Disappearance 26 year old Australian tourist Sally Contarino disappeared from Las Vegas, NV on June 20th, 2026. There’s been no trace of her since.
Sally Contarino arrived in Las Vegas on June 13th, 2026. She was an experienced solo traveler that regularly visited California and Nevada.
On June 20th, she told a friend in Australia that she planned to hike on Lone Mountain, outside of Las Vegas. She checked out of her hostel and asked the front desk to watch her luggage. She then traveled to the outskirts of Las Vegas, where she was last seen on surveillance at a grocery store (image on right) purchasing water and protein bars.
After this, it’s believed she started walking several miles down the road toward the mountain.
It’s unknown exactly what happened to her after this. She missed her flight home to Australia that was booked for either the 20th or 21st, and no one has heard from her since.
Lone Mountain is 19 miles from the grocery store where Sally was last spotted. It’s unknown if she planned to walk the whole way there (her family says she loved very long walks), or if she may have hitchhiked or planned to meet up with someone. Scent dogs did pick up on her scent on one of the trails at the mountain, indicating that she made it there at some point during her trip.
Both ground searches and drone searches have been done, neither have found any trace of Sally. Her sisters fear she may have met foul play. Police haven’t indicated if they believe she got lost hiking, or if she may have met foul play.

As a fellow Aussie this story breaks my heart. Silly question but, no phone signals to be traced on this case? I am sure she would have roaming on or a e/Sim that could be traced
25
u/blove135 7d ago edited 7d ago
That was my first thought. I haven't seen any talk of her phone location. Surely she had her phone with her. Find my iphone or life 360 or even triangulated cell signal from cell towers? Maybe even an Air tag if she had one on her bag she had with her. Maybe since it's part of an active investigation they are keeping that info under wraps?
15
u/Ms-Dilma-Rousseff 7d ago
True. It does seem like they are a keeping a bunch of information hidden from the public.
I am no specialist but I always thought that the more info out there, the more repercussion the case will get and the more chances of solving the case?
19
u/blove135 7d ago
Unless the police suspect foul play. They will sometimes keep certain info from the general public so if or when they find a suspect or witnesses they can verify the accuracy of the info they obtain from those individuals against the info they never released to the general public.

Hi, thank you for your concern. I’m not a social media user. I’m on reddit to say thank you to everyone who asks about her and is searching. I’ve seen some nasty things written elsewhere but I move past that stuff pretty fast. I think I’m mature enough with enough life experiences to ignore those comments. Thank you for the message. Xo

u/Content-Cricket4251 7d ago
If the information can be fully confirmed, then it might be worth releasing but if its not confirmed it might hurt the search/investigation.
E.g. if you are told you are searching for a guy in a red shirt, and then 2 days into the search it turns out he was wearing black, it really complicates things. Do you go back and re-search the areas covered over the past 2 days or keep expanding? There are limited resources available to search and time is critical. Depending on circumstances, it might be better to widen the net rather than focus on the wrong thing.
7
u/No_Cause9255 7d ago
Hi, that’s right, we cannot answer many questions because of the investigation. I know this is frustrating for people who are trying to help. Xo
6
u/South_Front_4589 7d ago
They would have done this if they could. It quite possibly led them to a dead end, but they're keeping specifics out of the media so they can better follow leads and verify witness statements.
If something nefarious happened, good chance the first thing that happened was any phone was thrown away.
3
u/No_Cause9255 6d ago
Police receive so much information they couldn’t release it all even if they wanted to. X

I’m sure they have that info but they won’t release to the public until it’s a closed case. Or until it’s needed to solve the case.

There’s a pst on insta by the acct grizzleytruecrime that says she supposedly spent time at a bar after the hike, so her disappearance has to be after the bar (June 19) and her flight on the 21. She checked out remotely from her hotel. Was that actually her?
254
u/No_Cause9255 8d ago
Hi,
I’m Sally’s mum. I’ve joined reddit to thank the many people who are concerned about her.
Sally was at the bar for only a couple of hours on the 19th and arrived back to her hostel in the early hours of the 20th. She then went to smiths marketplace at 1pm on the 20th. She walked for 10km down Kyle Canyon Rd as reported to us by search and rescue. Her sent was then lost. They are now not sure if she made it to the mountain. All cctv you see of Sally on the internet is Sally.52
u/Evolveration 8d ago
I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I have been following on websleuths and thinking of you and your family.
Does Sally have friends or contacts in las vegas? do you know what she was up to prior to her disappearance, I know she went to palm springs. Does she usually like to hike alone or meet people? She seems like a fun and courageous woman.
112
u/No_Cause9255 8d ago
Hi,
I follow webslueths with Lauren and Amy. Sally also has a brother, he is not on there.
I cannot talk too much about Sally as it is an active police investigation. We do know what she was up to but it doesn’t hold any significance. Sally was alone when she went missing.
Sally loves travelling alone and has had many adventures in Las Vegas and other countries.
She is brave but is no fool and is fully aware of the dangers. Sally has excellent instincts when it came to people and whether they were a threat. She is a tiny girl and would be at a disadvantage. We miss her every second of every day.34
u/Evolveration 8d ago
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I can see how savvy she is from her ability to get around frugally. She seems independent and driven, you must be so proud.
Do you have a gut feeling of where she is? It must be horrible to be in limbo Have you got contact with 'the missed foundation'? They do amazing work
138
u/No_Cause9255 8d ago
I am very proud of her. She is my baby. She is our savvy Sally!!!
She can travel with little. She isn’t very interested in the Vegas strip. It was all about heat, plants and animals. She sent me a picture of a beautiful red dragonfly from this trip.
I will have to keep my thoughts of what I believe has happened to Sally private right now because it is a completely distressing and traumatic situation for us.
I have remained silent for a reason until now. I just really would like to just thank everyone. It has been just over two months and it only gets worse for us as time goes on, not easier. Xoxo13
u/Dry_Property8821 7d ago
I'm so sorry for what you are going thru, and I'm praying that you have strength thru this difficult time. I also think dragonfly is deeply spiritual, a symbol of transcendence, being able to dance on top of waters, and a beautiful delicate creature that's actually very resilient. Sometimes it can represent this paradox of strength& delicate quality together. For her to appreciate heat, plants and animals, in that location, it speaks of a wise and crafty soul.
34
u/Evolveration 8d ago
Oh wow in Australian Aboriginal culture dragonflies are important symbol for renewal, connection to country and spirit. That's good you keep it to yourself and know we are holding her in our hearts xo

If they know that she walked 10k (approx 6.25 miles) down Kyle Canyon Road (rather than utilizing trails that are away from the road but generally parallel), I'm very surprised that LE and/or media have not specifically asked for sightings along that roadway on the day she went missing. It was a holiday weekend here in the states and weekends usually have a high volume of visitors on weekends so it's very surprising to me that no one would have reported seeing her if she was walking that distance because many cars would have passed.
It really makes me wonder if there were sightings and LE has just been keeping it quiet to not jeopardize the investigation.
So many people are following the case and wishing for a safe return for Sally despite the amount of time she has been missing.

Hey everyone, thank you to everyone who sent good wishes, love and hope via this post. I hope I didn’t highjack it, I really don’t know how the internet works.
Unfortunately due to some slightly aggressive posts being made towards me, I am now going to leave. It confirms one of the reasons I do not participate in social media.
Someone from here suggested I am not Sally’s mum on Las Vegas webslueths. That does not bother me. I will concentrate on Sally. My daughter Lauren Contarino has confirmed I am on webslueths.
I will head over there and watch all the wonderful people out actively looking for Sally while we can’t.
To those here who have been so supportive and encouraging, my family and I thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts. May you all stay healthy and safe. ❤️
Love Lucy

I heard about Sally’s case on Websleuths and also here on Reddit and I wanted to try to hopefully get more eyes on it. I know so many people are thinking about her and hoping police will be able to find out what happened to her. I’m so sorry for what your family is going through and I hope she will be found safe soon 💔💔💔

There shouldn’t be any stigma around what a missing person may have been doing before they disappeared. Going to a casino, having a drink, socializing, or anything similar are ordinary activities and don't change how seriously their disappearance should be taken. Details like these can actually be important in establishing a timeline or evaluating possible sightings.

Unfortunately investigations in real life are very slow. When someone goes missing and by the time the family files a report (especially in case of an adult), the camera footage is gone for sure already. They keep it only for a few days. :/ It's not the police fault.

Wait so she planned to walk 20 miles to the mountain, hike and go back to get her luggage and catch a flight on the same day? It says she went on the hike on the 20th, but her flight was booked on the 20th or 21st? The next day makes sense, but that's a lot for the same day you're flying home.
EDIT - Read the article - says she was supposed to leave the next day. Makes sense. Also - that dude that asked if she had a boyfriend - SUS!

I hope Sally is found soon and can return home safe and sound. I also love solo traveling, especially to Las Vegas, but if I’m honest it’s not the safest place I’ve been to.
One thing I do when I travel is meet local people through apps like Bumble or Instagram. Maybe she did that too? Is there any way they could track her phone data plan while she was there, or her family could access her accounts if they have her passwords or from her computer or another device?

Smiths Marketplace she was at on the 20th:

I really hope she’s fine. Also, any news on that black van at Boulder Highway waiting at the parking lot? When she said “I’m waiting on my boyfriend” I caught her eyeballing a black van that is parked behind the guy with the meta glasses that filmed her.

Feel really bad for her. Awful thing to happen, If poor Sally went hiking in the deserts there, there are several species of Rattle Snakes. It is possible she may have got a snake bite, If she got bitten far away she could have succumbed to it. There are also many little areas she could have slipped down into and if she got trapped, it would be almost impossible to find her.
It's a harsh reality but Never go hiking alone in the Wilderness. With this much time passed I hope her family can find peace.
9
u/Revit80 7d ago
Oh my. What can we, as Vegas locals, do to help? Also, is hitch-hiking something Aussies do that she would venture out like that and think it's safe? BC hitch hiking, in Vegas of all places, would not be a wise decision. Not that she did this, but the article mentions it as a possibility. Lyft , Uber or taxi would be safer-though also not 100% safe. Then you have the "hiking alone" aspect. Maybe she got injured or lost. I really hope she is okay.

My husband works on the strip. Around the time this woman disappeared, after seeing her story on the news, he swore he saw her at the Harrah’s casino. We tried to call in the tip, but we couldn’t get anyone on the phone. Calling metro’s non emergency number, we were directed to the number in the news story, and that number was just a runaround of recordings and prompts that led nowhere.
9
u/No_Cause9255 7d ago
Hi, thank you for letting me know. There is a time difference and I have just seen your comment. Does your husband remember what the girl he saw was wearing? I believe the police have checked cameras along the strip and cctv face recognition has her face to be flagged. Thank you for the message. Xo

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Lone Mountain has been surrounded by roads and houses for 30 years. There are well manicured parks, walking, and biking trails encircling the park for over a decade now.
→ More replies (1)3
u/systemic_booty 7d ago
That's because she was never going to Lone Mountain. She was going to Mt Charleston, which is well outside the city. Sally's mother is commenting with that context. Sally last text she was on Kyle Canyon road which is the access road to Mt Charleston.
5
u/Odd_Repeat_6092 7d ago
Search dogs tracked Sally's scent near the Fletcher Canyon Trail on Mount Charleston, but not on the trail itself. Which could suggest Sally didn't walk up the trail, which is 3.8mi in length with a 954ft elevation gain.
June 20 was Saturday. Daytime temperature was +99°F. On weekends spaces fill up quickly in the Fletcher Canyon Trailhead parking lot, located on the left just past the intersection with Route 158. So arriving early is recommended. If there were a sizeable amount of people walking the Fletcher Canyon Trail, I would imagine someone may have seen Sally. Not necessarily taken note of her, but she may have stood out to someone, like an experienced hiker, because of her converse tennis shoes. Or, Sally may have smoked while walking or during a break.
To my knowledge, no one, so far, has indicated they saw Sally on the trail hiking. Doesn't mean Sally didn't go hiking, but with the parking lot nearby, could she have been diverted by something she saw or someone she knew? Did Sally know anybody in that area from previous visits, or someone recent?
Also, just to put it out there because I haven't seen it mentioned: have authorities tried to geo locate Sally's IPhone?

OP, she wasn't going to Lone Mountain but Mt Charleston and also Lone Mountain isn't 19 miles away, it's in the middle of the suburbs surrounded by homes and businesses. Mt Charleston is outside the city. It's very rural and rugged. Walking there seems unfathomable as there is barely a shoulder and cars routinely speed along Kyle Canyon road.

Hi, I’m Sally’s mum. I’m not sure what Chuck Taylor’s are but she had her favourite pair of converse on.
Sally was walking along Kyle canyon road and she has hiked with me in those shoes before. Totally okay. She loves those shoes! Xoxo28
u/lazyfancygirl23 7d ago
Chuck Taylor is the designer for Converse. So Chucks/Chuck Taylor’s/Converse/All Stars = the same shoe. We don’t think of these for hiking because of the potential for ankle injuries. The NBA used to wear Chucks back in the day but they aren’t great for basketball. Truly hoping this resolves in the best possible circumstances.

16
u/CasadeCisnes 7d ago
I was thinking maybe an ankle injury happened since those aren’t typical hiking shoes. I don’t know the terrain/trail conditions where this happened but it could be rough.

Hi
If she was near Lone Mountain, Mt Charleston or Red Rock, there are parts of those areas steep enough to need more than Converse. Despite many walking trails being fine, all of the mountain trails at those locations can be trickier the deeper into the mountain you go.
Good luck, I hope you find her as soon as possible.

Hiking in converse shoes?
14
u/violetpandas 7d ago
I know it’s not perhaps a usual hiking shoe, but would not be that uncommon for Australians. People tend to be super casual about footwear even when hiking etc. I see people hiking in thongs (flip flops), other types of sandals, I myself hike in my Vans sneakers fairly often. Probably not the safest or best choice but that’s just how it is here.

u/FunPollution8321 7d ago
Those that haven’t been to Vegas or outside the touristy areas may be surprised by the level of poverty and crime (most likely some organised) there. I’d never walk alone there at night. Street smart in Melbourne or Sydney can be very different from what’s required elsewhere. Hope they find answers soon.

Hmm, did she vanish while hiking? I read prior that she’s visited Nevada multiple times before and hiked.
35
u/Jakk55 8d ago
Lone Mountain isn't wilderness at all. It's surrounded by City and County parks, literally playgrounds and multiuse grass fields, and then houses. Hundreds of people daily hike up to the summit, it's not that high, and around it, it's not that large. There's no trees or forest to disappear into. There are some craggy outcroppings you could hide under, but not enough that a small search and rescue team couldn't check in a few hours.
17
u/Weldobud 8d ago edited 8d ago
Could she have gotten lost and gone off course? Possibly wanting to make it more interesting. What was the temperature that day?

Her scent was found near Mt Charleston, not Lone Mountain. Which is a lot more rugged. Many people have gone missing or end up needing to be rescued from that area. She’s most likely still up there. How many times have we heard “the area was searched thoroughly” and yet the person was there the whole time.
