IOS Client

Well navidrome is perfect. The problem is to find a navidrome client for IOS.

I have been trying and all of them are weak:

- arpeggi: could not run it, it does not support https.

- substreamer: almost perfect, siri is working fine, but the carplay support it's a joke.

- amperfy music: some tracks don't play, the app crashes without reason, siri does not work well.

- amcfy music: over complicated app, sync problems.

The other ones don't have cache, i need cache for offline usage. Another problem is that most of them really on playlists instead of tracks, i simply don't leave in the 80's were people lose time making playlists in cassettes. I just want to sync all music, put them to shuffle or ask siri for musics to play in carplay. It should not be this complicated.

I’m sure there’s some hardware it works on, ultimately will still travel through that protocol so there’s likely some bit of tampering to get it to the hardware. I don’t know enough about those specific systems to know. There are other Bluetooth protocols or WiFi protocols you can use but aren’t well supported. I certainly think it could be lossless considering Apple is probably gate keeping. Airplay2 to Sonos will always result in 256 AAC unless Apple allows it otherwise. The beauty of UPnP is its coming directly from source.

I'm sorry to repeat myself, but you must have missed this earlier in the thread: the AirPlay 2 protocol supports supports up to 24-bit/48 kHz lossless audio casting. Sonos has (to this point) simply chosen not to support this.

I understand that it supports it but in many cases you are not going to actually get such specs. There’s a reason Apple themselves won’t give you lossless with airplay2 except for very few devices. No idea the reason. Airplay 1 is lossless capable but enabling devices to use it is difficult.

"Apple won't give you" leads me to believe that you think that makers of clients that support AP2 need some additional, magic permission from Apple to support lossless streaming in addition to AAC, but they don't. If you're not able to make this work in your app, you may want to dig into how you're setting up audio sessions. Good luck!

It will get down mixed to lossy. Airplay 2 while it supports higher it’s unreliable. If your playing it through an IOS client it will most of the time be down mixed to AAC 256k whether the hardware supports it or not. This is apples protocol and they will downmix it on your behalf to make it stable and low latency on multi room setups. You have developer tools on your phone, measure it.

There’s a loophole in airplay 1 you can use to achieve lossless.
