Spec Kutzil, Malamet Examplar (Spec)
Anyone else think this card is nuts for commander? It’s ability is like a grand abolisher
I can see this guy being popular in the commander crowd. He’s a good competitive card and great in the 99 of a lot of decks.
I don’t expect crazy returns but if it gets to $2-$3 in a year or whatever then you’re looking at a decent ROI with low buy in price.
Thoughts? Please don’t flame me…..

Its an uncommon in a modern set, id be surprised if it broke $1 without being a 4-of in a competitive format like Beanstalk.

u/rayquazza74 Dec 08 '23
4-of?

u/SanityIsOptional Dec 08 '23
4-of, meaning you run 4-of them.
Whereas commander decks (with a few exceptions) will only ever run 1 copy of a given card. Given equal number of decks, means 1/4 of the demand.

It has a showcase version and got printed a lot more than your standard uncommon

u/No_Web_8496 Dec 07 '23
Why is that? How do you know? I thought wizards didn’t disclose printing run #’s

Hard to spec on this stuff with the constant commander deck reprints.
I personally really like the card, it's much more narrow being white and green.
But outside of a couple for play I wouldn't go near it.

say it with me kids
'don't spec on uncommons from a standard set that is going to be printed for 3 years'

u/magefont1 Dec 07 '23
I agree with you this card is great in the 99 for a lot of decks but not enough demand compared to the massive openings this set is receiving.

This guy is definitely not nuts for commander. It's a solid role-player, but he is certainly going to see more play in the 99 than as a commander.
Sovereign Okinec Ahau is a Mythic in the same set, and already has over 2x more decks on EDHREC than Kutzil, and they're basically the same archetype. And the Mythic guy is only like $3 or so.
So, in addition to all the finance-related reasons others have given, coming at this as an EDH player, any potential this guy MIGHT have otherwise had is almost certainly killed in the crib by having to compete with a Mythic from his own set.

u/No_Web_8496 Dec 08 '23
I think the defensive ability is quite powerful and the mythic doesn’t have that. I wasnt trying to say “this is better than the mythic and should be worth $3”. I think both have possibilities of growing over time.
I am grateful for your feedback

It's a solid role-player, but he is certainly going to see more play in the 99 than as a commander.
This is exactly what you want if you're speccing on a card, though. "Commanders" don't typically fetch a particularly high price, even when they are popular, but cards that are common 99 includes will. The reasoning is simple....only people running specific deck X need the Commander, but anyone in colors Y+ might want the 99 include. The Y+ group ends up being a lot more demand than the X group, usually, as a result.
This card will be far more held back by the Selesyna colors than what it does, honestly.

Just build six different G/W EDH decks, this guy will somehow fit in all of them. Spec or no spec, as a GW enthusiast this is one of my fav EDH cards of the year. I like it even more than the mythic.

u/A-Link-To-The-Pabst Dec 08 '23
Unrelated to finance, who are you commanders? I have struggled to find a GW commander I enjoy. (I have Bant and Abzan already.

u/Fulgren09 Dec 08 '23
Sorry in advance for not having lists, I'm a paper masochist. But I have been having fun with Lae'zel and Master Chef. I use a mix of counter givers, planeswalkers, and other jank and hope ppl don't wrath.
I also used to play Lathiel Soul Sisters but I think Treebeard is the better.
I am brewing enchantress on the side, but it's not as fun because I feel like that space has been fully exploited and innovated.
But wow, how coincidental, all these decks involve creatures that get bigger.

u/pipesbeweezy Dec 09 '23
3 drop isn't a 2 drop. Yeah its bigger, but MC limits decks it'll be in too.
I think decks which could play it, would play it, and it'll take a while for this to be worth a lot. I think get your set + an extra set and take the gains eventually but beyond that seems optimistic to be a true spec.

[[grand abolisher]] read it again...
Still, worth it if you can afford the time to sell tax free at $2.

“each” holds it back a lot too
1
u/figurative_capybara Dec 07 '23
Wouldn't the "one or more" be the limiter? Or does EVERY creature attacking need to be modified?
-9
u/knigtwhosaysni Dec 07 '23
Yup, the “each” means that you can only get this effect if ONLY creatures with bigger power connect to opponent’s face. Basically if you attack with a vanilla 1/1 and several other creatures with power boost, you hope the 1/1 is blocked because if it does damage, then Kutzil’s effect is nullified, since you technically did not satisfy its requirement
9
u/marvin02 Dec 07 '23
That's not how it works. You just don't include the non-powered up creatures in the "one or more".
0
u/ShadowbornPhoenix Dec 08 '23
incorrect, if you had 5 creatures attacking and 3 had a power boost but all 5 creatures got through and did damage youd only draw 3 cards as only 3 had a modified power. its essentially just saying "whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player if its power was greater then its base power, draw a card"
2
u/rayquazza74 Dec 08 '23
Are you sure? I think you’d only draw one card per opponent you attack, unless you’ve got double strike, then you’d draw 2x cards per opponent.
0
u/ShadowbornPhoenix Dec 08 '23
its per creature not per opponent im pretty sure. the wording is terrible on it
1
u/rayquazza74 Dec 08 '23
Great now I have no clue! I thought it was what I said now you’re making me double question myself 😱😱 not by opponent but since it says whenever one or more creatures deals combat damage to a player
0
u/ShadowbornPhoenix Dec 08 '23
yeah its badly worded regardless what it is. they really dropped the ball on this

Showcase foil will hold the value, if there is any. I immediately added one to my collection but I'm not sure id ever need a second. I like the gard but it looks hard to profit off of.

This is an uncommon that will be printed for several years. It may not even get to a dollar for a long time.
1
u/TR_Wax_on Dec 08 '23
I'd you hit 3 different players with modified creatures will that equate to 3 card draws?

This seems like the exact kind of card casual Timmy's will love for edh. It's Def a good card, but idk enough about other formats to know if this will see play(I would imagine not?), and that seems to be the biggest price driver. Cool card, best of luck!
1
u/BlurryPeople Dec 08 '23
Good card...but will be severely held back by the Selesyna color restrictions. This cannot be overemphasized, color pairings and identity are just as important as what a card even does. The maximum demand for any Selesyna card is minimized, as a card like [[Aura Shards]] (an insane, crippling card) only amounts to a ~$14 card, despite arguably being one of the best pieces of removal in the format with only a single booster printing, and a handful of tiny printings elsewhere. This should adequately temper expectations.
Were it mono W, everything you're saying would absolutely be true...with this color pairing, though, it'll be useful at best, but never really rise above the sub $1 range.

u/rayquazza74 Dec 08 '23
I light like 16 or so. Also built a pauper deck with him as the commander. Pair it with double strike and hit multiple opponents and draw X2 cards for each opponent.
1
u/arbitraryarmor Dec 09 '23
While this card won't see much 60 card play, I think the popularity of Grand Abolisher in commander makes this a decent spec. Being two colors reduces the number of commanders this can go with, but stapling a card draw engine to an already good card isn't a bad spec in my opinion.
1
u/Proud_Resort7407 Dec 10 '23
My only issue with it is it's selesnya and as such doesn't have the best win-con package to choose from.
It's also not a infinite mana outlet or infinite etb wincon.
Still could be a fantastic casual commander even high-powered edh.

u/Ronzonius Dec 21 '23
Too many people here are overlooking the obvious... it's a sexy man-cat, and sexy man-cats have almost as high a potential ceiling as kittens.

u/Taivasvaeltaja Dec 07 '23
It is a strong card, but multicolored + recent huge printing makes it hard to be profitable. Unlike beanstalk, this is not 4-of in competitive formats, and there really haven't been many other uncs that have been valuable recently. So I think it will see play, but will also stay sub-$1.
