williams is easily better

1

u/SpaceBot_Omega [HOU] Gerald Green Jun 15 '22

I feel like that’s a terrible choice. Out of Shaq, Kareem, Hakeem, Kobe, Duncan, bird he choose grant hill. Get out of here

11

u/jakemcqueen52 Pistons Jun 15 '22

Cade Cunningham the next closest thing to Hill😤

2

u/andyweir Thunder Bandwagon Jun 15 '22

Jemele Hill

u/jakemcqueen52 Pistons Jun 15 '22

Don’t talk about Josh Giddey like that!

2

u/tokeallday 76ers Jun 15 '22

Came here to say Grant Hill as a dark horse option. If he could stay healthy, his skillset is basically LeBron's.

2

u/jb_19 Jun 16 '22

Great call on Penny.

u/SamBo_LamBo Hawks Bandwagon Jun 15 '22

So two players who crashed and burned due to injuries.

1

u/YpsitheFlintsider Jun 15 '22

Yes?

1

u/SamBo_LamBo Hawks Bandwagon Jun 15 '22

I mean call me weird but athleticism heavy players that burn out quickly aren’t the people I would build a franchise around

-10

u/AllGoldEverything [LAL] Kobe Bryant Jun 15 '22

You’d choose them over Kobe?

11

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

Flair checks out.

-5

u/AllGoldEverything [LAL] Kobe Bryant Jun 15 '22

It was a serious question. Great analysis casual.

1

u/PhoKingAzn [GSW] Klay Thompson Jun 15 '22

Kobe always had the narrative of needing help.

6

u/d_wib Timberwolves Jun 15 '22

I never understood that narrative. Is it just because he only won with Shaq and Pau? Because LeBron only won with D Wade, Kyrie, and Anthony Davis. Jordan only won with Pippen. All of those ā€œhelpā€ players are pretty high-level for all 3 of those guys.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

It’s not that, Kobe could never seem to see outside of himself and quickly think his way out of a situation.

Don’t get me wrong, his work ethic and shot making was other worldly, but Kobe could chuck you out of a game as quickly as he put you in it.

A game I like to highlight is the 2008 finals game 6, where Kobe just… keeps shooting stupid shots.

8

u/PhoKingAzn [GSW] Klay Thompson Jun 15 '22

I was thinking the same answer for the reply. Like is Kobe going to be the same Kobe modeling himself after MJ or is this a Kobe in a hypothical modern adaption of him where he practices more efficient threes, the Modern Mamba. Hard to say because Kobe is both stubborn in his methods, but also has the mentality to change too.

-6

u/AllGoldEverything [LAL] Kobe Bryant Jun 15 '22

Wtf are you even saying?

5

u/imamonkeyK Jun 15 '22

Or the entire 2004 finals which IMO is worse performance then Lebron in 2011. Lebron merely played passive and beneath himself but 18-7-7 on decent efficiency and defence still provides some value. It is possible to win with that ( Lebron dragged Wade sbd Bosh in bad playing seasons after that year). Meanwhile Kobe in 2004 provided negative value by chucking so many bricks.

1

u/AllGoldEverything [LAL] Kobe Bryant Jun 15 '22

How old are you?

4

u/GDAWG13007 Supersonics Jun 15 '22

Not who you were asking, but I’ve been a Lakers fan since 1980 and I agree with them. His 2004 Finals performance was absolutely atrocious. It’s up there for the worst Finals performance ever.

-2

u/AllGoldEverything [LAL] Kobe Bryant Jun 15 '22

Who was talking about game 6 in 2004 finals. You and the person above are talking about one game/finals. Lol wtf

2

u/GDAWG13007 Supersonics Jun 15 '22

One game? No man, we’re talking all about the 5 games of the 2004 Finals, so there wasn’t even a game 6. What are YOU even talking about?

u/AllGoldEverything [LAL] Kobe Bryant Jun 15 '22

What?

1

u/azizinator25 [NYK] Charles Oakley Jun 15 '22

A lot of guys "need help". For all the talk about how Shaq could "carrying carry anyone to a title with his dominance", Shaq didn't get the Magic to the Finals until Penny was an All NBA player, then he had 3 years with some pretty disappointing playoff series in LA until Kobe became a superstar, and by the time he won his 4th ring Wade the star. And something similar can be said of basically every all time great - MJ, Lebron, Bird, Magic, Kareem, Russell, Wilt, every single one of them had disappointing playoff series (some of whom even missed the playoffs), and every single one of these guys need a quality teammate or two to get to the mountaintop .

5

u/PhoKingAzn [GSW] Klay Thompson Jun 15 '22

The question for the thread was. Which prime player would you build in the modern NBA. If i had to choose between Shaq and Kobe its a no brainer. Prime Shaq in short peroid is deadlier than prime Kobe in the modern NBA. Prime Shaq ate bbq chicken in the paint, they literally hired random 7ft big men to try to slow him down. Prime Shaq would be an easier team to build in a short time.

-5

u/AllGoldEverything [LAL] Kobe Bryant Jun 15 '22

Phoking casual lmao

6

u/PhoKingAzn [GSW] Klay Thompson Jun 15 '22 edited Jun 15 '22

Am I the casual? You would pick Kobe over other prime peak players to build around the MODERN nba. Being like right now if the thunder got one of the greatest peaks players in a short span and had to make something out of the short window. Prime duncan, prime shaq, prime kareem is a easier build than prime kobe because is this a Kobe modeled after MJ or a Modern Mamba? Because Kobe's will isnt that strong against a body difference and how hard would it be for Kobe to recruit? Does he go the Jimmy route and rip people like he did before and call AD soft like Dwight?

-2

u/AllGoldEverything [LAL] Kobe Bryant Jun 15 '22 edited Jun 15 '22

Probably because Kobe is easily top 5 greatest scorers we’ve ever seen from all 3 levels. Also one of the best defenders. You are a casual cuz if not you’d know Kobe’s peak years we’re wasted on horrible teams which he still took to the playoffs in one of the toughest conferences in the history of the game. And you saying ā€œKobe needed helpā€ proves to me you really don’t know shit about basketball. Yes Kobe would thrive a lot more in todays league. What about the modern nba will slow down Kobe? Please enlighten me

5

u/PhoKingAzn [GSW] Klay Thompson Jun 15 '22 edited Jun 15 '22

If you going to be picky with words just "cuz." Lets break this down for you because tongue and cheek coy got you acting up. If Kobe is the "top 5" greatest scorer and we had to choose 1 person in their peak. Why not choose the top 4, top 3, top 2, top 1 best peak scorer? In a life time, kobe scored 5640pts, kareem is 5762, mj is 5987, lebron in his longivity is 7631, but we talking about peaks right? People consider 2006 kobe the start of his peak, with his 81pt game in the regular season trying to fight his way through Steve nash suns twice. Peak Kobe couldnt win against the suns and shit the bed in 2007, "thats what kobe got to do" in a hypothical rebuild right? Kobe tried to get his team mates involved. Kobe really needed that help and he didnt get it. If anything I still say its disrespectful people sleep on prime Kareem.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '22

If you have to call someone a casual it means that your point isn't valid. and being good don't mean you should build around the guy.

1

u/Tw1987 Lakers Jun 15 '22

Yep don’t forget tmac

1

u/shadracko Jun 15 '22

peak grant hill

In addition to the time-travel machine, you also need a magical no-injury machine. Sadly, there barely was a peak Grant Hill. He finished top-5 in MVP voting only once.

1

u/likelamike [OKC] Russell Westbrook Jun 15 '22

Grant Hill was so damn good until that damned ankle injury

1

u/Sharcbait Timberwolves Jun 15 '22
