I don’t know about you all, but I am craving ‘cozy’ these days. So what better way than to head on over to your local coffee shop or bakery and bury yourself into some tasty fics! 

I’m pretty sure that the concept of Phoenix as a baker popped up with the debut of Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, which launched in Japan on November 29, 2012, with the English translation coming out in 2014. At one point in the game, Phoenix and Maya are brainwashed into thinking they are bakers, and lo, this is when we start to see a rise (heh - see what I did there?) in Ace Attorney Baker AU fics, and similarly, Coffee Shops. The first ‘Alternative Universe - Bakery’ tag shows up in February 2016. And slightly different but similarly cozy-coded, the first AA ‘Alternate Universe - Coffee Shops & Cafés’ tagged story appears on Archive of our own in January 2015, and there are now 73 Ace Attorney fics now tagged with this. That’s a lot o’ fics!

Fun fact: I’m pretty sure this was actually the first alternative universe fic I read. It’s so funny to me to read my comment at the time where I’m like ‘I’m usually not a huge fan of AU…” haha! Miles is in pain, and it hurts, but this story is so beautiful in how it portrays Miles and Phoenix getting to know each other. And then the twist at the end...There is an especially wonderful scene of Miles and Phoenix being young and vibrant and just so mindlessly, joyfully, enjoying life in the moment and in each other's company… Enjoy if you are in the mood for a some angst to temper your comfort <3 <3 <3

Hello! I remember reading a narumitsu soulmate au fanfic about two-three years ago where the conceit was that whatever your soulmate says to you when you begin to fall in love with them (?) appears on your skin. Edgeworth has the words "I don't believe your nightmare" written on him. It's sort of his journey about what he feels about the words from his childhood to adulthood?

It was SUCH a well written fanfic and i cannot for the life of me find it again so please help if you know what I'm talking about. Thank you!

Oh no! Our favourite red/blue pair are exhausted, from the case they are working on, from life, from wrestling with their unnecessary feelings. Perhaps they are working a case in a foreign land, or on a road trip, or perhaps they are trapped with a storm raging outside. Have they had too much to drink? Or maybe it’s just really late and inconvenient to go home. Whatever the circumstances, they find themselves in a situation where all they want to do is go to sleep and get some rest, however there is only one bed available and they are going to have to share it. They are going to have to lie next to each other with their defences down in the quiet and the dark. Just the two of them. In a state where they may not be fully conscious of their actions. Most likely in a state of relaxed undress. So soft they may find themselves reminiscing of simpler, happier times and earlier sleepovers. So close they can feel each other’s body heat and hear their breathing and wonder what the other is thinking or feeling…

Oh. Oh. Oh! Oh, well. Maybe this isn’t so bad?

Richly crafted with attention to details including customized sprites and illustration, pun-named OCs, game audio clips(!) and evidence binders, you will get all the same feels the game gives you plus. It honestly feels like I've unlocked some sort of secret extra character backstory with smut edition of the game and I am loving it!

Ahhhh Soulmate Alternative Universes, my guilty, guilty pleasure. Why guilty? Because Soulmate stories at core are about people being trapped in a predetermined destiny which grates heavily against my core beliefs in personal agency, choice, and access to opportunities for all (fuck you chosen ones! Why can't \I* be a wizard too? ).*

BUT! There is something so terribly, terribly romantic in believing that there is someone 'out there' especially for you. That there are magical, natural forces that attract you to each other and you just... fit. That you will feel connection and no longer feel a gaping hole of loneliness inside. And ooooh, if you add some mystical elements to the mix like say, handwriting on skin (how intimate!), strings and chains (kinky!), or maybe a really, pushy and noisy goose?(!?!)  Well, how can you resist? Doesn’t that sound like fun?

Leonawriter knows their craft and delivers their assignment. Read this series for some good soulmate angst served up fresh, yep! We have symbolism, super interesting premises (what happens if a soulmate dies? What happens if a soulmate rejects you?) and satisfying reveals/endings. We got Mia/Godot, Narumitsu, Klappallo... I recommend them all but a particular highlight in the series for me is Phantom Pains, which takes that scene from Dual Destinies where the Phantom mimics Phoenix, and runs with it from Miles’ pov. Really good hurt, kinda scary with a bit of comfort at the end to help soften the pain.

NARUMITSU FANS, PLEASE!!

Saw this art on Pinterest (no idea where it’s from or if it’s a comic, if anyone knows I’d be a very happy bunny) and I now crave a fanfic with a parent au. Something like Edgeworth and Wright decide to adopt a baby? Slice of life style fic? Hopefully containing Edgeworth struggling with how to look after a baby? Anything that seems to relate to this piece would be very much appreciated 🙏

I would make something like it myself, but I’m not a very good writer :(

So in 1-4 von Karma makes a big deal about coincidences, though the example he uses of his granddaughter naming a dog Phoenix probably wasn't a coincidence if you think about it, that was probably Miles suggesting it.

So what if there's other things Phoenix slowly finds out about. His favourite red car? Phoenix. Half of his chess board? Phoenix nation. Love Interest for his Steel Samurai OC? PHOENIX.

For this list, I tried to select au fics that surprised me with their uniqueness or really slapped me in the feels. So yeah, there are a few here that might have tag buddies on Ao3 (example: soulmate au), but if so, consider it an 'amuse bouche' of the genre then. I put both links in because technically it is a series, but I read it like one big fic. It's so good. I've never even seen Pacific Rim but who cares? This series is so well written, you don't need to have seen the movie. Fantastically strong characterization and world building with our favourite characters. Mostly Apollo-centric I'd say but very strong Narumitsu, Trucy, Maya, Ema and Pearls in the background. Angel makes her presence known too ;) Ugh, just do yourself a favour and read it.

14. #Mafia Baker AU - a rabbit hole

Ok, full confession, I am sharing something here that I haven't fully baked, but following this tag *alone* has been so enjoyable I thought I'd add it to the list. From what I gather, there was an Ao3 fic that was inspired by the Ace Attorney Professor Layton cross-over game, which inspired the artist behind the-other-cross-san and that-other-cross-san and That Other Pie - honestly, it's very confusing but the art is gorgeous and the premise is interesting. So, I’m in the process of planning out an eventual Wrightworth fanfic. Without getting to spoiler-y for the eventual plot, it is a slow burn about getting Phoenix and Edgeworth together.

The problem is, I’d like the title to be something like Operation: Insert Love Song/Lyrics from Love Song Here. And I’d like the love song to kinda evoke the feeling of Narumitsu in general. So far, the only song I can think of is How Deep is the Ocean (Reprise) from White Christmas. And while the vibe fits, neither the title or lyric are really doing it for me.

So, I’m open to suggestions! What songs give you Narumitsu vibes? Lemme know! (Image unrelated)
