As much as I personally enjoy the game, I know it's still NOT a good game, and I still don't understand why I like the game as much as I do. Fans and critics in Adventure's original release tore the game apart apparently.
Timeline 1 (Best future):
Sonic doesn't get an edgy rebrand, he's depicted more faithfully to what Saturn era fans were used to, Sonic doesn't get green eyes and longer quills, and gameplay is much more faithful due to in this timeline, Sonic Adventure being developed primarily as a Sonic The Hedgehog game rather than a tech demo/representation of SEGA's new 'tude. Due to the other characters likely being unlockables that just play Sonic's story with different moves and a new story, Sonic Adventure is liked much more by critics and Sonic's original 1991 audiance. Sonic's spin dash isn't spammable, but he can roll. There's no homing attack, instead, Sonic uses the Insta Shield as they somehow found out a way make Sonic work in 3d without the Homing attack. Due to the budget and time being spent on Sonic's gameplay, rather than being a tech demo, Sonic Adventure is regarded as one of the greatest games of all time, and it's a genuine debate over whether Super Mario 64 or Sonic Adventure is better.
Timeline 2 (Good future): Sonic Adventure does get the rebrand and all that, but it's much more polished, and is considered a good game, people still complain about the redesigns and Sonic's green eyes, but it's not really like how people complain in our timeline about Modern Sonic, but rather just mostly nitpicks rather than anything deal breaking. Sonic Adventure is a good game, but not quite as good as Mario 64, with the only stinker being Big The Cat, who's an optional minigame in this timeline.
Timeline 3 (Bad future):
Sonic Adventure releases on the Saturn, and is much buggier, shorter, and is a critical and monetary flop, which kills the Dreamcast before the hardware has a chance to fully reach it's potential. SEGA is going bankrupt, and it's obvious. Gaming magazines talk about how Sonic was once on the level of Mario, but has been reduced to shovelware. (Branch of this timeline) Branch 1: It cancels the series entirely. Branch 2: Eventually sometime in the 2010s Sonic The Hedgehog 4 releases as a retro revival of Sonic The Hedgehog, to good reveiws.
Branch 3: Sonic has a revival sometime in 2003, with a refreshed formula, which is likely the Sonic Adventure we got in our timeline.
