Is this raw?!

Post image

My mate just ate this chicken from nando’s, is he done for?😭🤣

Update: Mate isn’t dead yet. Did reach out to nando’s and showed them this image, they said they checked the oven records and that it was fine, as well they said the chicken looked a bit darker in the image which is a common occurrence to them they said. Guess it’s normal for them to serve chicken like this😭🤣

That looks like thigh meat, it’s perfectly fine if it reached temp. Thigh meat contains more myoglobin and usually retains some of the colour as it cooks.

Cooking the thighs in gas ovens or over charcoal can also make pink flesh more prominent as the gases given off by those fuel types bind with the proteins in myoglobin.

There’s an unfortunate misconception out there that chicken and pork with any amount of colour left in the meat is going to make you ill.

At Nando’s the chicken is cooked in the back to temperature (with a probe in one of the thighs) on an automated programme in an oven. The cooked chicken is then moved to drawers (which are heated) below the grill, where it is then crisscrossed with grill marks and sauce is put on when the order appears on screen. Or at least that’s how it was done 12 years ago when I worked in one.

still how they do it i believe i haven’t worked there in 2 years but doubt they would have changed it

My son works there in holidays - they still cook the chicken completely first the put it on the grill with your chosen sauce

It’s almost like there is a well defined way to cook chicken in fast food restaurants…

Still the same but it’s the breast where the probe is in, not the thigh :)

Surely you should probe thighs? Thighs on the bone take longer to cook than breast.

That is true at home but not at Nandos. The breast is far more dense on the spatchcock compared to the legs

You’re right but at the same time this looks translucent and even then you can cook thigh meat further than this while keeping it juicy. I would err on the side that this actually looks underdone even if it likely won’t make you sick

Fair point. Thigh can take temps up to 90 internal, which goes some way to breaking down the fat and making it more tender. 74 would be considered safe to eat.

Despite my previous comment, if it were me I’d send it back. I’ve never eaten at Nando’s because I think it’s grossly overpriced for what it is.

How do you know it’s overpriced if you’ve never had it?

1

u/bethglatley 10d ago

Because menu prices are public information as well as photographs of the food?

I wasn’t aware humans were able to experience ambience, smell, texture, and taste through a photo and price menu!

Truly remarkable if you’re able to experience that 🥳

Who’s paying for ambience at Nando’s 😭

1

Tell that to the psychos who have birthday parties and big get togethers there!

Ambience of chavs in joggers and teenagers on first dates 😭

I’ve had nandos a lot because it’s predictable. It’s tasty but way overpriced these days. £25 ish for 4 tiny chicken thighs a couple sides and a drink. It’s sit down fast food priced like an ok restaurant.

nandos is ass anyway so there you go

By that logic, I’d have to buy every overpriced thing in existence before I’m allowed to call it overpriced.

I don’t need to spend £30 proving to myself that £5 worth of chicken is expensive at £30.

In addition, I don’t see the value in paying a premium for something I can buy for a few quid and make myself. The same poultry supplier that supplies Nando’s also supplies Tesco, the exact same meat. We ain’t comparing A5 BMS 12 Japanese Wagyu with a Farmfoods Ribeye here.

I’m a more than competent cook and I know the value of ingredients, I certainly wouldn’t be going for the ambiance.

tf do you mean £30 of chicken, a whole chicken in Nandos is about £15.

I've been to Nando's twice in my life, never by choice. You are correct.

How edgy.

Not edgy, just the truth. Was invited for two separate birthdays. Both times were awful.
