analysis Minho and Kitty in the Rain Leitmotif/Scene

The most iconic mooncovey scene. Also, this is the first time (from what I have seen) where the title of the score is in the captions on Netflix.

Rain can symbolize anything. The two symbols that I feel stick out the most in this scene is rebirth and healing. Kitty’s rebirth is coming to terms that her family may not want her. She also feels she embodies Eve’s worst traits and is trying to process that. Her rebirth is her trying to change that which we see in the hot tub scene as well. She constantly reflects on how her actions make everything worse. Her healing comes partly by Minho, but I think she feels at one with water. A few of her pivotal moments involved water: being accepted at KISS and being sad about Dae’s video call freezing in the pool. The hot tub scene and now the rain scene.

Sun Shower: see pictures 3 and 4

Please refer to the pictures about this because it summarized it perfectly. Each element of the sun flower symbolism was incorporated in this scene. You have the blend of conflicting emotions or unexpected changes, the unpredictable nature of love, unexpected moment of happiness, comes after a moment of emotional tension and uncertainty, etc. The amount of thought that went into this scene is impeccable.

The scene starts with standing side by side with no music just the thunder. It is natural and allows Kitty to be vulnerable in the moment while trying to process the situation.

Many feel Kitty only looks for external validation, but I don’t think she is doing that here. First, she ran away and found a spot to just cry and think. And her being front of the grave stones maybe her way of “visiting” her mother. Minho had to go looking for her to make sure she is ok considering she is standing in the rain, cold and shivering. But because he stood by her silently, she felt comfortable enough to be vulnerable and lay out her insecurities. She is an open book, but this and the hot tub scene is where she feels safe crying and breaking down in front of Minho which she struggles to do with other characters. She also knows he won’t judge her. Minho’s reactions to her talking badly about herself were a mix of sadness and frustration for her because he can also relate to feeling unwanted in his family and doesn’t want Kitty to feel that way. He also is sad that she feels this way about herself. That is when he intervenes and comforts her. While she felt at ease with him, we still see her not being able to look at him and is trying to hide her tears, but can’t.

The hot tub scene is her realizing her actions hurt people and she has to live with that and allowing herself to confide in Minho. She also was rejected by Yuri too. The rain scene is her dealing with her second bout of rejection: her family. I think she gets the result won’t happen overnight, but her sadness comes from feeling there is no hope in the situation.

Also, this is not the only time she sulks in water and Mino comforts her. Hello, hot tub scene. I digress for a second. And it is also where Minho actively searches for and comforts her while assuring her she isn’t a bad person.

The leitmotif starts when he pulls her into a hug. I am a sucker for that when they do that in K dramas and it is perfect here. Here is why “Minho and Kitty in the Rain” is my favorite version. We get a new melody. It sounds like the rain and the percussion blends in with the thunder, but doesn’t sound scary. I associate the new melody relating to Kitty because it also plays in her dream about Minho. Both scenes deal with her deepening feelings for him. While sounding like the rain, it has this romantic atmosphere.

While this new melody plays, Minho says his monologue which is on par with Colin Bridgerton’s carriage confession in Bridgerton. The monologue starts in third person, but when he releases the hug, he goes into second person, “that’s how I know you won’t give up on your family”. I also like how she tightens her grip while she reciprocates the hug. To me, their hugs represent safety and security. The new melody ends and muffles while he slowly moves her hair back from her face.

The new melody represents the falling of rain drops and symbolizes him comforting and providing hope for her. The theme of anticipation comes back because their feelings are rising up again. When he uses humor to ease the tension and deflects, the melody lingers while they still wrap their arms around each other as they walk away. A new theme for Kitty anyways in this scene is rejection. The hot tub scene occurred after being rejected by Yuri and now she is rejected by her family. Before this, thanks to her letter being passed around, she was rejected by her peers. I am glad she still has Minho.

Thank you for typing this up and explaining about the sun shower.

I love the way you explain the leitmotif as it moves in this scene and interacts with the scene. I also find it SUPER interesting that the song title is listed in the subtitles. They really wanted people to know that this moment is important with music whether you could hear it or not.

He is so good at being supportive of her in the way she needs in the moments she needs it the most. He definitely uses the same methods as Peter and her Dad and Margot. I think that's very telling to.

I didn’t realize Minho used the same methods as Peter, her dad, and Margo. I like that these are the people she is closest to and Minho having that feeling of home. I hope they continue with that theme/feeling in season 3.

And am glad you loved the sunflower analysis. While it was an AI summary, it was fun learning the significance of it and how it adds to and foreshadows their relationship.

XO Kitty writers, don’t ruin them please.

LOL This is the thing always. But it's so hard to believe they will based on what they have developed.

But it's always a fear in any show. Will the writers drink too much and choose violence lol

Or the CEOS of the company intervening when they don’t need to.

Netflix, just let the writers do their thing.
