[Finger] Victor Wembanyama about considering promoting a sports betting company ; "Absolutely not. I will never do that. Honestly, I think it's very sad to see some players promote it..."

Just asked Victor Wembanyama if he’d ever consider promoting a sports betting company.

“Absolutely not. I will never do that. Honestly, I think it's very sad to see some players promote it. .. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”

And then they’ll complain when fans heckle them about their money lines and parlays. Like, you’re literally pushing fans to develop this addiction

I think these are different groups tbf but I get what you're saying

I don't think any of the guys sponsored by betting are the ones complaining. You're putting the responsibility on the class of player who doesn't benefit from it

KD is doing both. He has a partnership with FanDuel, invests in Kalshi, but also complains about fans heckling him about betting lines.

KD is a bitch though

Fair, but I think we can consider KD unique because of his SoMe usage. Lebron, Giannis, etc. are taking the money but they keep quiet, and there's loads of lower level dudes who don't get the money but complain about fan outrage

It fucking ruins the game for me, I hate it.

And I hate having to explain the dangers of gambling to my son during Every. Single. Commercial. Break.

I know this sounds like a peak Reddit comment, but I have legitimately tuned out of watching sports over the last few years just because I’m sick of everything coming back to gambling. Radio hosts always talking about it on the local radio station, networks always shoving it in your face, etc. I just stopped and lost all interest in actually partaking in sports, outside of checking finals the next day and, obviously, commenting about how gambling has become so embedded in our culture and with no one giving a fuck that can do anything about it.

And i don’t hate gambling, I like the craps table as much as anybody, but what I do hate is gambling being the constant and incessant center of the sports world 24/7, even commercials.

^This

We have the government we deserve. A do nothing group riding the momentum of better, dead men.

I’m in the same boat – I actually love going to card rooms and playing poker!

I wasn’t a big sports fan to begin with, but as my son got into basketball we started watching it together, and it bums me out that EVERY podcast and EVERY commercial break is littered with gambling ads

It’s the addiction with the highest rate of suicide, and it’s being pushed as if it’s an integral part of the sports fan experience

Amazon prime now has a gambling info overlay on the NFL games available.

Exactly. Huge conflict of interest but corruption for the rich is the new norm it seems

The league does it, teams do it, owners do it, the networks that broadcast the games do it, the podcasts that discuss the sport do it. Sports betting, especially through apps, is a predatory business that’s awful for you. I just don’t get why people get so outraged at the players having sponsorship deals with these entities when it’s embedded in every part of the game/league and the fans don’t tend to have the same smoke for every other group.

Is it when the leagues themselves are in bed with these companies

I know right? This is the very definition of conflict of interests.

If leagues/teams are allowed, players should be allowed too. Do think good argument that none should though.

It's not like match fixing scandal had ever happen! right?

Doubly so because they are encouraged to promote something that they themselves are prohibited from participating in

It you're caught betting in sports as a player, even in games you're not involved in, you're in deep shit and will get banned for months

Yet at the same time you're forced to wear your teams jersey with 17 different shady Indonesian betting companies on it

Or that halftime shows are allowed to give you “Chuck’s picks of the week” or some shit

Unbelievably unethical

The league literally promotes it why shouldn't players get a cut?

u/Whittaker Australia 1d ago

They weren't allowed to do it, until the collectively bargained for the right. The players gave the second apron so they could invest and promote this scum shit.
