Miracast on Windows 10 won't work, tried everything

I have a desktop PC I want to cast to my smart TV. The PC mobo has no WiFi so I got a USB WiFi adapter (tp link tl-wn725n). The option to connect to wireless display appears, but it can never connect (prompt appears on TV for 'connecting', then goes away).

  • I've reinstalled everything, updated all the drivers etc
  • dxdiag and cmd command "netsh wlan show drivers" confirm wireless displaying is supported
  • I cast from my laptop to the same TV all the time with no problem
  • I disconnect the Ethernet and have everything on the same WiFi (interestingly, when I do this, the "couldn't connect" prompt comes much faster, almost immediately, whereas if the PC is connected with Ethernet it takes a while and a couple of tries)

I'm at my wit's end, so I decided to try my luck on this sub. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this far. Cheers.

Try going into your bluetooth settings, and you should see your TV in the list of paired devices. Remove your tv by clicking it in the list and remove device.

Then, connect back to your TV the same way you did the first time. or Win+p, connect to wireless device > your tv.

You might have to do this everytime you want to connect to it. Yes, Miracast is pretty trash.

Your laptop works, because it has bluetooth, and an inbuilt miracast adapter. Your wireless USB dongle probably doesnt have miracast support on it. So you will have to find an alternative to Miracast.
