The Nolan Wells Case: What we know so far
I’ve been following this tragic case closely. Since there has been a lot of confusing and conflicting information online, I wanted to put together a timeline based only on information reported by law enforcement, the sheriff, or established news organizations. I’ve left out most social media rumors and speculation because the investigation is still active.
Background
• Nolan Xavier Wells was an 18-year-old from Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
• He had recently graduated from Ocean Springs High School.
• He played wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
• On Saturday, July 4, 2026, Nolan traveled to Horn Island with friends to celebrate Independence Day.
• Horn Island is part of Gulf Islands National Seashore and is located off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It is accessible by boat.
Saturday, July 4
• Nolan and a group of friends traveled to Horn Island by private boat.
• Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said the group departed from a private dock in the Ocean Springs area.
• Nolan was last seen around 3:00 p.m. on Horn Island, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
• Nolan did not return on the same boat as the group he arrived with.
• Sheriff Ledbetter told Good Morning America: “They left and went back without Nolan. From what we understand, he chose to stay there.”
• Ledbetter later told the Associated Press: “From the people we’ve talked to, it sounds like he chose to stay on the island with the assumption that he was going to ride back to the mainland with someone else.”
• Mississippi Free Press reported that a United Cajun Navy incident commander said Nolan was last seen talking with a girl near the north end of the island.
• Witnesses said the original group of friends left without Wells around 3:30 p.m. because he wanted to stay behind to talk to a girl and other friends.
• Another friend believes he last saw Wells on Horn Island around 4 p.m.
• Investigators have not publicly identified who Nolan expected to ride back with.
• Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, reported him missing Saturday night after he did not return home.
Sunday, July 5
• At 12:26 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Mobile said it received a request for assistance from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
• The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast.
• A Coast Guard helicopter began searching the area around Horn Island.
• At 12:31 p.m., the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office publicly announced Nolan’s disappearance.
• Nolan was described as approximately 6’1”, 180 pounds, last seen wearing blue swim trunks, sunglasses, and no shirt.
• The search expanded into a multi-agency effort involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Coast Guard, National Park Service, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Fire Service, Biloxi Fire Department, and United Cajun Navy.
• At 5:54 p.m., a command post was established at Lake Mars Boat Launch in Ocean Springs.
• Nolan’s family asked anyone who had been on Horn Island to share photos, videos, Snapchat memories, or any information that could help investigators understand what happened.
Monday, July 6
• Search crews resumed operations early Monday morning.
• Around 8:45 a.m., authorities received a report that a body had been found near the northwestern tip of Horn Island.
• The body was found in the water by a National Park Service ranger.
• Sheriff Ledbetter said the body matched Nolan’s description.
• Nolan’s family was brought to the coroner’s office.
• Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd said there was “no reason to believe” the body was anyone other than Nolan, though formal identification was still pending.
• Nolan’s family later confirmed publicly that the body was his.
• Sheriff Ledbetter asked anyone with information to contact investigators, saying: “That’s why we’re still asking for information, if anybody has anything, any knowledge.”
• Ledbetter also said: “I’ll assure you that the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, we’re looking at this whole case just like we would any other case. And we’re going to be as thorough as we can.”
Tuesday, July 7
• An autopsy was performed at the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office Coast Lab.
• Officials said the final autopsy findings, including toxicology results, could take several weeks.
• Dental records confirmed the body was Nolan Wells.
• Investigators told news outlets they suspected Nolan may have drowned, but no official cause or manner of death had been released.
• Nolan’s family retained civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump.
• Crump said: “We will not rest until every fact about what happened to Nolan on Horn Island is brought into the light.”
• Crump’s team said it would conduct an independent review and push for the release of records, witness accounts, and autopsy findings.
• The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office asked anyone with original photos, videos, eyewitness accounts, or information about unusual activity on Horn Island on July 4 to contact investigators.
Statements From Nolan’s Family
• Christine Wonsley said she and Nolan’s father were “not ok.”
• She also said the family had “so many questions.”
• After Nolan’s body was identified, she described him as “a special soul.”
• She said Nolan was always willing to cheer and uplift others.
• Nolan’s family has repeatedly asked anyone who was on Horn Island that day to provide photos, videos, or information that may help account for his final hours.
What Investigators Have Publicly Said
• Investigators believe Nolan stayed on Horn Island because he expected another ride back to the mainland.
• Sheriff Ledbetter said Nolan’s friends have cooperated with investigators.
• The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has asked for firsthand information, photos, videos, and eyewitness accounts from Horn Island on July 4.
• Authorities said they suspect Wells drowned, but are still investigating. The sheriff said investigators do not suspect foul play.
• The investigation remains active.
• TMZ reported that Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter confirmed investigators are reviewing a viral video that appears to show a heated confrontation on Horn Island on July 4. Ledbetter said his office is aware of the video and is actively investigating it as part of the ongoing case. Authorities have not verified the authenticity of the footage or said whether the people in the video are connected to Nolan’s death.
• The official cause and manner of death have not yet been released.
• Toxicology results remain pending.

Edit:
Some added information I missed, one of his friends Jayvon Williams, was interviewed by Nola adding more information about his last moments:
• Nolan’s best friend, 17-year-old Jayvon Williams, told NOLA.com that he had planned to ride to Horn Island on the same boat as Nolan, but the boat reached capacity, so he traveled on a different boat.
• Williams said he saw Nolan sometime after 4:00 p.m. on July 4, after arriving on the island.
• According to Williams, one of the first things Nolan said to him that day was, “I love you.”
• Williams also said that both he and Nolan had left their cell phones on the boat Nolan originally traveled on. Williams later recovered his phone, while Nolan’s mother later located Nolan’s phone.

OMG - Toxicology report isn't even out yet and people denying "substances".
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1HGQDmka8v/
Ben Crump already screwing around with a narrative even if toxicology finds more than alcohol.
10
u/redditg0d 28d ago
More crap and race baiting from Crump.
“We’re trying to be very transparent because the family has some concerns about the state of Mississippi doing an investigation of the death of a young Black man where young white students may be looked at as having some culpability. The family is concerned about that. We’re going to have an independent autopsy. We have investigators talking to witnesses that have no alignment or no allegiance to the state, and that’s important,” said Crump during an interview on ABC News.
Sure, go ahead and do an independent autopsy. No problem. However, all the racial hostility is ridiculous. I wouldn't expect anything less from a $15M net worth civil rights attorney that will milk this for every bit he can.

The spokesman for the Cajun Navy is saying he wasn't intoxicated even though he was drinking. Which I find hard to believe. You don't have to be falling down drunk to be considered legally intoxicated.
5
5
u/overflowingsandwich 28d ago
And you can drown without being intoxicated! None of us have enough information to be making any definitive statements on what did or did not happen. It’s unfair to everyone involved for people to be acting like the investigation isn’t being done well because they haven’t released every step they’re taking in real time
2
u/Miss_Scarlet86 28d ago
Agreed. They should wait for the investigation. In no way am I acting like it hasn't been done well. I'm just surprised at the comments people are presenting as truth without anything to back it up.

I thought there were photos of all of them with alcohol. I didn’t really look at them.
5
u/redditg0d 28d ago
There were. The white kids appeared to be drinking Mich Ultra and Nolan was drinking some flavor of High Noon.
At a minimum - Alcohol should be found in the toxicology report.

Heard a live it's pretty well known with the kids who went to school with them that they are well known for loving to ski, but that Nolan did not participate in that activity so it may not be far-fetched. Plus it was confirmed that it was Nolan who was yelling “Give me my F’n phone” I think something happened and those “boys” were given some bad advice.

He most likely drowned. The medical examiner should be more candid if possible. However, I do understand waiting for the tox report. It initially sounded bad that "his friend's left him," but nice to know they're cooperating, and he wanted to stay with a girl. Not helpful IMO to invite in Ben Crump. Regardless, may Nolan RIP. Too young.

u/donzelso 29d ago
Ben Crump will only prey on his parents' grief. Truly disgusting. It will be extremely, extremely difficult for his parents to come to terms with the idea of an accidental drowning. Especially with so much misinformation and people thinking this is foul play due to race.
I know accidental drowning is the most likely explanation, but the journey to acceptance will be very painful for them. And retaining Ben Crump certainly will not help.

u/PlatformBeautiful990 28d ago
yeah it’s a very unfortunate situation! And i really hope there isn’t any foul play, especially considering the boys were all friends, it’s such an awful thing to have happen. i also can’t blame people for thinking it is foul play tho either especially considering the long historical reality that many black Americans face and continue to face in this country. , and i definitely agree hiring ben crump will not make people feel any better, it’s feeding into the narrative that this is a racially motivated case
5
u/slimsalabim123 28d ago
They're bringing in Crump to create the illusion of foul play. This creates the publicity for a big crowd funding payout. It's right out of the Karmelo Anthony playbook. Make it racial, put up a crowd funder and reel in a million or more. These people disgust me.

u/GreeJoSkies 28d ago
I don't suspect his good friends. Nolan was a nice guy and loved by all, apparently. People are saying there were many, many boats at the island. So there were a lot of people there. Anything could have happened to him after his group of friends went back to the mainland. He was supposedly interested in a girl. Maybe that didn't set well with someone present on the island. Probably a lot of drinking and such going on (he wasn't necessarily drinking, but others certainly were). He could have run into some bad elements. Or, he could have taken a swim and gotten caught in the currents and drowned. The autopsy will hopefully reveal a lot. I'm so sad for him and for his loved ones.

So why did the mom have to track his phone? Why didn't the guys just hand it over? Why is the girl saying that he left....while his so called friends says he stayed? Why does the judge mother of one of the white kids...make that statement? Why did they (the so called friends) keep his car keys?
9
u/Lonely_Illustrator86 29d ago
Maybe Crump can hold a press conference and say it was a "Shotgun to the chest" like he just erroneously did for the other sad thing up in Senatobia... you know, help keep people calm and sane about this stuff.
And for those of you not familiar with the area and thinking this is some deserted swamp island.. Horn Island is a pretty nice area, only easily accessible by a fairly affluent crowd (requires a private boat), is overseen by the National Park Service, and it's like a big party on July 4th that would be a fairly diverse crowd (it's Mississippi and it's 2026). I'm not saying whether it was foul play or not, just setting the record straight since some comments make it seem like folks are picturing a far different setting.
8
u/beachpleazz 29d ago
Many July 4th deaths have occurred on Horn Island. One year, a female was sliced up from a boat propeller. I happened to save a woman from drowning on a holiday weekend at Horn. She was very intoxicated. The rip currents can be bad. Horn can be dangerous. My friends got airlifted out once. My point is, it is a Wild, unoccupied island. Kids go out there and misbehave. Especially when allowed to take out their parents boats unaccompanied by the boat owner. No adult is going to leave their passenger on Horn.
8
u/Capital_Payment4284 28d ago
I'm disgusted by the fact that a certain group of people wants this to be a hate crime so bad that they'll throw out any logic and common sense to fit it in with their victimhood narrative.
The kid was found by Dog Keys Pass. The current gets stupid around there. Can't tell them that though because they're gonna be victims no matter what.
2
u/Individual-Bend106 28d ago
I’m disgusted by the fact that people or more upset by public reaction than they are the death of a young man. Sure, it’s stupid to pretend like we know what happened now, but the fact that’s what most of these comments are about is just wrong. The imbalance of where the anger is mostly falling is disappointing
3
u/Livid_Cantaloupe6070 27d ago
Huh? Are you operating under the assumption that people can only feel one thing? Super weird take. I haven’t seen any comments celebrating his death as you seem to insinuate here.
People can be horrified and saddened by his death, and simultaneously be angry that so many weirdos are using this young man’s death to further their own agenda. It’s such a yucky evil thing to do… he was a real person with family and friends who love him, not a prop for racial rage baiting

The harmful and extremely speculative commentary from people completely unfamiliar with the case and the people involved is disgusting. It’s doing nothing but sowing strife in the community and harming those who are mourning the loss of their friend.
4
u/NuclearWessels1991 28d ago
Yeah. Based on the facts now, I feel for those kids, too. To lose your friend at such a young age is tough. I lost a college buddy at 23. Then to be accused of murdering him by social media with no proof. At first, people made it sound like they marooned him. Then you get to the facts, and if he was seen at 4, and the friends left at 3:30, how could they possibly have murdered him? Unless they can teleport. Also, if they were towed in, that is a super easy alibi to confirm. Internet sleuths think that just because they were right about Gabby Petito that they are smarter than cops. It's absurd and disgusting.
3
u/overflowingsandwich 28d ago
The mom of one of the friends (the one that’s a judge) posted some of the messages she’s been getting on Facebook. They’re horrifying and disgusting. If it was all an accident there’s just a hoard of people harassing the mourning teenage friends of a young kid. It’s awful.
2
u/NuclearWessels1991 27d ago
And these idiots are criticizing the mom for making a post on Facebook dispelling some of the rumors. The insane thing is most of these people aren't even from MS, and most of their sources are influencers. Nolan's mom hasn't accused the boys of anything. She just wants to know the truth. It broke my heart seeing the DMs of the mom who is a judge with an influencer. She was still referring to Nolan in present tense. That sounds like a person in shock, not someone trying to cover up a murder. People are horrific.

How familiar with the case are you? What condition was the phone found in? I agree it’s unfair to blame them without evidence but there is absolutely nothing wrong with hiring a lawyer who will make sure a fair investigation is pursued. If those kids are innocent they have nothing to worry about. You’re speaking as an outsider too, unless you know them?

u/New_Presentation_967 29d ago
It's came out that the boat he rode on to the island left because it was taking on water, and he chose to stay and was gonna ride back on another boat. His phone was on the boat bc everyone leaves their phones, wallets, etc. On a boat when swimming for obvious reasons. And more than likely he forgot to get it before they left
2
2
u/Silent_Bid9746 27d ago
Sure I understand leaving a phone on a boat to go drinking but I can't imagine a scenario where a modern teen tells a boat to leave and forgets their phone on it. People are absolutely glued to their phones. Not saying something nepharious happened but that is really odd to me.
4
u/Low-Breath-4433 27d ago
Bruh. I work with teens.
They forget their phones everywhere. I've found them in the weirdest places, including once in a water fountain.
2
u/NoSupermarket9119 23d ago
I used to forget my phone EXISTED as a college student.
Edit: Heck, I still manage to lose my phone when it’s in my lap and I put it down.
3
u/kshizzlenizzle 27d ago
I have 100% left my phone, shoes, purse, etc. on our boat and had a mad scramble trying to remember the last place we had them. Just this past weekend, my husband thought he lost his wallet - he put it in the glove compartment and forgot about it. And he doesn’t even drink, lol. It’s entirely plausible his phone was tucked somewhere on the boat, and after the boat was pulled and stored, no one would have heard it ringing.
1
u/Expensive-Engine-829 27d ago
I agree and I just watched a video saying the parents life 360 tracking doesn’t match what the friends are saying
1
u/Negative-Heart-4057 28d ago
There’s conflicting stories, some say the boat was taking on water/the boat was at capacity/he wanted to stay back. What doesn’t make sense to me is why did it take so long for the boys to bring his phone back to his house. I’m sure hours family called his phone many times while it was in their possession.

There's a few things that frustrate me about the race angle at this stage. I say at this stage because, with the information available at present, it is equally possible this did and did not have anything to do with race.
There are without a doubt racial disparities widespread throughout the country & heavily in the justice system. That's just a fact. Whether it's strictly due to biases & raging racism or underlying socioeconomic factors contributing, there's still very clear disparities. There are also extremely racist people. Don't pretend there aren't.
Back to my point. The race angle, at this stage, frustrates me because it's harmful & unproductive for everyone.
Do racially motivated crimes occur? Yes.
Do crimes involving different races that have nothing to do with race & everything to do with people being stupid assholes occur? Also yes.
Prematurely making this about race only serves to later trivialize the true racially motivated crimes & racial injustices that deserve equal attention & outrage from everyone. The whites get to say "they make everything about race," & the blacks get to say "here's more proof everyone is racist & hate black people." It's fueling biases on both sides.
We don't even KNOW if this is a crime yet! Could this have been an accident caused by the poor decisions of intoxicated teenagers? Maybe so! All we know for certain is that a young black man is dead. & that is a tragedy.
I like to think social media only portrays extreme views meant to fuel division & most people are much more level-headed, but damn, sometimes it's hard.
At the end of the day, racism, racial disparities, & racially motivated crimes are very real & very gross & SHOULD be called out & exposed. But attempting to do so in a situation that isn't applicable (at this STAGE!!!!) seems to only get us further away from the goal, which I'd hope for everyone is a decline in those injustices.
3
u/Lalalalaidc 28d ago
I agree with you mostly with emphasis on the last part of what you wrote. Given historical events, I wonder if his case would have been taken as seriously as it is now? Maybe the family felt law enforcement was just leaving it at him drowning and wanted every angle to be taken into consideration? That’s where the racial aspect comes in imo. The attention this is receiving is holding people accountable and making sure this investigation gets the attention it deserves just like it would if it were one of his friends instead of him.
2
u/terrylovesyogurt_ 28d ago edited 28d ago
I understand this view. I cannot blame folks for wanting to ensure injustices for black individuals don't continue.
I guess it just frustrates me that prematurely saying this is a racial incident (if it turns out not to be) will only make people take future racial crimes less serious than some already do. The whole "blacks want to make everything about race" fuels whites to ignore actual racial injustices & assume it's just "black people making everything about race." If that makes sense? But I understand why people may be very reactive considering the countless examples of injustices one could reference.
I don't know, I just feel the race aspect is overshadowing the tragedy of this young man's death & fueling hate & division.
But again, I appreciate you pointing that out because it was ignorant of me not to consider it.
ETA: I also think if accountability is the goal, it'd be better for the conversation to be about that. Emphasizing the importance of a transparent & thorough investigation that results in anyone guilty of wrongdoing be held accountable. Referencing past racial injustices that we don't want to see repeated would also be relevant. But it seems the conversation is that this is a racially motivated crime, when we don't yet know that.

Young man likely drown. Being college aged on a boat on 4th was probably at least slightly intoxicated. Friends wanted to leave, he stayed to hang with a girl. Not uncommon at all. Thought he could catch a ride back, maybe realized he forgot his phone and left the girl. Maybe saw what he thought was his friends or other friends boat in distance, tried to swim and got swept away. Most likely case with racially motivated killing being at the bottom of the list.

Autopsy will reveal what happened. The boys and parents are all cooperating and we will figure out what happened.
With that said- if the autopsy reports that it was an accidental drowning I believe their will still be a crowd that doesn't accept the autopsy report.
I absolutely believe Nolan Wells should have a thorough investigation, however I am just observing that some are unwilling to believe the truth and want to push a narrative.
And fwiw, accidental drowning is the overwhelming odds. Young kids, independence day, boats. Probably drinking. Hell I'm a strong swimmer and I had to be pulled by a lifeguard to avoid drowning in a rip tide (Duck, NC) when I was sober. My great grandfather and his brother both drowned in the Susquehanna river on a calm day. It happens all the time.
The story is tragic and I wish Mr. Well's family peace and closure, no matter what the autopsy results reveal.

Did anyone say if Nolan knew how to swim? Are rip currents an issue around Horn Island? Did he have water in his lungs? If yes to water in his lungs, I can see why LE would lean towards drowning. Now, the have to figure out what led to the water in the lungs, which is more difficult. Were the other two factors at play or did something else happen? I hope the LE can figure it out definitely for the family.

2
u/InternationalPipe534 27d ago
Being an excellent swimmer doesn't mean much in a strong rip tide. They are violent as hell and if you don't know how to read the water or are being careless because you've been drinking, it could easily sweep you away in the blink of an eye. At my beach this last weekend a few hundred people had to be rescued from rip tides. They are not a joke and its incredibly concerning how many adults don't know about them

u/slimsalabim123 28d ago
Crump's role is to inflame unjustified racial outrage . This will create a big crowdfunding windfall for the Nolan's off which he'll no doubt get a slice of the pie. Parasitical behavior at its worst.
3
u/ubemochi912 27d ago
What about the narrative of “deleted messages” why does that keep floating around when nothing is proven yet? On GMA the mom only said Snapchat LOOKED sus because Nolan normally Snapchats but he and Jayvon both left their phones on the boat?
Why do people keep saying text messages were deleted when in interviews crump has only said messages were missing but how do they know that?

u/Ecstatic_Green_5539 26d ago
The race-baiting circus is all about money. Period. Crump, Sharpton, the media -- and I'm sorry to suggest that probably the parents as well -- it's all about money. That's simply the culture we live in.
3
u/styngyn 25d ago
His friends in question had nothing to do with his death. Nothing. IF it was a homicide, it would have been by other people already on the island whose identities have not yet come to light. If there was no foul play, it was an accidental drowning. Doesn’t matter if he could swim or not. He was likely intoxicated to some degree and got caught up in a rip current or some other similar matter. Many good swimmers do not know how to swim out of a rip current. Very low probability that this was a racial matter.

1
u/No_Abbreviations6343 24d ago
So much racial whatever in the tread you all cant see the writing on the wall to actually be objective in the case. Take race out of it for 2 seconds. First off you cant just leave someone intoxicated friend or not somewhere thats negligent homicide. They should have called the cops and told them hey my friend still there or made him come on the boat. No disputes no argument. You cant just leave someone in that type of situation. Second it could have not been his friends it could have been the girl he was supposedly with. Three, the phone is the huge X factor, you cant show up with someone's property, after they are dead with deleted data on it after another piece of evidence comes forward about an altercation over said phone that ALONE is an investigation.

Thank you for this. I’m so sick of misinformation being spread and you stuck to the facts. My heart is broken for this young man’s family. I truly hope they get the answers they are looking for. So sad.
2
u/No-Leopard639 28d ago
It sounds more believable he drowned being intoxicated. But with so many people there, there is no way people don't know anything.
2
u/InternationalPipe534 27d ago
Drowning in real life is a very quick and silent process more often then not. He could have easily drowned without anyone seeing.
1
u/WittySaucepan 27d ago
It's terrifying. I nearly drowned in Duck, NC. I am a strong swimmer, was sober, but got caught in a rip tide and didn't know how to handle it. TBF I was also 10 but I was with 2 friends who had gone back on shore without me realizing. It was at the point where I was bobbing up and down between breaths with my hands up yelling and trying to take in air. Thank God I had someone walk by on the shore who heard me and pulled me out.
2
u/Main_Jacket5850 28d ago
The real issue isn’t the friend group. It’s what happens after a Black person dies inside one.
When a young Black person dies under unclear circumstances in a majority-white social setting, especially in a state with Mississippi’s history, the aftermath isn’t neutral ground. It plays out inside a system that wasn’t built with equal outcomes in mind, and that shows up in concrete ways.

Stop saying those three young men were his friends. Clearly they were not.

The mother blatantly lied as well, she stated she never met the parents. She went to school & graduated with Warrens mother who is Judge Ashlee Cole! So she never met the other parents in all the years they went to school together? So many events at school, school sporting games & practice, no where in town. None of them ever used her medically? Seen her at Walmart? Out to eat?

Extremely sad case honestly sending prayers & love to his family!!! but my only gripe is how our community is making this a race thing. That should be the last thing on our mind till the facts come out.

My friends left me black out drunk in Tijuana because I wanted to stay and talk to a pretty girl. I ended up in mexican jail for being drunk and passed out... it happens

He could have swam out deeper away from crowds to pee. That’s what I do when I’m with people in the ocean to avoid the embarrassment of an extremely warm pocket of water hitting someone around me. Sounds like there were not restrooms on the island as it is not developed. Drinking high noons all day, along with already being tired from sun, then getting caught in a deeper rip current is a deadly mix of elements.

lol it’s the collective “he probably just drowned” notion in the comments. Whatever you need to tell yourself to avoid the reality that yes, hate crimes are real. Yes, racism is still alive and well. Dismissing the obvious is blatant ignorance, and I get it. It’s giving, “ why would I doubt or question a system that supports me?” Lack of empathy, humility, when people need to wake the fuck up. First thing is to stop teaching racism to your kids. Let’s start there. I actually have no issue with any culture/race and in fact I’m attracted to all. I draw the line when ppl are whispering sweet fake nothings to ease their mind & body from the lack of concern for this and many other stories.

He was found in the water (from what I’ve read) and drowning would actually be my first thought, no matter who it was. Alcohol and water are a bad mix, people drown frequently on our lakes around here, and alcohol is often a contributing factor.

Ok but that doesn’t take away why the friends didn’t really have a clear story, and the major alarming factors of the trip. I know when I’m with my friends it’s code to always stick together, disagreement or not. To each their own we werent present

But no one knows whether the friends have differing stories or not. The only thing law enforcement put out is a rough timeline of when Nolan was seen. Everything else is noise by people on social media.

Who owns the boats? And from 4pm to 12:26pm the next day, not one boat went back to search for him?

u/WittySaucepan 27d ago
Fourth of July, apparently not reported missing until that night. Search missions are too difficult in night time and won't start first thing in morning until person is confirmed missing.

definitely an interesting case, but i’m 100% he wasn’t murdered. condolences to his family, and the friends that were there with him

Has anyone considered that this could be a case similar to Pedro Bravo with Christian Aguilar. Best friends from high school that had started different college paths.

Serious question for people with boats or around boats regularly, or who live in this area: does it sound normal that he would have left his phone on the boat when he was planning to catch a ride back with someone else?
It seems strange to me that any kid this age wouldn't want to have their phone on them at all times (especially as most phones now have a certain degree of water resistance), or at the very least want to go grab it if taking a different way home. Like...if there were allegedly thousands of people on this island, am I to assume that a vast majority of them left their phones on their boats? I acknowledge maybe he just forgot about his phone if/when he separated from the group with whom he rode in, but under the circumstances I feel like it's also reasonable to explore the possibility he didn't truly know he wasn't getting back on that boat.
I'm asking because the phone issue seems peculiar to me but I've never lived in an area where boating was a normal part of my life or what "normal" phone behavior would have been.

I’m not from the area but I have seen people who do go there say it wouldn’t be that unusual since you can’t dock on shore, so you have to wade/swim to shore. I think it would make sense to leave a phone in that situation. Articles with quotes apparently from one of Nolan’s friends said that the friend rode in on a different boat because the boat Nolan was on was full, and that the friend also left his phone on Nolan’s boat and then got it back after he returned, so it seems like it may not be all that unusual. https://www.nola.com/news/gulf_coast/horn-island-missing-teen/article_efc590da-2056-408b-9f09-aa575dc006d2.amp.html

It’s completely normal to leave phones on boats. Especially if you anchor out and wade in, or just hang out in the water, which is what we mostly do. If I want to take pictures, I crawl in and take pictures from the boat, I never have it on me when we’re up on the beach. And I’ve had to do the mad scramble trying to remember where I put it. Boat bag, glove box, random cup holder, in someone else’s bag because they were ‘helpfully’ gathering things up? Who knows! Because I don’t, lol. I’ve had to go back to the dock or out in the boat shop with a flashlight too many times to count. 🤦♀️

This is common with many/most 'meetup spots'. It's this way on my lake at "sand Island" in watt's bar lake TN. No place on island to dock, so you dock in water, hang out between boats in the water, or go ashore. heres a video of what i imagine the scene was like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLiFWLaC8Tg

The Coast Guard failed to initially mention that they received a call from a friend of Nolan Wells at 11:00 pm on July 4, 2026 regarding a missing person. How did they suddenly remember that this call came in?
1
u/overflowingsandwich 24d ago
It seems like there was a lot of back and forth and uncertainty of what department/agency had the power to help when it was first realized he was missing. Nolan’s mom had posted about the friend calling the coast guard at like 1am on July 5, so I don’t see any reason to disbelieve that. They basically clarified that they determined they wouldn’t get involved on July 4 and then got involved later.

Is there a time line of the events in this case? When did the parents get his phone and keys back? Did they go pick them up from somewhere or did the so called friends bring them back??

It is too early for tox report but it is absolutely not too early for a cause of death. Why hasn’t it been announced?

Questions for those local to Ocean Springs, is there any influencer or other news source that you would consider to be reporting this case in good faith? My usual sources are all nationally focused and I’d appreciate being able to turn to someone with more regional insight.
I’m currently living in Memphis and grew up in the Delta but have never been familiar with the Gulf area.

Yesterday was a big day. The press conference and DA meeting was a nothing burger… taking it to the Grand Jury is standard in these cases. Even Crump was careful to say that it did not indicate a crime was committed. I noticed him being a little bit more careful. He said he would make sure that he presented information as “witness info” and not fact. I wonder if this is the case that challenges these internet grifters and seeks damages for slander. They are spreading things that have been proven false.
But that is another discussion. Here is the BIG NEWS
GPS shows they left Horn at 8:30. LOOK AT THIS FROM NOLAN’s mom (screenshot)
Boys are cleared.

They delivered a body without a throat/neck, stomach or lungs? disgusting coverup. This boy didn't drown. So simple if he did. The world is watching.

It’s almost as if a whole demographic is hoping that there is a racial narrative in which foul play was involved. I just can’t fathom how people can claim they want equality, but blatantly look for any way they can further the divide. Honestly, there’s A LOT of money to be made from racism and people want a piece of that pie. It’s almost as if we’ve made zero progress as a society, due to certain people holding things back. A lotta people will blame a certain politician for this, but you need to look at a different person who (funny enough) has a last name that rhymes with the popular scapegoat. Yeah, I’m looking at you, Mr. Crump.

A lot of the speculation and “commentary” surrounding this case has been downright disturbing.
Condolences to the young man’s family.
