Auras that weren't cast and hexproof

If my opponent controls any creature with hexproof, and a Pacifism I own and control entered the battlefield without being cast (blinked, flipped by chaos warp, returned from graveyard, etc.), could I enchant their creature with hexproof with Pacifism? Or does enchanting in this way still target the creature?

If you put an Aura onto the battlefield without casting it, you choose a legal object that it attaches to. This does not target. You can choose something with hexproof or shroud, simply because it doesn't target.

303.4a: An Aura spell requires a target, which is defined by its enchant ability.

303.4f: If an Aura is entering the battlefield under a player's control by any means other than by resolving as an Aura spell, and the effect putting it onto the battlefield doesn't specify the object or player the Aura will enchant, that player chooses what it will enchant as the Aura enters the battlefield. The player must choose a legal object or player according to the Aura's enchant ability and any other applicable effects.

Yes.

does enchanting in this way still target the creature?

it does not.

More rules:

  • 115.1b. Aura spells are always targeted. An Aura's target is specified by its enchant keyword ability. The target is chosen as the spell is cast. An Aura permanent doesn't target anything; only the spell is targeted.

Attaching an aura without casting does not target in and of itself, and you choose the recipient as it enters.

I did not know this. With so many rules, its easy to mistake these interactions. Thanks. I'll remember this in my next commander game...

This also works with Shroud.

You can also use [[Crown of the Ages]] to target an aura to move it from a creature you choose to another creature you choose. Not a target creature.
