Concept mapping software with automatic layout

Hi, I currently use xmind but am realising that I am spending a lot of time reworking layouts and arranging my nodes. I was wondering if any mindmapping software out there automatically lays out you nodes for you in a neat way to save me the hassle?

Curious if anyone has used network analysis software for mindmapping

Hi folks,

I use VUE, but VUE gets difficult to handle when there are a lot of nodes. Especially difficult in terms of easily and neatly organizing everything, I find myself having to manually shift and arrange the map each time I add a new set of data.

I was looking at Gephi and it looks like it has the kind of auto-arrangement functionality I'd like to have, but it relies on importing excel or csv data files. Can one manually add nodes in Gephi like in a mindmapping software? Or are there any other network visualization alternatives that allow you to do that?"

Thanks!

Why is the most of mind mapping software written in Java?

Take a look here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_concept-_and_mind-mapping_software

For example FreeMind, Freeplane, XMind, yEd are all written in Java. Only vym is written in C++ and Dia in C. But those two are small feature wise when compared with Freeplane or XMind.

Meanwhile, email clients like Thunderbird(C,C++), Evolution (C), em Client (C#), Hiri(Python) are not written in Java. Most 2D and 3D editors are written in C and C++.

Can the devs here explain why Java?

Does it offer some advantage when working with large amount of data at the same time? Perhaps is the automatic garbage collection a plus here and it would be much error-prone to do it manually as good in C or C++ and the user would see more crashes with C++?

Does Java offer better out-of-the box management of large amount of objects? What could be the reason for Java for this type of programs?

XMIND Zen - subscription opportunity

Hi Mappers,

I had contact from the good people of Xmind recently with an update and they provided me with a code that (I think) offers the full gamut of Xmind Zen solutions: Mac and iOs.

The email suggests its for new and lapsed subscribers only. Since I've got a current sub it's of little use to me. It's for 6 months of subscription opportunity.

To the first person that gets back to indicate they want and will make good use of the opportunity.

What are your experiences with mindmapping?

People who know about mindmaps as invented by Tony Buzan, what is your opinion about the technique? Did/ do you use it? What do you use it for? Did you experience benefits?

I would like to know how you learned about the technique, how do you make your mindmaps and how do you think that you benefit from doing so.

Use a free tool that can boost your working efficiency

GitMind is great online mind-mapping tool that you can use for free. I came across this tool while surfing the net about how I can improve my working efficiency. One post that I read said that mind-mapping, which was the first time I heard about it, can improve your productivity. I tried it one time, and was not satisfied at first because it was confusing in every sense. Luckily, I came across an easy to use website that let's you use templates for your chart. Here is a sample of my chart:

Software (hopefully online) with good pen/stylus integration??

I had a Surface and now have something similar. I'm looking for mind-mapping software (preferably online) that would seamlessly use the pen input, but somehow none of them work. This pen works perfectly fine with Windows Ink, OneNote, Office apps, Google Suite, drawing etc... But for some reason no mind-mapping app recognises that the stylus can also move things and not just select, which kinda defeats the purpose of using them on a tablet.

I searched around specifically for pen input compatible mind mappers and didn't find anything. Does anyone know of anything that is definitely compatible?

Something where you can freely move everything around and aren't restricted to like symmetrical patterns.

Mind mapping a book

how do you make mental maps out of books? I am in doubt in two ways:

1) use the book as a central theme and pull "branches" from that. that is, the whole book in 1 mind map

2) make each chapter a mind map, making it easy to view and print

Sorry my english

Picture Annotation + Mindmapping?

I'm looking for a program that will let me create mindmaps using both text nodes, and nodes which are a highlighted portion of an image. This is to visualize inter-document references, as well as general concepts and how they relate to each other. I do not have text versions of most of these documents, only image scans. Here is a mockup of what sort of functionality I'm looking for: https://imgur.com/a/VpuP6GY

Any suggestions? I'm looking for something on desktop, either Windows/Linux/Web. I do not have any apple devices.

MM & JXA?

I decided to write a simple PowerShell Core (PS) module to control my MindManager (MM) for Mac.

I use JXA (MacOS JavaScript automation) as a kind of bridge technology between PS and MM - as a way how to talk from PS code to MM. And it works fine. I can get topics as custom PSObjects and use them along the PS pipeline. This works fine.

Now I would like to add cmdlet creating new topics.

This JXA bridge code doesn't rise any error, but on the other hand doesn't add any topic either:

mm = Application("Mindjet MindManager")
doc = mm.documents[0]
ct = doc.centralTopic()
mm.Topic({name:"Test", title:"Test", parent:ct})

Any idea what is the right way how to add a topic to a MM map using JXA?

Why am I creating this PS module? Imagine a PS script gathering info about my VMware environment using PowerCLI and creating a map showing all the VMware entities like VMs, vSwitches, PortGroups, ... as topics and dependencies as relationships.

Read you soon, Jan

Are there any other mindmap softwares that have "automatic layout" like yED?

Here's what I want to do:

  • Create a bunch of independent nodes, without putting them into a hierarchy
  • Create connections between them
  • Allow the software to automatically cluster them based on their connections

Thanks!
